Lewis, who, during his twenty-eight years of teaching, has continually expended time and energy for student betterment, far beyond that expected and required of him. Friend to all, he has not only taught material knowledge, but has molded character as well. We, the staft, therefore take great pride in dedicating this book to him. 3 'Z 4 ,illl J , -J ln 7 X t t ,ff 4 11, , L-L lea C 'Jflfl N91 I O l X i . 15? W. G. DAVIS MR. W. E. DOLDE Commencement activities are again making their rounds as you seniors approach the end of the school year. It would be a decided advantage if it were possible to realize the position each one of you will be filling within the next five years. What- ever that status may be, of one thing we can be certain-you will be alumni of the Connellsville High School, your Alma Mater. In addition to making a living, other obligations will devolve upon each one. Not only should you strive to be economically independent, but each and all of you should be most eager to make your contributions as a citizen to the community in which you live. This will call forth all of the abilities, attitudes, and appveciations which you have cultivated in your school career and which you should utilize to make your environment a better one because you have lived in it and labored to improve the gen- eral standard of living. The prestige of the Class of 1948 should inspire the remain- ing classmen to greater effort and achievement which are essen- tial for all success. We are pleased to extend to each member of 1948 our heartiest best wishes during the years which lie ahead. From your generation will come the citizens of tomorrow and upon you will be passed the responsibility of clear thinking and intelligent action. Therefore, you should have been striving for the maturity of mind which that responsibility requires. Your outlook should now be broadened to include a wider and wider circle of experience. You should find yourselves being concerned with something more than what affects you only. You should have developed a sense of responsibility that compels you to finish a iob. You should be able to cope with problems more sensibly, to reserve your judgment under emotional pressure, to reiect preiudice, to practice tolerance, to weigh values, to resist and analyze propaganda, and to make wise decisions. Your school experiences here have provided many indica- tions of your growth toward this maturity, conduct in assembly, acting with genuine courtesy, keeping your emotions under con- trol, exercising good taste in social situations expressing sym- pathy and understanding, accepting responsibility for your own learning, thinking in terms of newer and broader values. As you leave this high school, evaluate yourselves and con- tinue to strive for this maturity. 6 A history of this city states that Connellsville was developed by the coal and coke industry. This industry, no doubt, had a great part to do with its growth. The real development of Con- nellsville has been accomplished by constant labor and diligent service. All the worthwhile organizations: government, schools, churches, homes, and service organizations, have meant hard work and sacrifice on the part of someone to make this way of life possible for you. To you, the youth of Connellsville, goes a responsibility, not only to promote all these fine established organizations and insti- tutions in your city, but to develop to greater heights a demo- cratic way of life so that every boy and girl of any race, creed, or economic background, may have equal opportunities in choos- ing his way of life. As your forefathers developed an industry for the foundations of your community, may you develop in- dustries and institutions that may build a city free from influences that wreck lives of youth and create an atmosphere of goodwill and brotherhood among all citizens. We live at a time when ideals of service and international understanding are sorely needed. The opportunities for service by individuals in these troubled times are great. The prime object of the days you spent at high school was to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Your efforts, we sin- cerely hope, have been crowned with success. However, it must be remembered wisdom is quite useless if it is not accompanied by actions. Wisdom and action go together, one without the other is useless, but when both are applied, the result can only be successful, the degree of success depending entirely upon the extent of the knowledge and the wholeheartedness exhibited in the carrying out of the duty. It would be well to resolve to use your knowledge to ad- vance human welfare and to help make this world a better place in which to live. It should always be borne in mind that actions speak louder than words. 