This spirit has many faces. It may be recognized in the gym or at the stadium when it is the face of SPORTSMANSHIP and LOYALTY. It is easily seen where C H S students gather for fun and recreationg it is the laughing, happy face of FRIENDLINESS and GOOD- WILL. Its presence is strongly felt in the varied activities of our club programs and pro- jectsg there it wears the bright and eager countenance of RESPONSIBILITY and COOPERA- TION. It is most evident in our classrooms where we see it in the guise of HONESTY, INDUSTRY, and SCHOLARSHIP. Yet all these faces are one face--one image--one spiritg and we wish to pay homage to that spirit--THE IDEALS OF C H S We dedicate this 1957 Wampus Cat Yearbook to the continued strength and influence of THE IDEALS OF CONWAY HIGH SCHOOL. Hi-Day Homecoming Festivities Hi -Day preparations were accomplished under a dual handicap this year. Since it came on Wednesday, students hadonly three days to build and decorate floats and it rained on all three days . Despite these difficulties, CHS students were ready for the big day with 13 floats. The day was cold and windy but clear, andthe parade, featuring Queen Linda and her court was a beautiful success. The most important event of the day was the game with the Morrilton Devil Dogs pre- ceded by the coronation of Queen Linda. Co- Captain Joe Mizelle crowned the Queen and Co-Captain Jimmy Sellers, exchanged the football for a bouquet of flowers. The crowd gave l5 for Royalty as the court took their seats on the throne. The highlightofthe day was a dance which was heldin the gymnasium fol- lowing the game. Queen Linda led the grand march as spectators watched ad- rniringly. The first me- lody was, Linda . The dance ended with the stu- dents rushing madly to get souvenirs of blue and white crepe paper. Students agree it was the best yet. PAT was crowned by JANE SATTER- FIELD, the 1956 yearbook queen. Crown- bearer was DEBBIE JONES. Between rounds of the contest CHS stu- dents presented various talent numbers. Their eye was on the ASTC tournament at the pre- sent and on the district title in the future. Three very close games were Won to put the Cats in the finals but as the buzzer rang to end the game the Cats were on the low end of the score, Although in high spirits, a few points kept them from winning the A,S,T, C, title, a feat that no Conway team has done yet. The Wampus Cats hit a slump after the tournament, winning only the games they were supposed to and really getting a licking by the strong teams. Hopes were that they would pull out by district tournament time, the climax of the season. Before the district tournament the Cats won two games by decisive scores and it was thought they were ready for the dis- trict. Diasappointment hung over the Cats as they were defeatedin the first game of the district tourney, although they fought hard all the way. One thing can be said of the 13 wins and ll losses of the successful season, everyone had fun and enjoyed themselves. 78 .Qin Q39 'Q .ggwi 0 'X-s Z1 hz x.Z pc- ff 12 5 L., BACK ROW Coach Clark G Pr1ce R Dav1s L Hogan E Stevenson K Darw1n R Hazel P Farrar FRONT ROW L Muses J Sutterf1e1d B Roach P Helton L Stell C Wmter T Huss GARY HEGI Co Captam CLE ON SULLIVAN Co Capta1n 79 LYLE ADAMS TOMMY CHICK in D- ,f Q' .vm GAYLE FOWLKES Davis gets position for rebound. These served their masters until they were set free the night of the induction service. To celebrate the Saturnalia the mas - ters exchangedplaces and were sold to the slaves. The money from these sales was to be used for a Roman banquet or to send a delegate to the National Convention of the Junior Classical League. The Latin Club float maintained their reputation by tying for first place in theme and second place in originality and beauty in the Hi Day Parade. Latin Club Meetings are varied and interesting. At the Christmas meeting, they sang carols in Latin and a yearly event is a program given by Dr. H. W. Kamp, Professor of Greek and Latin at Hendrix. The members know what other clubs are doing by subscribing to the National Latin Paper, the Torch, and to the state paper, the Vox Civitatis. Mrs. James Clayton, sponsor of the club, helps the members learn through their projects about life of the Romans and how Latin lives today through the deriva- tions of words.
