We have lights, fresh water, cold water, steam, heat, air conditioning, people to repair damage or fight fires. We have these things thanks to Constellation's Engineering Department. The largest department aboard Constella- tion, Engineering has tive divisions-A, Auxiliariesp B, Boilers: E, Electrical: M, Main engines: and B, Repairs. Headed by the Chief Engineer, the depart- ment has responsibilities from stem to stern, from top to bottom. One of the newest innovations, which may be unique in the Navy, is the Flying Squad, composed of specialists of most of Engi- neering's divisions. BFS-before Flying Squad-when a fire was discovered aboard ship most of ship's company had to man their repair party stations even though they might be in the opposite end of the ship from the fire. Now only a dozen highly trained men respond to Fire Call, erupting from their bunks, chow tables, work spaces when the call Away the Flying Squad is heard. Now instead ot everyone moving in a semi- mass-confusion from everywhere to every- where, everyone moves aside and lets the experts handle the fire. 'Probably the best known telephone num- ber on the ship is 888 . . . Central Control. No matter what goes awry, the air condition- ing in the forward berthing compartment, the ice machine in the CPO Mess, the steam line in the laundry, you dial 888 and one of Engineering Department's specialists heads for the trouble spot to repair the damage or get the machine working properly again. LT W. V. HAFF, IR., Main Propulsion Assistant
