Conway High School students have worked hard and diligently in their classes and extra-curricular organizations in order to represent our schools well, and many more plans are being made now for future endeavors and accomplishments. Conway High School students are fortunate to have the many opportunities offered to them by our own schools, the city of Conway, and the fine colleges of higher learning located in Conway. Packard M,S,E, English II Peggy Stanfill uses hand motions to stress a point in her speech. Speech, an elective course, is offered for one year at C.H.S. Poise, expression, good grooming, and a true appreciation of drama are only the beginning of the goals for which speech students are Mrs. C. A. Hamilton B.S. E, English II Mrs. Warren Oliver B.A., Speech striving. Speech class deals mainly with public speaking and subjects relating to it. The techniques of being a successful speaker are studied, discussed, and practiced, Library and Study I-Iall Miss Freida Cummings M.A., Librarian The library is efficiently equipped to provide the student with the best resources for his studies. This year the study hall meets in the auditorium because of the crowded conditions in the library, Students make good use of their study hall period. 16 Miss Cummings helps Don Hendrickson select a library book. Johnny Cole and Linda Halbrook read the newspaper for current events. Physical Education Mrs. Jeff Farris, Jr. The Girls' P,E. classes play volleyball. M.A., P.E. P,E. boys practice leg wrestling. Lf .I I! 7 f The department of mathematics offers Algebra I and ll, Plane Geometry, Trigonome- try, and Senior Math. The importance of math is stressed and classes are always filled to capacity. E., Biology Psychology The science department provides the stu- dents with excellent labs for use in biology, chemistry, and physics. Biology teaches the life processes of plants, animals, and humans. Chemistry deals with the characteristics of the elements, and physics includes the study of mechanics, heat, light, sound, and electricity. Psychology, which is anew course added to our curriculum, helps the student to learn and understand the aspect of human nature more thoroughly. in ,qw 2 z.1 ii K, Mr, Jerry Bradford Mr. Anderson conducts an experiment for physics class. Anderson B.S., Chemistry, Physics Mr. Dixon shows the biology aquarium to his student teacher. 21 Foreign Languages Hic, haec, hoc The foreign language department offers two years of Latin and two years of Spanish. Latin I students mainly study grammar B.S.E.,Span1sh1andn and fundamentals while the second year stu- dents progress to reading the works of Julius Caesar and Virgil. Spanish gives a broader knowledge of Spanish ways and customs and teaches the students to speak, hear, and write the language fluently. Mrs. DEHIHS BI'2.Ilt Mrs. James Clayton M.S., Latin I and II Spanish students take a listening test from tapes. Q1 History and Economics Mrs. B. A. Lewis M.A., Social Studies During a study period, government students catch up on government in the making. Mrs. Gregory Selig B.S. E., Economics History has always been a popular course at C.H.S., and this year an economics class was added. World History, American History, and Government are the other courses available to students. These courses provide the student with a knowledge of the past, present, and future stories of mankind and also help to make better citizens of the students through comprehensive study of modern government. 23 Mr. Jerry Bradford B,S.E., World History Mr. Thomas Johnson B.S.E., American History Mrs. Gregory Selig B.S.E., American History ' A -K 'Jalal' Y ,Ek ' L L J wwf U LUT4' Mrs. Ben Vann M.S., Vocal Music MUSIC The C,H.S. band performs at ball games and pep assemblies. They also give concerts for the student body and the public. The Glee Club works to prepare assembly programs for our school, civic clubs in Conway, and other schools in Arkansas, They present a Christmas program and an Easter pageant annually. Members of the Glee Club practice a special-number. fm pl Mr, Russell Langston B.A., Band Director The band practices hard during their hour class period. 25 Journalism Mrs. E. W. Packard M,S, E., Journalism The Journalism class has the task of pubiishing the school paper, the Wampus Cat. Each month they present a paper of which we can be proud. Getting the paper to press involves much daily hard Work, and the students spend much time in meeting their deadlines. 