We have endeav- orcd to summarize the outstanding events of this school year. This book is our means of immortalizing the hap- py hours we have passed in Connellsville High School. Sports was chosen as the theme of the book because sportsmanship implies all of the qualities necessary for our success in public and private life. NVQ: wish to express our thanks to Miss Mary Brick- lnan. who directed the art work, and to Mr. Marlin W. Hartman for many of the pictures. We Zecficafie 7fLM gawk The Senior Class of '38 dedicates this annual Coker to the Connellsville High School Athletic Coaches Dolde. Barr, Lerew, Hull. and Lasky. They have done more than their part in guiding us by teaching and exempli- fying fair play, perseverance, and good sportsmanship. From them we have learned that success doesnit mean primarily to win material victory with ostensible gain, but to put our best eiforts into the game, win or lose. 7a Um Gmohw Alfred R. It seems only yesterday that three hundred tottering Freshmen entered good old Connells- ville High School with the intent purpose of conquering everybody and everything. What a humiliation we must have experienced to find that we were no longer the '6tops as we had been in the grade schools, how inferior we must have felt to be caught by an alert teacher ascending the descending stairs, how puzzled we must have been trying to find our rooms, perhaps being laughed out of a senior room into which- we had accidently walked! And yet it was only a few weeks before our affairs began to function smoothly and we became a part of our classes, clubs, and other activities in the high school. Not content to remain in the background for long, we produced our Freshman class play, Dollars to Doughnuts, which drew applause even from the upperclassmen. As Sophomores, we demonstrated our superiority by turning out a championship Junior Varsity football team composed mostly of members of our own class. ln basketball, we went even farther by having several members of our class holding down positions on the var- sity. Comedy again prevailed in our class play, The Mummy and the Mumpsw, starring James McCuinness and bringing several other talented actors into the limelight. Several of the boys displayed their versatility in portraying femin- ine roles. Our newly-organized band was certainly no exception lo our record for school spirit, for more instruments than our share were assigned to Sophomores. Semen 61044 One year passed and we were Juniors. Each year, we had to add more and more to our responsibilities and academic achievements. Our class play was a romance, with Lycll Buttermorc playing the romantic lead. Many were the feminine hearts that fluttered that evening. Members of our class soon began to as- sume lhc leading positions that they would have the next year. Nine members, five girls and four boys, were admitted to the National Honor Society, while several others had already earned the right to debate with the regular var- sities of other schools. Thomas Floto won the extemporaneous speaking contest and several other members of our class placed second and third in the various forensic events. The coming of our Senior year reminded us that we had but one year to remain in Con- nellsville High School. Our debalers continued to uphold their splendid recordg our football team again displayed that fighting spirit and good sportsmanship so characteristic of Con- nellsville teams, and our basketball team again finished in the first division, establishing a record of having played a tie game with our deadly rivals, Scottdale. Seven more Seniors were welcomed into the National Honor Society. Election of class officers served notice on us that our days in Connellsville High School were indeed numbered. On February 18, our first Senior activity, Color Day, was observed. How handsome we must have looked and how proud we felt as we walked up to receive our coronation blue and silver colors and our class flower, the white rose! As this goes to press, we are looking for- ward to our last Senior days with regret, for joyful though they are, they mean that our school life has come to a close. Semtvfi glade! Each school day one half hour is set aside for participation in these activities and the results may be seen each year at Par- cnt-Teachers, Night exhibit, hobby displays, the art exhibit, and the style show. Photographs in the following pages reveal a variety of clubs, of which Bridge, Etiquette, Linoleum Block, March of Time, and Mythol- ogy have just been organized the past year. Other clubs are Automobile, Camera, Charm, Chemcraft, Chess, Clogging, Coker Staff, Col- lcctors', College, Commercial, Dramatic, Fish and Came, French, Girl Reserves, Glee, Hand- craft, Latin. Leaders', Life-Saving, Manual Arts, Nature Study, Notary, Scrapbook, Sports, JW swam - Stamp, Woodcarving, and Yarn. These c'ubs are sponsored by the teachers who offer their instruction and companionship in these extra- curricular activities. As in past years students have had their own Student Council, Band and Orchestra, a chapter of National Honor Society, and a school news- paper. The Cokers pried off the lid of their 1937 football schedule on September I1 at home and defeated a new rival. East Bethlehem. 