1 1 1 1 1 THE COKER I955 CONNELLSVILLE JOINT HIGH SCHUOL CONNELLSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA Education is a companion which no misfortune can decrease, no crime de- stroy, no enemy alienate, no despotism enslave, at home a friend, abroad an introduction, in solitude a solace, in society an ornament. lt chastens vice, guides virtue, and gives grace and government to genius. Education may cost financial sacrifice and mental pain, but in both money and life values it will repay every cost one hundredfold.-AUTHOR UNKNOWN STAFF Editor .......,...i. . . .i.,....,.. HARTMAN To a modest and devoted teacher, who gives of his time and patience freely, we wish to dedicate this 1955 edition of the annual Coker Yearbook. The many pictures taken every year of school activities, and random scenes are a token of the untiring efforts he puts forth to make every edition a better yearbook. Thus, we, the Yearbook staff, would like to pay tribute to Mr. Hartman to whom we are greatly indebted for the unlimited time and advice that he freely gives to us. 3 SCHOOL BOARD Jai Seated, Left to Right: Mr. W. This organization is composed of nineteen members, two elected from the eight senior homerooms plus the class ofticers, who preside over the meetings. At intervals during the year, the council convenes to decide upon important issues concerning the Class of 1955 and makes plans for such activities as Color Day, choosing student commencement speakers, and other important decisions necessary for the proper functioning of the class. Members of this group represent the entire Senior Class and their decisions are based on the ideas and opinions expressed by discussions held in homerooms concerning senior activities. Under the guidance of Miss Mildred A. Reiter, the success or failure of the class activities depends largely on this group. 12 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS PRESIDENT , . . This may mean good-bye, we have to part, But we'lI keep these memories within our hearts, To call upon when we are lonely. We'll think of all our classmates, teachers, sports, and homework too, But most of all we'll think of how we'll miss each one of you. Banning, Paula Matsko, Martha Ellis, Joy Ritenour, Diane Caliguire, Shirley Herbert, Jean Wolfe, Barbara Schomer, Janet Moon, Carolyn Hickson. 2nd Row: Tom Lunnen, Donald Murray, Nancy Jordan, Carole Green, Joyce Coffman, Barbara Bixler, Nancy Orndorft, Eleanor Trump, Janice Flockvick, Charles Rice, Angelo Robettucci, Alan Deetz. 3rd Row: Ray Hart, John Trimpey, Richard Brooks, Tom Oris, Richard Armen, Ed Kostelnik, Henry Opper- man, Howard Roberts, Wilbert Scott, Joe Opperman, Fred Bates, Dan Reclner, Ralph Lepre, Jerry Zavatsky, Anthony Merindino, Bob Work, Richard Feniello. Under the new oflficers, this year's Student Council is showing signs of being better than ever. The careful supervision of President Ray Hart is already having its mark on the whole student body and Vice President Jerry Zavatsky is always ready when needed. With the careful minutes and financial accounts kept by the Secretary-Treasurer, Paula Matsko, we are sure this year's Student Council will go on record. For years Student Council has been an outstanding organization in our school, and this year seems to be no exception. They are the representatives of our entire student body, and have an indirect voice in the government of our school. The whole school feels the same as the Yearbook staff and members when they say, Thanks for your co-operation in making this a better school year. The students and Student Council have certainly worked to make it one. 62 ,wwf Q? n I 1 'Nas XX iw Delfcu . , Miss Gibson Gamma Mrs. Rumbaugh Alpha ,. The emblem of the National Honor Society is the keystone and the flaming torch. Signifying its purpose is the light of guidance of the flaming torch, while the keystone symbolizes strength of character. ln the words character, scholar- ship, leadership, and service, listed in the order of their importance, are embodied the requisites for membership in the National Honor Society. Each year a number of Seniors and a few select Juniors are admitted. The colors are blue, signifying truth, wisdom, and loyalty and gold, repre- senting love and human understanding. This Society, a guiding light, is a goal that every high school student should work toward. lts principles give wisdom and understanding in helping one to solve his problems wisely. 77 MUSICAL COMEDY Speaking Cast, Seated left to Right: Leah Jaffee, Nancy Enos, Barbara Braemer. Standing: Robert Shearer, Paul Herwick, Richard Armen. Not Pictured: Evelyn Leeder, Alvin Burnworth. ANYTHING GOES The annual school operetta, in the form of a musical comedy, Anything Goes, was presented in the Connellsville Joint High School auditorium on Friday evening, February 18, 1955, under the direction of Mrs. Madeline L. Stein and Mr. Elsley Witt. The story centered around eight passengers on a boat trip to England. On board were Billy Crocker QRichard Armenj, a play boy business manager, who is hiding from his boss E. J. Whitney CPaul Herwickl, while pursuing a young debu- tante, Hope Harcourt CEvelyn Leederl, who is being accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Harcourt fBarloara Braemerl. Also on board was Reno Sweeney CNancy Enosl and her 17 angels who were going to England to perform. As the plot thickened, Hope's supposed fiance, Sir Evelyn Oakleigh CAlvin Burnworthj, fell in love with Reno, who had taken a liking to Billy. Meanwhile, Billy, who was room- ing with Public Enemy No. 13, Moonface Martin fRobert Shearerj and had assumed the role of Public Enemy No. 1 for a disguise, was being pushed onto Moonface's girl friend, Bonnie La Tour CLeah Jaiteeb. Eventually things straighten out and Hope and Billy were married. Sir Evelyn received his greatest desire, to be married to a night club singer, Reno. Everyone was happy, including Public Enemy No. 13, who learned that he no longer was a Public Enemy. 78 A y, .- ': .QE Q mw 11 x X .l......l SAE' :Al S -nfl! -I - nl ld 'I Doom 1' 5 W . 7 ,.:.