26 ul: Martha Scott, editor, discusses layouts for the paper with Mary Ann Spencer and Cindy Willbanks. The Journalism class sorts papers for circulation. Typing and Shorthand Mrs. Milmo Black Mrs. Black looks on as students busily type. M.S.E., Business Education l Conway High School offers one year of typing and one year of shorthand. L i The first year of typing is plann- ed with the emphasis on the personal satisfaction of typing, and also develops typing into a Voc ational asset. One year of shorthand teaches l a skill which is valuable in almost any occupation. N. Selig, S. Holloway, and B. Brannon rest after taking a speed test. 27 Introduction to Business Driver Training and Distributive Education Introduction to business, which teaches the basic principles of selling, management, public relations, and efficiency, is designed especially for students who plan a career in the business world. Driver training, a one-semester course, is a highly successful part of our curriculum in that it teaches the young drivers automobile handling and safety. Distributive education, where students attend classes and work part time downtown, is on-the-j ob training. 28 Mr. Jim Hickman M. Buddy Traylor paints a grill, Assembling oxy-acetylene welding equipment 29 Mrs. Lerory Summers M.S., Home Economics 'Q Mrs. Summers explains techniques used in sewing. 3 Home Economics l x Home Ec. girls learn the fundamentals of cooking. C.H.S. offers three years of home economics. The Course in- cludes cooking, sewing, child care, houseplanning, decoration, marketing, and budgeting. H During the first year of Home EC., the girls learn the basic fundamentals of h o m e rn ak i n g. The second year stresses family relations and during the third year the girls develop their skills further in sewing and the other fundamentals. Guidance Counselor Mr. Otto Turner M.S., Diploma of Advanced Studies, Guidance ...fm Linda Ollger utilizes free time by filing for Mr. Turner. Mr. Turner types student information forms. Guidance counseling is an im- portant phase of the student's ac- tivities in Conway High School. Dianne is a representative of the Student Council this year and is also a captain ofthe Wampusettes in which she has been a member for three years. She was a Girls' State delegate in the eleventh grade and has been in the National Honor Society for the past two years. Guy Burke is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Burke. Guy was a member of the Latin Club in the tenth and eleventh grades and was also a member of the band these two years. He was a member of the Key Club in the eleventh grade. He has been member of the National Honor Society for the past two years. This year Guy was first runner-up in the Who's Who contest for the Most Courteous Boy and the Most Likely to Succeed Boy. He is presently serving as the President of the Student Council. Students Curtis Coleman is the son of Rev. and Mrs. Clyde Coleman. This year Curtis was elected Most Courteous Boy in the Who's Who contest. Carol Ann Conner is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Conner. In the tenth and eleventh grades Carol was a member of Future Teachers of America, Red Cross Council, and Spanish Club. As a Junior she was also an office worker. In the eleventh and twelfth grades she was a member of the Latin Club, Student Council, and National Honor Society. Carol has served as a cheerleader for three years and was Who's Who Class Favorite in her Sophomore and Junior years. Also in those years she was an entrant in the Beauty Revue. In the eleventh grade Carol was a delegate to Arkansas Girls' State. She was elected Homecoming maid as a Junior and was Maid of Honor this year. She has been a member of the Wampusettes and Spanish Club for the past three years and was Treasurer of the Spanish Club in the eleventh grade. Margo has served as cheerleader for the past three years and was elected head cheerleader in the twelfth grade. She was a member of Future Teachers of America and an office worker in the tenth and eleventh gradesg she has been in Spanish Club, Junior Red Cross, and an honorary member of Peppers Club for the past three years. It consists of four officers and thirty-seven members. The officers are elected in the spring for the following year. J The Wampusettes were able to attend all of our football games this year, and they did--rain or shine, During the basketball season the group attended all home games and somey of the tournaments. Meetings are held every three Weeks. Highlights of the year were the Christmas party, which was a dinner this year at El Taco Casa, and the annual spring trip to Mexico Chiquito. In spring the club celebrated Pan American Day by inviting the school to go . South of the Border fashion wise. They set many new records in both state and district meets.
