Don't be late for t class. CLASS Before we Senior Cadets start our travel into the future, let us reminisce to see what impression we have made in the history of Conemaugh Township High School. In September, 1948, a group of eager cadets entered C. T. H. S., in search of knowl- edge which would help them to enjoy life more fully. Although most of the cadets stuck with the ship, the roster shows that each year some of them failed to realize the great need for education, and dropped out. When we became Freshman we were beginning to be recognized by others. At this time we also felt a need for an organized unit rather than our small social orbits. The offi- cers chosen to lead us were Sallie Mishler, Commander, Ronald Harmon, Subcommander, Iohn Younkin, Lieutenant Secretary, Linda Haas, Lieutenant Treasurer. Walter Shank and Miss Katherine Mellinger were chosen as our-deans for the next four years. Cadets Ianice Miller and Richard Horner received American Legion awards for outstanding scholastic achievement as Freshmen. We also began early to make our mark in the interscholastic sports world, by Cadet Robert Iones's winning the District V Wrestling championship. As Sophomores we became more accustomed to combating difficulties and realizing the true meaning of our search for knowledge. We chose new officers: Commander, Ianice Millerp Subcommander, Ronald Harmony Lieutenant Secretary, Linda Haasp Lieutenant Treasurer, Richard Horner. Mrs. Emma lean Barron was elected as dean to replace Miss Mellinger who resigned. Our biggest project as Sophies was the Christmas Dance with Snowflake Swirl as the theme. Helen Dill was selected Sophomore Queen for the Valentine Dance. We spon- sored a skating party at Westmont Grove, in order to improve our financial status. Again we made our mark in sports with two Cadets winning Wrestling honors. Tom Coachman won the District V championship and Iames Devine won the District V and regional championships. When we became Iuniors we had made our mark in many activities-sports, music, drama, art, and journalism. This year gave us our big chance at dramatics with the class play, The Whole Town's Talking. Catherine Garlesky represented the class as Iunior Queen for the Valentine Dance. STR HISTUHY All through the year we had anticipated with pleasure our role as host for our big event-the Prom. We had sold football and basket- ball pins to assure us sufficient funds to accomplish our plans. We worked hard at this project and were well rewarded with a successful spring prom, the theme of which was My Blue Heaven. Guiding us through this year were: Commander, Ronald Harmony Subcommander, Richard Horner, Lieutenant Secretary, Linda Haasg Lieutenant Treasurer, Ioan Kelly. At last in l953, the goal for which we had striven so long and so hard, Was now achieved. We were dignified Senior Cadets! Our first accomplishment was the Senior play, Ienny Kissed Me, with Iohn Younkin and Sallie Mishler in leading roles. During this year three of our girls won distinction for their pulchritude-Donna Kaltenbaugh, as Senior Queen at the Valentine dance, Eleanor Govaker at the World's Baton Championship in Iohnstowng and Iane Thomas at the Maple Festival Queen Contest. Our officers for the Senior year were: Corn- mander, Richard Horner, Subcommander, Wayne Holsoppleg Lieuten- ant Secretary, Linda Haasg Lieutenant Treasurer, Ioan Kelly. The prom, class day, baccalaureate, and commencement ended the activities of these fine Cadets. In this short history we have touched only a few highlights of our school career. As We leave these halls, filled with pleasant memories, to take our places among the C. T. H. S. gradu- ates, We hope We have made our imprint upon the history of the school. We want to express our thanks to the teachers and advisors who have so ably guided us through the years. X Q I 2 I X 7 Q' W 0000000003 7? Some seniors think that a high school diploma is a magic carpet. They will ride through the clouds to the pot of gold. Experience of our former graduates proves this dream immature and inaccurate. Rather, a diploma is a key which opens doors. When you enter you prove your worth. Whether a job or college, military service or keeping house, the World may not be as friendly as Conemaugh Township High School. Sometimes your best will not be good enough. You may not be offered a second chance. We hope your school in co-operation with your home, church, and community has given you that strength of char- acter which will help you rise after defeat and accept suc- cess With humility and appreciation. Remember, too, that our best Wishes go with you all the way. TELFORD B. This course in- cludes a study of Pennsylvania, its history, and its government. , 2 tl 5 W .sim E BLISH Besides studying the correct usage of the English language. these s e n io r cadets read Beowulf, the Canterbury Tales, and Shakespeare's MacBe!h. Mrs. Kring's eleventh grade English class went into the study ot folklore this year, and through the efforts of the stu- dents, the play, Iohnny Ap- pleseed, was written, and presented at several grade schools. Even though We've con- quered space, we still have to study English. I wonder-do the men from Mars really un- derstand us? I-KN UI-USES Se habla Espanol aqui! Maybe so, but it is a tough struggle learning the correct pronunciation, numerous tenses and diiiicult pronouns. But this Spanish will come in handy in the future because the ad- vance of science has drawn the world closer together. Therefore the Spanish speak- ing people of the world are now our close neighbors. Everyone fasten your satety belt! We're ready to take oft to 500 B. C. Destination-Rome, Italy! Well, We may not go that tar, but We're certain to learn about the Romans, under the expert guidance of Mrs. Won- der. Amo-amas-amat . . . Familiar sounds to these be- ginning Latin students! Conju- gations and declensions con- trive to make life unhappy for these people but at the end of the year when they can quote Caesar like one of his lieuten- ants . . . it was Worth it, athematilzs