Mr. Baroni represents the first graduate of the Class of 1939. Doris represents the first graduate to receive a diploma in the Class of 1958. Twenty years have gone by! May the future be as kind to us as was the past. 2 The Making and Beginning of Our School The making and success- ful beginning of our school is contributed to many fac- tors. The first Board of Di- rectors, the first adminis- trators, and of course, the students did much to de- velop the school's sports, activities, and curriculum. Here are a few pictures of the early progressors of Conemaugh Township High School. 1939 One thing that hasn't changed. The first organized Board of Directors. G, VV. Hail, hail to the Red and Black, Hail to our school with a cheer, We give our best to Conemaugh, Whose fellowship we hold so dear. W Administration Our memories of Conemaugh Township High School will be sure to include Dr. Blough, Dr. Etsweiler, and the rest of the faculty, who have expertly guided us to the end of one road and the beginning of another. We will always remember their kind attention and helpful supervision. Although many rebuked the offered guid- ance, there will be many who will think back with respect to the advice given them. The faculty was only trying to do the best for our welfare, and the wise student realized this. As no bird can fly out into the world without his Mother's teaching, likewise no student will be fully prepared to join world society without some guid- ance from one of his childhood's earliest contacts-the teacher. 6 and Faculfy or this one ? Do you recognize this gentleman? Supervising Principal Dr. Telford B. Blough June 26, 1939, Conemaugh Township High School graduated its first class of 70 members. Since that time over 2,000 CTI-IS students have joined the growing alumni group. The Class of 1958 is the twentieth class to receive diplomas, a distinction worthy of special commemoration. Those of us who were a part of that first year at Cone- maugh Township recall the beginnings with pride as well as nostalgia. Mud, crowded rooms, and a general lack of funds and instructional and extra-curricular materials sometimes handicapped our efforts. But high purpose and a sense of mission for the young folks of this community marked the dedicated eforts of citizens board members, faculty and students. In 1938-39 CTI-IS was the largest rural consolidated high school in Penn- sylvania, and our building was one of the most beautiful. Out of the debris of the depression good educational foundations were built. In this twentieth year we glance back to honor those who helped us on our way, but we hasten to join the Board of Directors in planning better things for the future-new buildings for the elementary children, ad- ditions to the high school, and a better educational pro- gram for all. In these efforts we ask you to join us even as we wish you Godspeed when you bravely step into the future. D Telford B. Blough Board of School Directors BOARD OF SCHOOL DIRECTORS-Front: Mrs. Janet Riley, Charles E. Younkin QVice Presidentj, William Pugh CPA-esidentj, Mrs. Martha Jones, George Tempest CSecretaryj. NEWLY ELECTED SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS-Mr. John Yoder began his term ofofiice January 1, 1958. Mr. Freeman Brougher, who also began his term of office on January 1, 1958, was unavailable for a photograph. 8 Principal You, the Seniors of Conemaugh Township High School, Class of 1958, will find immeasurable opportu- nities and challenging responsibilities awaiting you upon graduation. For the past twelve years your efforts have been di- rected toward this high school event. Your school pro- gram has been changing continually from one year to the next. New experiences and increasing responsibili- ties have been offered in your curricula in an effort to make you more competent. As young citizens, you should seek to understand our modern civilization with intelligent reasoning. Your ideas must be flexible so that you may keep pace with a changing world. Concurrent with flexible ideas are sound ideals by which you must pattern your daily living. To each of you, I extend my heartiest congratula- tions upon your graduation from Conemaugh Township High School. The extent of your success and purpose in life depends upon your willingness to face opportu- nity and accept responsibility. William H. Etsweiler, Jr. T Secretaries Fay Ann May and Lois Williamson. These two efiicient secretaries were always there to help the students. DR. WILLIAM H. ETSWEILER, JR. Home Vi siror Mr. Charles Forney, our home visitor, kept a faithful watch on the attendance of each pupil. George Tempest, School Secretary The daily routine of these eflicient people has helped to create the well-adjusted program which the students of Conemaugh Township High School know so well. Without them our school would be missing some of its greatest assets. Their advice, willingness to help, Lucy Cortese, Secretary to Dr. Blough and sincerity will be remem- bered by all who have prof- ited from it. After a confer- ence with these enthusiastic advisors, students view the problems of life with a hap- pier and better balanced outlook. We, the Class of '58, wish to thank them for their able assistance. Katherine Foster, School Nurse James Spory, Elementary Supervisor MR. LANDIS P. Schools are established to educate young people and to prepare them to take their places in the world. Conemaugh Township High School is no exception to this rule and offers a varied curricula in each ofthe six courses. The following pages give you a peek into some of the classrooms that are part of the various departments. One of the main courses of study offered by Conemaugh Township High School is the Commercial Course which trains interested students in all phases of the business world. Would-be typists, stenographers, or private secretaries- yes, you will