,f as 'ff' Dr. Telford B. Blough SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE According to the thinking of many seniors, Cone- maugh Township High School has always existed. It is difficult to believe that nineteen years ago less than half of our community young people entered high school, and only a small percentage graduated. We had no secondary school of our own. These teenagers were tuition pupils at one of nine area schools. They often felt that they didn't belong, they were outsiders. You are fortunate. As you join our growing CTHS alumni group, numbering nearly 2,000, you are blessed with a tradition and a heritage. We challenge you, therefore, to make a genuine contribution to your own future well-being, and add to the luster of Conemaugh Township by walking upright and looking the world squarely in the face. As you go your way, we pray that you will find your- self well equipped for the task you accept. We hope, too, that our community school has helped you find security of mind and peace of soul. Now, in turn, it is your responsibility to join us in building better schools for a better America. We will need your help. Please remember: Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. God bless you every one. Telford B. Blough A PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Innumerable things happen from the time one humbly enters public school life until the climax of school citizenship that is reached when caps and gowns are worn as symbols of a type of achievement. Youngsters entering high school and adolescence may be regarded as uncut diamonds. Their beauty, bril- liance, fire and potential usefulness exist but are more or less hidden. These greatly varying personalities are going through religious, social, physical and mental experiences which, collectively, are known as education. Diamonds in their rough natural form are valuable- but possess much greater potential worth. A finished product can be produced only by careful cleaving, tedious sawing, judicious cutting and monotonous pol- ishing. Since diamonds are inanimate, a slip in cleaving or other damage is irreparable and reduces their value. In human gems growth toward perfection comes not on the surface but from within. Teachers, parents, priests, ministers, and friends provide environmental factors that may be used in the fashioning process. Since only that which is studied, absorbed and practiced shapes adolescents, each individual determines his own pattern that finally crystallizes into some kind of a jewel. Mistakes do not bring ruin-they can be utilized, fortunately, for improvement. Heeding the admonitions and teachings of those who have preceded you, who have gone through the polishing process, should bring out in each gem its best qualities. How well the facets of each personality flash and reveal beauty from within will indicate how each individual has reacted with the environment. Paul C. Berkebile Paul C. Berkebile
