A -up Captain H.E. Gerhard January 1971 to September 1971 ' Captain Harry E. Gerhard served as Commanding Officer of CON- STELLATION from January, 1971, until he became ill in September. Captain Gerhard was born August 7, 1925, in Philadelphia, received degrees from Muhlenberg College and Columbia University, and was commissioned in July, 1945. After tours on board the USS GOODRICH, on the staff of Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force, he entered Naval Flight training in February, 1948. He received his wings the following September. 7 Captain Gerhard took command of CONSTELLATION on January 9, 1971, in the yards at Bremerton, Washington. With theten-month overhaul completed, he undertook the considerable task of training a crew to sail, fight, and maintain the ship. His past experience and strong leadership throughout Refresher Training, Carrier Qualifications, and the visit of the Board of Inspection and Survey team were instru- mental in readying CONSTELLATION for a seventh cruise to the Western Pacific. like ...ak

In July, 1962, Captain Ward began a two-year tour on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Strategic Plans Division, before returning to the air as Executive Officer and later Commanding Officer of Fighter Squadron 151, deployed to Yankee Station on the CORAL SEA. Captain Ward subsequently returned to Yankee Station twice, as Commander Carrier Air Wing Fifteen aboard CONSTELLATION and as Executive Officer of the CORAL SEA. Captain Ward's squadron and carrier experience proved a valuable resource as he quickly took control of CONSTELLATION and placed his own stamp on the whole ship. Morale was high throughout deployment, largely due to the Captain's personal contact with the crew, by frequent talks on the announcing system and the visits to working spaces. Through such efforts, he gave each man a sense of his own value to the CONNIE-Air Wing Team-and a feeling of participation in the mission of the command. lax Y Ag . J ' 5112 xl : ,Q 'C