find all of these and many more studying hard to educate them- selves for future work. Eleven classes are offered, ranging from the study of busi- ness law, to filing and typing, to the practical use of the dictaphone. Commercial students will, no doubt, look back on their high school careers and remember some of the rough days they spentg but they will also look back, in appreciation, at the teachers who pre- pared them so excellently for their futures. Commercial Sally Horner asks for help in solving a difficult law CHSC. Be courteous, answer phone promptly, identify yourself immediatelyiall 'these things enable Lucille Donitzen to operate the switchboard ef- Hciently. Mr. Golden's guidance leads these students to the path of proper typing techniques. English English, the one subject that followed us every year of our scholastic careers, opened to us unknown hori- zons in both grammar and literature. Spelling, dia- gramming, parts of speech and the writing of themes were made familiar to all of us. So were the classics, poetry, short stories, and novels that we sampled on our way through American and English Literature. Another important part of the English department was the indispensable library, where many pages were turned through the years to find information on vary- ing subjects. The library, however, was not used only for reference work. Many enjoyable hours were spent reading the novels and short stories and scanning the newspapers and magazines that were made available to all. Library Want to read the daily newspaper, an interesting book, or the latest issue of Look? Then stop in Room 115-the twip's Library. RE Learning the fundamentals will prepare the seventh grade students for senior high English. In this twelfth grade English class, Macbeth, one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies, is studied and enjoyed by all. 3n + 4 : IO Systematic thinking is one of the goals of Esther Walker, as she solves this equation. Mathematics Mathematics has become one of the most important fields in this atomic age. Without math, many of today's inven- tions and discoveries would have been delayed or remain unknown. Most of the important scientific calculations known to mankind were brought about mainly through the study of math. Future mathematicians and engineers were cultivated in this held as they ad- vanced through the various phases of math, algebra, plane geometry, and trig- onometry under the guidance of the ex- perts of Conemaugh Township High School. Although Junior High math is not as complicated as advanced math, these students still put in many hours of concentrated studying. 62 Languages ,.,,g5, ii B1 Que' serape! Que' muchacho! Listening to the students in Room IOI arouses this question in the minds of many- Can this be Spain? Did the Romans have it like this? Xt t Academic students will always remember their strug- gles with either of the two foreign languages, namely Latin and Spanish. Those who studied Latin may remember Houndering through declensions, conjugations and genders, but fond memories of the Roman Banquet and the field trips to the Buhl Planaterium for the Latin Festival will always remain. Students who chose Spanish will look back on a class that made known to them the wonders and beauties of Latin America and her customs. Although the verbs were something that the students would have rather done without, the classes were very enjoyable and often unusual. 63 Man! Dig this crazy festival. W -M-L..,, IWC' N Science Pat Shubic seems to understand what he is doing. Do you? Biology, the science oflife, fascinates all. All seniors who took the Academic course will remem- ber their struggles with the sciences. It all started with general science in ninth grade. General science gave us an over-all look at the science world and prepared us for the specializations to come later. The first of these came in the tenth grade when We studied biology, examining the plants and animals. This was followed by chemistry in our junior year. Chemistry taught us the composition of matter and how and why chemical reactions take place. Some of the seniors went on to physics, studying the principles and laws involved in dealing with the physical changes in matter and energy. The sciences required a lot of hard work and study, but all of us will agree that it was well Worth the ex- perience. What is matter? Mr. Kaufman best explains this by experiments, assisted by Donna Baroni. Social Studies itil 353 if In this room, are the future citizens of our democracy. In order to be better citizens in this vast and ever- changing world, it is necessary for us to become ac- quainted not only with the history of the United States, but also with the development of civilization down through the ages. This knowledge becomes accessible to us through the social studies department. The prob- lems that we must face in life are also introduced to us and We, as future citizens, in order to be ready for them, must make ready for the solving of them now. Life and its problems are always changing, and we must keep up with these changes, because we will be the leaders of tomorrow. Pauline Shustrick points out locations to the other students. Studying the map is also a part of the course in geography. I 'III B Busy students preparing for a busy world. These boys help to keep our campus one of the most beautiful in this Vocational Agriculture and , Wooclshop Z1l'C3.. The shops here at Conemaugh Township High School serve a dual purpose in giving all the boys an opportunity to learn how to Work with metal and teaching others a vocation which they can pursue after graduation. Most predominent of these is the agriculture shop which teaches future farmers such things as animal husbandry, truck farming, dairy farming, genetics, conservation, and farm mechanics. The ag boys take care of the trees and