In early history, the location was known as Stewart's Crossing. This crossing on the Yough- iogheny River was the head of the keel-boat navigation and was a stop-over for emigrants settling west of the Alleghenies, and messengers between Cumberland and Fort Pitt. Colonel William Crawford, who was a well known host at Stewartis Crossing fnow the West Sidej had much influence on the early history of Connellsville. I Zachariah Connell, a surveyor and pioneer of wide influence among the early settlers, founded Connellsville in 1806. The original charter for the town of Con- nellsville-the area had previously been known as Mud Island-was issued in 1793. It contained an area of 180 quarter acre lots within the boun- daries of Water Street, North Alley, East Alley, and South Alley. , ' With great vision Zachariah Connell, in 1806, obtained a new charter which incorporated the town of Connellsville as a borough. This charter extended the boundaries of the town north along Fayette Street to Crawford Avenue, east to the Breakneck Road, south to Connell Run following the Run through East Park to the Breakneck Road. In 1874, the section now known as the North End was added, and in 1905, the South Side. Stewartfs Crossing became known as the town of New Haven and was incorporated as the West Side in 1909. The town charter of 1798 had set aside two lots, to which in 1812 were added two more lots, at the junction of Church Street fPittsburgh Streetj and Crave Street CFairview Avenuej for schools or churches. This area, known as Mount Puff, was the site of the first school house, a log cabin. There is no record of when this first school was built but it is known to have been in exist- ence in 1804. It was destroyed by fire in 1829. Classes were held in rented rooms from that date until 1838 when three one-room brick buildings were erected. In 1869, the Union School house, a three-story brick building, was erected on Mount Puff. In 1882, a course of study for each class was adopted and the first class of six students was graduated. The High School was established in 1895 in the Cameron Building. The present High School was built in 1916. The first successful local newspaper-the Keystone Courier-was established in 1879. Later the word Keystone was dropped and the paper has continued as The Courier to the present day. Originally, a weekly paper, The Courier became a daily in 1902. Rich veins of coal were known in the pioneer days. The first successful coke oven in the area was of the bee-hive type and was built by Lester Norton in 1838 in East Park in a building which had been ercted for carding and spinning wool. So great was the demand for coke by the iron foundries which were springing up in Allegheny County that soon coke ovens were being built in many sections surrounding the town. The first coke was boated down the river., The uncertainty of navigation and the lack of storage facilities re- stricted the development of the coke industry. In 1857, the Connellsville and Pittsburgh railroad was built. This provided a more satisfac- tory method of transit and the local coke indust developed rapidly into the largest in the worlifi which reputation it enjoyed until about 1929. Because of its strategic position in the foot- hills of the Allegheny Mountains, and at the crossing of the river, Connellsville early enjoyed prosperity as a merchandising center in the Yough region. Local craftsmen prospered in the occupa- tions of shoe making, silver smithing, and cabinet making, until the factory goods from the eastern manufacturing cities forced their retirement. Though other congregations were present, Episcopalian, Methodist, and Presbyterian, the first congregation to organize was the Baptist Church in 1796. The earliest ministers were itinerant missionaries who sometimes served also as school masters. The religious congregations have increased steadily with the population of the town. Connellsville now has about 32 churches. The Carnegie Free Library was established in 1903. The Connellsville State Hospital was estab- lished in 1890. The State Armory came into being about 1907. The Teen-agers Youth Center was organ- ized in 1947 and found permanent quarters in an inactive school building on the West Side in 1950. .h ,, , .,wff ' , ' V' ' ' T'? a'q ? This is a right to an education in accordance with your ability and a right to pLu'sue that education as far as you can profit from it. It is part of the American belief that education should not end when full time attendance in school ends, but that formal schooling is merely the beginning. The informal schooling given by life itself, through your working with other people and with things, is the factor which will