The challenges that the iungles of Africa, the wild West, and the South Pole once gave have been met and con- quered. But now there is one supreme challenge - the challenge of space! Man has come a long way in his conquest of space. That which was once absurd fantasy is now a reality, that which was considered impossible a hundred years ago has now been done. Yet, we have only scratched the surface of thisfrontier. We can only guess what tomorrow will bring. With a bright hope for the future we have pro- duced our yearbook around the theme of space. Although only a few can explore the recesses of space, all of us can be the pioneers of our own lives. We will not be launched by a rocket but by the experience and knowledge we have received in school. ll, ,IX , X1 ALMA MATER Oh, Conemough with spacious halls ond campus bright ond green, Our fondest memories will remain with eoch endearing scene. We'll ever pledge our loyalties, devoted hearts to you, To Thee, our Alma Mater, we'll ever more be true. T Hoil, hoil to the Red ond Block, Hoil to our school with 0 cheer, We give our best to Conemough, Whose fellowship we hold so dear. D O TABLE OF CONTENTS PERSONNEL CLASSES DEPARTMENTS ACTIVITIES I SPORTS X T SUPPLEMENT DEDICATION Without the teachers that have worked with us daily, very few of us could even begin to occupy a worthwhile place in the world that we enter on graduation day. Their instructions, encouragements, and suggestions have played an important part in our mental, social, spiritual and physical develop- ment and have helped us to make many of the decisions that determine our futures. Although most people would like to limit a teacher's influence to a particular classroom subiect, this is only one of its many phases. lt is also strongly felt in extra-curricular activities where teachers serve as advisors and in informal between-class or after-school talks. Even though many of these sessions are very short, they often lead us to the solution of our current problem. Remembering all of these things, we would like to think of Mr. Robert Dyer, who passed away during this school year, as an example of one of these outstanding people. His influence affected all of us even though many never had him as an instructor for a particular class. His smiling face, his words of encouragement and praise, and his trust in the students will long be remembered. ln addi- tion to his regular duties, he served as an advisor to our yearbook for several years. ln an effort to express our appreciation to these people with whom we spend many years of our life, we would dedicate our yearbook to them and to the teaching profession which they represent. Class of I966: For you the depression and World War ll are something you read about. Or maybe your parents or other adults reminisce or you see a TV feature or documentary on the l93O to l946 period. lt was through these difficult days that Conemaugh Township High School was conceived and finally became one of the good schools of our area. To the people that made this venture of faith a reality, you and future generations of students owe a great debt. Gratitude is a virtue. You can best show your gratitude by using youreducation to build for yourself a good life and to serve your fellowmen and your country with sincere devotion. Significantly your high school education is ter- minated with Commencement. Truly it is only a beginning of the years that are to be. Use your diploma as a key to open doors ofgreater oppor- tunity. We have gone through six years of English and still cannot find words to describe our Alma Mater. What can we now say about that first day in September of l96O, when we stepped off the buses into the whole new world that would prepare us for launching. The now familiar classrooms and corridors held hidden mysteries that fall. Lasting friendships began when the students from area elementary schools merged to form the seventh grade class. We really felt proud when we wrote l966 under our names in the CONNUMACH that spring. ln the fall of l96l we were no longer the little seventh graders but were now old hands at high school. With a bit of pride we showed the seventh graders the ropes. Not realizing it then, we were being prepared for our future launch. We really began to feel like a class in l962. At a meeting in the cafeteria, the deans which we had chosen - Mrs. Margaret Statler and Mr. Joseph Badaczewski - helped us conduct a meeting to choose class officers. We elected Terry Stevens, president, Jim Sleek, vice-president, Barbara Woy, secretary, and Carol Weaver, treasurer, as our first class leaders. The annual magazine campaign became our first class proiect. Our sophomore year seemed to roll around faster than the speed of sound. We decided a change of officers was in order, so we elected Jim Sleek, president, John Smaila, vice-president, and Joyce Mishler, treasurer. Barb had neat handwriting, so we kept her as our class secretary. This year we had our first real taste of what it would be like to be astronauts. ln December, every study period was spent among the stars, over 500 were made with the help of every available sophomore. They, of course, were used to decorate for our first dance, Christmas Magic. ln our iunior year, always adventurous, we decided to switch class officers again. John Smaila gained the presidency, Jim Sleek, the vice-presidency, Stephanie Huber became our secretary, and Babe Marcinko, our treasurer. Forthe first time in Conemaugh Township High School history, a prom was to be held outside the school. Since our class sponsored the prom, this became the high spot of the year. After careful deliberation, we chose Green Gables as our prom site and The Enchanted Forest as our theme. Needless to say, it was a great success and was considered both unique and beautiful. Our class also presented Just Ducky, one of the two annual school plays. Everyone con- nected with the play added more memories to the vast amount already collected. With somewhat of a shock, we realized it was i965 and time to begin the final countdown. We found the magic that awaits every senior class and welcomed it with open arms. No longer did we wonder why previous seniors were proud of the senior-section in the auditorium - it was now ours. No more did we wonder at previous seniors who cried during the Alma Mater at the last foot- ball game - ours were now the eyes with tears. ln keeping with previous elections, we changed a class officer, Bill King became the new vice-president. The remaining officers kept their positions. Our football season was not the best, but we loyalty supported the boys, and Betsy Kelly, our Home- coming Queen, made the season seem brighter. January Thaw, the second play presented by our class, was a commendable production. Like the little seventh graders of long ago l96O, we, the seniors, are unaware of what terrors and ioys the future will hold. But whatever the events, we will face them with the determination and spirit of adventure that have become the trademarks of the class of l966.