19-0. A long forward pass and two off-tackle plays spell- ed defeat for East Bethlehem. On September 17, the Cokers played their first game under lights at Mount Pleasant and emerged with their second consecutive victory, 13-0, before 3,00 fans. Both of the Coker scores occurred in the second quarter. On September 25, the Cokers played host to German Township and the result was our only tie game, 12-12. Both of the Coker placements were blocked. The Cokers went down fighting to a well- balanced Latrobe team on October 2, 0-6. It was the first defeat. After a week's rest, the Cokers played their second game under the lights at Washington. Despite the fact that the Cokers scored twice in the first half, once on a march straight up the field and the other time by a long forward pass, they lost by a final score of 13-33. T he next week, the Cokers again took to the road and traveled to Scottdale. The field was literally a sea of mud and water, and although it hampered the fast-moving Coker offense, they managed to gain a pair of touchdowns, one being a 63 yard run by Hart. Score, 14-0. On October 30, the Cokers continued their road jaunt by taking on their most powerful opponents, McKeesport. The final score was 6-21 in favor of McKeesport. The rivalry between Connellsville and Un- iontown was renewed at the Coker field on November 6. The Cokers were handed their worst defeat of the year, 0-31. Lujack was in- jured and was unable to play any more games. On November 13, the Cokers played their last game away from home and were nosed out by Norwin, 0-6. The Cokers pulled down the curtain on the current football season by defeating their an- nual Thanksgiving Day rivals, Dunbar, 6-0. The only score of the game was a long run by Zail Hart. The Cokers finished the season with 4- wins, 1 tie, and 5 losses. This was a creditable rec- ord considering the calibre of their opponents this year. The team won't be remembered as a championship team, but we of the class of 1938 will always remember its fighting spirit and good sportsmanship. 8 V1. 'Pup Ruw---Mr. Duldc, Olszcwski, Lujsick. Once she had her man, her formerly sweet disposition changed to a sour one lNotice chem- istry students- -sour as in hydrochloric acidl. Her dear husband, having been married once before. had a beautiful young daughter, Cind- ermariella by name. Mrs. X would force our poor little heroine to open all the cans of food for dinner and turn on all the lights, even though she had two healthy daughters who could share the work. These young ladies l'Mary Louise Burkey and Martha Logan! would laugh at little Cind- ermariella because she couldn't go to parties and have the good times they had. Onc day in the spring the young prince, Bob Laughrey lwho skyrocketed to faine after a still Sharm in Lincly,, and The Unrequited Love --send 25C for autographed photographj decided to throw a swing-session for his father, the king, and he invited hundreds of people from all parts of the country. 'il wish you could go, Cindermariellaf' said Martha, curling the ends of her permanent a- round her finger, but you wouldnit have any- thing to wear so l guess itis no use wishing. Scene II lThe house is empty. save for Cind- ermariella who is weeping before the gas logs. And was she burninglj Through the silence of the night came a tink- ling little bell. Cindermariella picked up her ears and turned around just in time to behold her fairy godrnother, John Munson, standing be- fore her. Why are you weeping, my child, he ask- ed, in a quavering voice. s'Be-be-be-cause I canit go to the dance and everyone is going except me and I want to gof' You shall have your wish, my young one,', said he. LAnd as for clothesf-visualize in your mind the gown that you wish and you shall have itf' Thus saying he pulled from his pock- et a little tin, wand and held it over Cinder- mariellais head. ln an instant our cindermaid was transform- ed into a princess with a gown of silver cello- phane even more beautiful than the one she had wished for, upon each foot was a tiny silver sandal and jewels shone in her hair and eyes. tAnd in order that you may have this truly wonderful magic wand, just send two boxtops, or reasonable facsimiles thereof, from two box- es of Rex, spelled R-e-x, breakfast cereal, and 29c in cash and we will send you without de- lay a fairy wand.J Then John transformed twelve rats, one liz- ard and a pumpkin into a twelve-cylinder car, a chauffeur, and a doorman. One promise I must exact from you, my dear, he added in parting. Midnight is the witching hour whereupon you will receive your old clothes, and in order that you will not be seen, you must return home before thenf, Cindermariella kissed her fairy godmother twhy john!! and hurried away to the ball. 6-7w,Zme Needless to say what fun she had at the ball. for when she arrived, the cellophane got in the princels eyes and he would look at no one else the entire evening. Even her sisters did not recognize her, she was so transformed. Mid- night grew near. She dreaded leaving, so she stayed until the very last minute and had to leave the prince in the middle of the Big Ap- ple as she thearing the clock strikel ran to the door. The prince gathered up his parts and quickly followed. When he got to the street all he saw was a squashy pumpkin and several fran- tic mice dashing for cover. His princess had fied. As the prince went back into the castle, he stumbled over Cindermariella's little silver san- dal. The next day he went from house to house, all over the city, hunting for the foot that bo- longed to that bit of feminine frippery. His search seemed in vain. Finally he came to Cindermariella's home. Mary Louise and Martha tried on the slipper, hacked off their toes and sawed their hee's, but the shoe was still too small. Finally the prince saw little Cind- ermariella. who, upon meeting him. gladly oH- ered her foot. The fairy godmother appeared at that instant and little Cindermariella was ,transformed into the vision of the night before. Thc'prince and Cindermariella were united in the presence of godmother Munson, and lived happily ever after. tBecause they ate Rex breakfast cereal. For four boxtops and fifty cents you may have the picture of this happy couple and the signed story of their romance, with an affidavit proving that they did live happily ever after.l QW 'Wt' Cimlerrnrzriellrz Thinks it over edicm Mme S ' l-1 r I7 rg 21 Z6 27 lim I 11 .1 .1 6 T H El 10 ILT 1.1 1.1. 16 15 19. 20. nliny from lvlt to right: Looks like an argument.