shrubbery on campus, and raise and sell various types of plants. They are organized into a club called the Future Farmers of America. Useful articles, such as book ends and shelves, are created in this department. Mr. lift demonstrates a tool to the boys. iee '1 Homemaking Umm-smell that delicious aroma! The goal of the home economics department is to teach future wives and mothers economic means of cooking well-balanced meals, sewing, child care and the many other duties necessary for the providing of a healthy and cheerful home for husband and children. In the junior high years each girl is required to take nine weeks of cooking and sewing, respectively. Begin- ning in the freshman year of high school, the courses become electives. The home economics course may also be pursued at this time. The girls participate in many activities such as the Apple Dessert Contest and the State Farm Show. They are organized into a club known as the Future Homemakers of America. Sewing class helps these girls to be well dressed, poised, and neat. The Future Homemakers of Tomorrow-a worthy organization. A Art Our art department took on a new look this year. The art elective students ex- perimented and explored many new ideas with the old mediums. Creative experiment, in every phase of art, was the aim of the classes. Evidence of this was seen in the many exhibits throughout the year. Outstanding pieces of art work were done in mosaic, sculp- ture, mobile, and graphic arts. The student's art was exhibited in the County Traveling Art Mobile and the Annual Spring Show. Mr. Beckley solves many a studcnt's problem. Art is a culture worth cultivating. Guidance One of the most important departments in the school is the guidance department. We all will remember it with great appreciation for the way Miss Lohr and Mr. Beckley helped us realize our interests, aptitudes, and capacities and then suggested courses of study for us to follow to prepare ourselves for the future. Through guidance classes, group meetings, special films, career conferences, the counsellors endeavored to help us understand ourselves and directed us in the right way. This class looks interesting. Special Education In the special classes at Conemaugh Township, the academic work isl divided into three main categories: language arts, mathematics, and social studies. Much stress is put on the ability to read better. Magazines, teen-age stories, and news- papers are used most frequently to pre- pare the students for this type of reading in later life. Stories are often read aloud in class. Math is taught by corrective measures in the regular class, supplemented by practical use, such as grocery orders, figuring the cost of clothing and furniture, telling time, and learning of wages. Each fall this class takes care of the popcorn stands at the football games. This gives the pupil an opportunity to have actual experience. VVowl You mean there are that many muscles in our body? Gym fill! Today with the ever-increasing number of automo- biles on the American roads goes an increasing need for more effective safety rules and more experienced driv- ers. The best Way to acquire the correct attitudes and skills is to take the driver education course offered by the high school. The course, which includes classroom instruction and behind-the-Wheel training, covers all phases of driving. The reward for taking the course is not only in the receiving of your license, but in acquiring practical and useful knowledge for now, and future Vears. 69 Health Gym and health classes also are a valuable part of the curriculum at our high school. Supervised recreation not only adds variety to the school day, but also gives the body its needed exercise. The classes serve a four- fold purpose in that they provide the student with the physical, mental, social, and emotional aspects of life. Another important phase of health is actual classroom Work, Where the pupils learn about family living and the general rules of physical and mental hygiene. By discussing such common problems as dating, going steady, and the social graces, the students often find solutions to their problems. First aid is also taught in co-ordinance with the health program. Your physical fitness depends a lot on proper exercise. 0 Q Driver Education Driving a car safely can be fun. Just ask Bobbie Helsel. Mr. Kautz seems to be explaining the responsibility that goes along with driving. 1939-The first orchestra. Acfivifies 1939-One of the first vocal groups. 70 ,a 1939 The hrst organized Student Council. An integral part of every student's life at Conemaugh Township High School is the extra-curricular activities in which he or she par- ticipates. The student who is interested in dramatics, journalism, or music, can find outlets for his talent in the various activities under these departments. There are also clubs. Some are organized with a purpose behind them, while others are organized purely for social reasons. The main social events each year are the dances. The Christmas Dance, getting us into the right spirit for a festive season, is followed by the Valentine Dance, over which the Valentine Queen and her court reigns. Then comes the dreamy Junior-Senior Prom, long awaited and long remembered by all. Yes, Conemaugh Township's aim is to graduate Well-rounded indi- viduals today who will make better citizens tomorrow. 71 it ? Just name an unusual situation-think of any piece of bad luck-that's right-it happened to us. We won, and of course we lost, but all in all it was a good year. Every game was fought for until the final whistle-every play, every minute of competition was like an experience never to be captured again. There's something about an athlete that commands respect. Maybe it's poise, maybe it's egoism, and perhaps it'sjust plain heart-whatever it is, our foot- ball team had it. Good luck, fellows!!