7 MISS MILDRED REITER MR. HAROLD A. SWANK THE SCHOOL BOARD Dr. H. H. Mclntire Mr. J. C. Munson, Jr. Mr. W. L. Zollars Mr. J. R. So it was with Jamisetta Jackson. A vibrant and energetic per- sonality has faded to fond memories which will be kept and cherished in the hearts of fellow classmates. Life in its never ceasing pattern passes onwardy but one friend is missing. She had movement, and heard musicg known slumber and wakingg gone proudly friendedn Rupert Brooke 38 SENIOR COUNCIL Here stand we of the Senior Council in a stiff and formal pose with the sun blinding us while Mr. Hartman squints through his lens. Row 'l-Joan Graziano, Nancy Anderegg, Josephine Feniello Row 2--Lorraine Wilde, Lois Peterson, Joan Ball, Ann Porter, June Leighty Row 3-Bruce Dull, Blaine Gutermuth, Sam Brooks, Kenneth Haas, Sam Colatch, Jim DeBolt Relaxed and unbent, we squat around a table in Room 34. That fleeting look on our faces might be classed as intelligence. What are we discussing? -possibly the coming election, maybe the senior photographer. The fellow at the extreme left is not yawning, he is speaking. Hurrah! The President's Ball. Who could forget the North Pole sprouting from the center of the gym floor, or the Night before Christmas ? Look closely at the picture and you can distinguish Pa Hetzel and Santa Sam Brooks. Orchids to the Senior Council for a well planned and well at- tended party. The slightly distressed girl under the kleig lights is Nesta Showman. The gentlemen facing the other direction is one of the senior photograph- ers. Lack of space prevents us from showing all senior council activities on this page, but the Prom, Color Day, Senior Day, and Graduation exercises will remain indelibly stamped in our memories. And certainly to the pupils planning a musical future, a stu- dent band offers ci very tine foundation. Connellsville High School has for many years presented a superior musical outfit, This year, under the new guidance of Mr. Harry Mitchell, our band continued to maintain its usual high standards. Making their seasonal debut at the East Pork Bandshell, September l, the band presented a varied program consisting of both rousing football tunes and pleas- ing musical comedy numbers. Carrying on their original brand of showmanship, the band was on hand at all the football games to lend a touch of gaiety. Because of Mr. Mitchell's military background, they were a well-drilled outfit and very impressive with their erect and orderly appearance on the field. No sooner did the grid season come to a close than did the band switch over to concert season. ln order to satisfy all musical tastes, Mr. Mitchell worked with the band on classical, semi-classical, and iive compositions. After ci few demonstra- tions in assembly, the long-awaited Spring Concert was pre- sented on April l. At this concert, which proved very success- ful, Mr. Hoover of Dunbar High and several senior members served as guest conductors. During the entire school year, Mr. Mitchell saw to it that all the bond members were given an equal chance for advance- ment in their particular sections. For this reason, Mr. Mitchell was very popular with his students. Other factors contributing to f'Mitch's success as instrumental director were that he took a close interest in all school activities and always main- tained o system of cooperation with the student body. Besides directing the senior band, Mr. Mitchell took charge of the iunior band and also established a dance band and a pit orchestra. The dance band played at several noon dances and the pit orchestra provided music at the class ploy and several senior exercises. We sincerely hope that Mr. Mitchell has many more profit- able years at Connellsville High and we are quite confident that his presence here will be beneficial to his many associates cmd students. , , . -,........Ww - S -s cw. rs Top Picture Student Council in session .. c......c, te ,si ' bz Bottom Picture- Top, left tc right'-fBishop, Walker, Jones, Wright, Mihaly, Freecl, Brooks, Guterinutli, Phillips, Dull, Haas, DeBolt, leichliter, Taylor Second Rovvff Nedrow, Kurlxa, Anibrisco, Nabors, Shields, Ball, Wilde, Caughey, Feniello, Stewart, Steven son, Graziano first Row Hann, Wensing, Roach, Bevan, Godfrey STUDENT Student Council is an organization whose motto has and will continue to be Student Par- ticipation in School Government. This very tor- mal sounding pledge to promote a school with student leadership has been upheld throughout nineteen years of growth. The council has gained the respect and re- cognition that it is due and has been supported by all students who are interested in their school life. In the past, this group of students represent- ing us, has sponsored movements for school bet- terment and has brought about a realization that this is+Our School. At times, as with any group, the council's efticiency has been questionedg but in each in- stance it has proved its worth to the highest pos- sible degree. COUNCH Student Council this year has printed a stu- dent handbook, arranged pep-meetings during football season, organized a cheering section, at- tended student government conventions, helped with school drives, purchased a portable ampli- fying system, and other things too numerous to mention which have helped both the council and the school. A new constitution has been drafted, and a system of homeroom elections has been compiled, thus again providing for advancement. Meeting only once a week, the council has produced remarkable results. Results which should stand among any achieved by student governing groups. This, however, does not in- clude all students, to whom credit should be given for achievement during their four years in high school. The National Honor Society, based on standards of Character, Scholarship, Leader- ship, and Service, consequently, is the organiza- tion which allots credit to those students who meet its requirements. Stringent qualifications limit its membership to a small assemblage, and it is composed, mainly, of Seniors, although a few Juniors are admitted once each year.