Now Space Cadets, this is the formula for the new gaso- line used in our rocket ships -or is it? No, it's just one of the many formulas used in Mr. Greninger's trigonometry class. Facts and figures! They seem to know what they're doing. These students have to learn the basic principles of math before they are capable of do- ing any form of advanced study on the Rocket or auto- mobile. What's that? You're loooking for the u n k n o W n quantity? Well-keep trying! It's bound to be around somewhere. May- be Mr. Boucher has the solu- tion. CUM EHIII L Now watch closely, girls. You will soon be using this machine to mimeograph many important papers for the Space Academy. Yours is a veryfimportant job, for in order tor our Space Academy to function properly you must be experts in book- keeping. These jet-propelled students are learning their A B C's of typing under the expert super- vision of Miss Zabo. HU E EIIUNUMIII5 ,aiW'W n Good food and its preparation is very essential tor us Space Cadets. Under the supervision of Miss Luther, our new cooking teacher, We get first hand information. These girls were up to the minute in style in 1954, but this year the space suit with special antennas for interplanetary conversation is the thing. it J 'Fw What's this? Is it a picture of Planet X or one of the military secrets of Space Patrol? It may seem so to us, but of this you can be certain: Whatever Mrs. Marshall and her art students do, it will be ot the best quality. This year. several paintings of art students have been exhibited in the trophy show case. Each year samples of these students' work are sent to Pittsburgh and entered in an art exhibit. Many ot our students have won awards for their artistic skill. VUE TIU L AGRICULTURE These are the boys Who study the soil ot the different planets and deter- mine which crops would be most suitable. They also exhibit their best plants and animals each year at the Farm Show, which Was held in Harrisburg this year. SHUPS These boys learn how to cut, mold and shape metal into useful and decorative articles which go into the making of our super jet cars. The sound of saws and ham- mers Was heard in the shop al- most any period of each day. These boys Worked hard to create useful articles which they could use at home or sometimes even here at our Space Cadet School, It doesn't look as it these boys are studying blueprints, but they should be since they will soon be attempting to build an Atomic Hydrogen Space Ship. .,'I,1-i 'ali ff- .-' I 41 . , . . Springer FUUTBALL The C. T. H. S. Indians staged a highly successful football season during 1953. The charges of Coach Terebus, who served his fifth term as mentor of the Tribe, posted an eight win, two loss record. Windber and Adams Township were the two obstacles that kept the Redmen from going undefeated. The gridiron charges racked up 278 points for the season against 140 for the opposition. The Tribe's average per game was 27.8 tallies. In the first game of the season the Tribe downed Lewistown on their own field, thereby avenging a stinging defeat received the year before on our reservation. Ron Telenko highlighted the game with two touchdowns. The Tribe whitewashed the Boswell Bears 42-U in the initial home contest. Park Baker, play- ing his second full varsity game, rolled over four touchdowns. When he continued his scoring performance by tallying all the touchdowns in the following game with Ebensburg, it made Baker the man to Watch. The Redmen had quite a scare in the Westmont contest. Trailing by two touchdowns, 19-7 towards the end of the second quarter, the Tribe played smartly in the second half and slipped by the Hilltoppers. C. T. H. S. met disaster in their fray with Windber, the game being a shutout for the Indians. This was an unusual experience for the Tribe as it was the first shutout in five years. However. Coach Terebus's charges downed Bedford 46-6 the next week making up for the Windber loss. Another first for the team was the defeat suffered in the game with Adams Township's super team. The final home game with Shade Township was a fitting climax to a successful sea- son. This was played in such a snowstorm that by the time the final whistle had blown only a mere handful of spectators were left to witness a slashing victory. The Indians placed second in the Mountain Conference. The Tribe will be missing the services of ten Braves. They include Ronald Telenko, Wayne Holsopple, Ronald Golembeski, Ronald Harmon, Iames Devine, Ronald McClemens, Edwin Kozie- lec, Michael Koss, Ronald Meyers, and Ronald Gindlesperger. Ronald Telenko was honored by being placed on the Tribune All-Star Scholastic Squad. An athletic banquet, honoring the football players, band and cheerleaders, given on November 17, finished the season. TRAINERS MANAGERS I. Spory, R. Harmon, R. McClemens, S. Terebus, P. Butchko, I. Although the cagers were not so successful in pil- ing up victories, they actually had a stronger team than their record indicated. In sixteen of their games they scored sixty points or over and dropped eight contests by ten points or less. The Tribe had a good offensive record netting 1333 points with an average ot 63.5 per game. Many of the games provided the tans with plenty of thrills and excitement. The game with Richland Township which the Tribe won 54-52 in an exciting seesaw battle was one of the thrill- ers. The afternoon contest with the Alumni, won by the Tribe 78-63, was another. The close contests with Westmont and Windber in which the Redmen lost 73-70 and 65-60 in the last tew moments ot the game had the crowds shouting. An extra period was necessary to win the victory over Somerset in a close 72-70 score. The games with Ferndale and Ebensburg in which the Tribe pulled through 74-71 and 68-74 respectively had the fans on the edges of their seats. The season had many highlights, one ot which was Dalton Cable's phenomenal scoring. Dal who last year broke the schoo1's scoring record with 34 points broke his own by tallying 40 points this year in the Westmont game.
