CON NIE's Skipper Captain JD Ward was called upon to assume command of CONSTELLATION when Captain Gerhard became ill one week prior to the ship's departure. A native of Rison, Arkansas, Captain Ward was born May 26, 1926, and commissioned as a Naval Aviator in July of 1947, after three years of enlisted service. For two, years he was assigned to fighter squadrons based at various Naval Air Stations throughout the country including Jacksonville, Key West, Atlantic City, and North Island. From 1949 to 1952 Captain Ward was on inactive duty while earning his degree at Louisiana State University and flying, with Reserve Squadron 823, Naval Air Station New Orleans. Returning to active duty, he was assigned to Composite Squadron Three, Moffett Field, California. Having detached from Composite Squadron Three, he attended the Navy Test Pilot schooland served a tour as an Engineering Test Pilot at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Maryland. A three and a half year tour with Fighter Squadron 21 followed. During that time the squadron completed three deployments to the Western Pacific aboard the USS MIDWAY. '

In July, 1962, Captain Ward began a two-year tour on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Strategic Plans Division, before returning to the air as Executive Officer and later Commanding Officer of Fighter Squadron 151, deployed to Yankee Station on the CORAL SEA. Captain Ward subsequently returned to Yankee Station twice, as Commander Carrier Air Wing Fifteen aboard CONSTELLATION and as Executive Officer of the CORAL SEA. Captain Ward's squadron and carrier experience proved a valuable resource as he quickly took control of CONSTELLATION and placed his own stamp on the whole ship. Morale was high throughout deployment, largely due to the Captain's personal contact with the crew, by frequent talks on the announcing system and the visits to working spaces. Through such efforts, he gave each man a sense of his own value to the CONNIE-Air Wing Team-and a feeling of participation in the mission of the command. lax Y Ag . J ' 5112 xl : ,Q 'C