have the greatest bearing on your lives. Graduation from school is a good preparation for beginning that informal education. It must continue through life, for the boy or girl who graduates today and stops learning tomorrow is un- educated the day after. The right to learn, however, is matched by the obligation to learn. Failure to use the tools of knowledge to become informed on personal and social matters is a civic waste. You are obligated, therefore, to seek knowledge to the same degree that the state has been obligated to keep open the paths of knowledge for you. It is your fundamental duty to make the most of your faculties, to become as large and as helpful a part of the world as you can. Your own active effort is the important thing, and no school buildings, no books, no teachers, no lessons learned by heart will justify your failing with this self education. This school expects that you will live up to your highest standard and do your highest duty to yo1u'selves. Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler once stated that there were five tests of the evidence of education- Correctness and precision in the use of the mother tongue, refined and gentle manners, the result of fixed habits of thought and action, sound standards of appreciation of beauty and of worth, and a character based on those standards, power and habit of reflectiong and efficiency or the power to do. Many in the class of 1950 may now consider their education completed. This is far from true for education is a life time process, and mastering the five tests in a task worthy of continuous effort. Above all, resolve to continue your education. Finally, strive to be resourceful. The real art of life consists in finding out what is the question to be solved. The person who finds out what the problem to be solved is is the man who really makes the contributions to- life. There is only one thing which will train the human mind in resourceful- ness and that is the voluntary use of the mind by the man himself. The only thing that is worth having is that which one gets by his own exertion, and what one gets is proportionate to thc effort he puts into it. MISS MILDRED REITER The future depends on you, the youth of America. Man has delved into science and created a hydrogen bomb and other articles of pure science. Your work is to develop social science that people may learn how to use these discoveries for the improvement of mankind. Science has learned how to control many forms of matter but man has learned little how to control himself. Unless you learn how to control yourself and learn how to teach controls to the individual, society will destroy itself with the tools it has created. We know that where the state controls the individuals humanities are forgotten. It is only when the individual controls himself and the state that democratic ideals and the rule of love can exist. This is your work. No matter if you enter a profession, trade, or housework, you cannot escape this demand upon you. If you do not accept this responsibility, you will leave little in this world for the youth who follow you. 6 Mr. Harold Swank Miss Mildred Reiter jluz, 1, Kumi 'G NIIIIIIIIIIQ XII'. I,.lXIlI. XII. The cast of characters included: Bob Lauder, Mr. Ieffrey Hartman, Dave jones, Elliot Hartman, Jim Goddard, Buzz Lind- say, Bill Phillips, Keith Nolan, Maurice Oppen- heim, Mr. Fields: Chuck McLeod, Alan Fields, Tom Cadwallader, Clancy, the gardnerg Bob Pritts. a messenger boy, Ioan Caughey, Mrs. Louise Hartman, Loretta Orndorif, Midge Hart- mang Barbara Brady, Virginia Hartmang Patty Henry, Carollyn XVebsterg Florence Hood, Gabby Alleng Eleanor Denvir, Edna, the maid, Nancy FitzCerald. Mrs. Fieldsg Pauline Bryner. Christ- ine Myers, Ronnie XValker, Freddie North. The play centers around Midge. the youngest of the three Hartman children. She is very ener- getie and manages to make everyoneis business her own. She sends the Hartman family into chaos by causing her sister, Virginia, to be sus- pected as a thief. Midge drops a bombshell into her fathers business almost ruining Virginia's chance for a college education. Elliot's carefully planned life as a writer of tragic novels is prac- tically ruined and she plays braver with several other peoples hearts including a visiting New York glamor girl and a bashful boy. In the end, however, Midge manages to straighten things out much to the relief of everyone involved. Clancy and Edna provide a little spice on the side with their romance. The performance was enjoyed immensely by everyone who attended. GT FIRE FIGHTERS Mr. Kviglztlcy, Sponsor VV. VVisilosky, R. Blackstone, H. Miller, Bartholo- iuui, R. Pc-tronv, C. Dc-lligutti, A.
