From the peak of her skyscraping mainmast, filled with wind-blown canvas, to the solid construction of her wooden deck was a distance of 180 feet. Her length was five feet less. Her armament consisted of 38- guns: 24 eighteen-inches on the main deck, 14 twelve-inchers on her sec- ond deck. Her crew consisted of 309 adventurous men. Her reputation for speed, resulting from her clipper lines, earned her the nickname of The Baltimore Racehorsen Clater referred to by the French as the Yankee Racehorsel. On a day of open winds and calm seas she ran free at l2Vz knots. In addition to her sleekness and speed, she was also classified as an ex-I cellent sailer, particularly in heavy weather. ' In combat, Constellation was un- equaled in her time. The French Frig- ate Insurgente was first to feel her might. During a battle in the West Indies waters in 1799, Constellation defeated and captured the reputed fastest ship in the French Navy and the World. In February of the following year, the French Frigate Vengeance en- gaged in combat with Constellation. The Vengeance was wrecked be- yond repair: Constellation remained unscathed. During 1802, pirates operating in waters along the Barbary Coast were defeated on numerous occasions. Following these battles against pi- racy, Constellation was not called Mew! upon to act in her country's.bel:1G1f for nearly half a century. This time Constellation was dispatched to the Mediterranean Sea to protect our ships from attack by unfriendly vessels. , In 1865, Conste1lation's fighting days drew to a close, but her sails remained filled as she carried mid- shipmen learning the ways Of The sea. . At the end of World War II, C011- stellation retired from active service. A group of patriotic citizens have begun a project to bring the Ieilfedf but not forgotten, frigate bdek T0 the nations waterways as a reminder of our country's proud past. Her spirit was indomitable, and from this spirit the present Constel- lation draws her motto: Sp1r1t Of the old, Pride of the new. .1121 ffl g -'al L -4 F ,1 I I 4 . it , -. 3, ., V - .': HQ ,Q 'J 1 1
