He commanded RVAW 110 until assignment to CONSTELLATION in June, 1971. As administrator for five thousand men, Commander Overdorf was charged with such critical and all encompassing responslbilities as the training, advancement and morale of the crew. In carrying out these charges he became a famlllar sight in all parts of the ship, checking fittings inspecting spaces, or chatting with 1nd1v1dual crew members. Philippines, Bizarre and eautiful Subic Bay and Cubi Point, our Westpac homeport, provided the crew of CONSTELLATION with many new and varied experiences ranging from the crowded, night life filled streets of Clongapo City and Manila to the quiet tranquility of the countryside at Pagsanjan Falls. The people of the Philippines come from Wide and varied backgroundsg ranging from the Malay, the original Philippino, to the Chinese and Moslems of later years. As a whole, we found them all to be a very proud and generous people. Olongapo City, which is directly adjacent to Subic Naval Base, gave us our first glimpse of the Philippines. The restaurants, bars, and hostesses of Olongapo City as well as the ultra-modern, multi- million dollar extravaganza of Manila's hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs gave us a more educated insight of the Philippino life styles. I The city life has a flair for the unusual and the bizarre, as well as all the confusion that goes with any metropolis. The countryside offers almost any kind of recreational activity one could ask for. Snorkeling, 'scuba-diving, swimming and sailing near White Rock and Half Moon beaches were among the most popular. Tours to all the scenic areas of the Philippines were offered by Special Services. , There was Manila, the most modern city in Asia, and offering the scenic and historical sights of the Philippines were the Pagsanjan Falls and the fortress of Corregidor, .the island of World War II fame. A lot of hard work was done in Subic Bay. Repairs were completed that couldn't be done at sea, supplies were taken on, and the over-all readying of CONNIE for our next line period was completed. fcfflxabi, l . , 4-K
