HAYS GIBSON Superintendent Administration Achieves Progress The 1959-60 school year, just as each recent preceding year, has broughtprogress towardhigher standards and quality education in the Conway Schools. The ability of our Superintendent and Board of Education is reflected in this continuous growth and improvement. This has been accomplished in spite of difficult problems which have been en- countered at times. Nevertheless their wise coun- sel, expert guidance, loyalty, and devotion have kept intact a fine relationship with our community as the Conway Public School system continues to grow. 6 a i MRS. He works with attendance records, is Athletic Director, and Head Basketball Coach. Mr. Clark received his B. A. and his Master's degrees from A. S. T. C. Parker, T. Faris, P. Doyle, B. Dunaway. CATS TOP SCORERS IN AA SCHOOLS The Conway Warnpus Cats entered the 1959 football season with 10 lettermen and the prospects of a fine season. The Cats, although rather weak on defense, exhibited the ability to score from anywhere on the field at any time and lead the AA schools in this department. Win or lose they were colorful to watch. Although small and often heavily out weighed the Cats were top competitors who earned the respect of all teams they played. The 7-3-2. record and the placing of 6 men on the 3AA all-districtteam and one man, Wilbur Owen, on the mythical AA all-state team is a tribute to head coach Kenneth Stephens and staff, coaches Rex Lovell and James Clark. Another good Conway football team seems to be in the making for next year when 13 lettermen, including one all-district performer, will return. The Cats slappedthe Jackson- ville Red Devils 40-6in a lopsided fight. Three plays after the kick off and it was all over for the De- vils. The Cats held a 34-O half time lead. From this point on the second and third units lead the Cats to their third win of the season. In doing so the Cats lost halfback Jim Sanders for the sea- son due to a broken arm suffered in the first period. HOODY YOUNG-Halfback 1 yr. letterman ROCKETS REPEL CATS 28-19 The Catholic High Rockets football machine proved too much as they fought to a grim 28-19 vic- tory over the stubborn Cats. It is one of the oldest and most active clubs in CHS. The members are selected by a three-way vote: Class, facul- ty, and club There are 35 members: 15 seniors, ll juniors, and 9 sophomores. Peppers Club's main responsibilities fall during the football season. They sponsorHi-day activities, the football banquet, and the selling of score- cards at all home games. The celebration started with a parade in downtown Conway. Everyone held his breath for fear of rain, but at the end of the parade everyone was still dry. If only the night could have been the same. The maids, Maid of Ho- nor, and Queen Norma walked across the field with raincoats and umbrellas while the rain poured down. ln the midst of it all Queen Norma was crowned by the Tri-Captains. Seated in the reviewing stand, the Royalty endured the downpour bravely, until they were forced to seek shelter for the remainder of the game. From this unglamorous position they watched the muddy game, which almost turned in- toa skating rink. The game endedin a 13-13 tie. After a dispiriting game in the rain every- One went to the gym for the dance, where his spirits were lifted by the warmth and beautiful decorations of the gym. This year's team is a tribute to the coaching of Coach Clark. After the bad start the Cats e back strong, justifying the faith the fans had in them and becoming a good ball club by the of the season. The Cats entered the state tournament witha 13-9 record, where they made a good showing. The Cats can look forward to next year since they will have several returning lettermen to t the team. To belong to this band, the players must be members of good standing in the Concert Band, which is made up ofa select group of band students. Every year three members from each P, E, class are elected to serve on the Council. The Council makes plans and sets up rules for all intramurals carried on in the P, E, clas- ses. It is one of the duties ofthe Council to keep score at all intramural events. The purpose of SPQR is to sponsor worthwhile pro jects which further the interest of Latin students in the art, culture, and times of the Roman civilization. The club, which also holds membership in the nation wide Junior Classical League, is dividedinto three parts like the population of Rome. The re are Senators, Knights and Citizens who were formerly slaves.
