These people are known to us as the Pennsylvania Dutch. Their customs, traditions, and quaint expressions have woven a back- ground pattern into the lite ot the community. It is because ot this heritage that the statt ot the 1952 Connumach wished to pay tribute to this group ot people. We, the stalt, have strived to blend their unique sayings and typical art work with many lond memories from the halls of Conemaugh Township High School. He used it to describe men always hopping from one thing to another, such as the salesman who could never find a right line which he could sellp the office worker who couldn't concentrate on what he was doing, but allowed his mind to flit from one idle thought to the next, the student who couldn't settle down to getting passing grades on his examinations, even, perhaps, the housewife who never seemed to find enough time to do all her work. These are people who somehow never seem to get in the groove that leads to success and happi- ness. Instead, they go nervously from one thing to the next, always expecting by some magic to find an elusive success that never comes. Many of the best things in life are free, even the freedom of making a choice, and it is surprising how much can be done with how little if we make wise choices. Learning how to make a living is not a burden to be feared, but rather an adventure of life. This is one great objective of our elementary and high school education today. We still teach the three R's, quite contrary to what one reads sometimes, but this does not constitute an education. A successful school program must not only comprehend the aca- demic, but the moral and the social phases of living. G. W. STEPHENS Supervising Principal CLASS OF' 1952: In l952 the Communist World still counts on America and Americans going soft-and rotten. Some of our own thoughtless critics contend that high school graduates are nice young things who have learned how not to work or to be dope addicts. Since high school is our business, we can't ac- cept either view. We know that our graduates are making good in war and peace. They are succeed- ing in farming, teaching, law, business, industry, athletics, medicine, science, engineering - hard work. CTHS Alumni are taking their places in the com- munity. They have fine families. They are good Americans. We believe in them. As you join more than l4UU CTHS graduates, we suggest that you too find some niche where you can experience inner peace, a sense of citizenship in a great country, and faith in each day's dawn. Don't let youthful drive be bartered for rainbows of complete security. Rather step boldly into today's world-strong and confident. You have our best wishes always. TELFORD B. BLOUGH High School Principal ST HE T EUUNIIIL The Student Council functions as a miniature government acting as a mediator between the administration and student body. The leaders of the group are Robert Pipta, president, Iack Bollington, vice-president, Wilma Yanus, secretary, and Marilyn Yoder, treasurer. Advisors are Mrs. May and Mr. Greninger. One of the innovations in Student Council activities this year was a day set aside in May known as Career Day. Numerous movies explaining careers and choice of occupation were shown. On that day the students attended various meetings Where they derived helpful inform- ation concerning their future occupations. Among other functions were selling school supplies, sponsoring the opening day assembly, decorating for Christmas, and holding a skating party. Also they edited and published a student directory, the Scout, which helps the new students get acquainted with C. T. H. S. We are proud of the work this organization has done to bridge the gap between the faculty and student body. wsfms2sxmvff asssswsrsHsszssmxxwewssawsxswwfsruwsverwmxtulsrawwwwwfummwmmxsVgsw-maavsmxwwrswwmarrawvwwmvseawvwArxemwffwwx- U - . rf 1 wf, ,- I A- 4, . , M ff. :sf . . 1 is ,f ALDSTADT, HELEN BoY'rs- California State Teach- ers College. It gifs such goot mem- ories. Let's turn the pages back of a make up diary and try to recapture them some. September, 1947 Today we entered that huge institution of learning called C. T. H. S. Will we ever learn our way around and memorize our schedules? How small can we possibly feel! Oh, how won- derful those Seniors seem! We'll be Seniors some day we suppose, but that's such a long time away. October, 1948 Well, we've been in high school a year now. We've finally become used to high school life and have started to enter into activities with a real will. Iust think next year We'll be an honest-to-goodness class. March, 1949 Now we are really a class. We have our own officers and advisors and we can start planning for different activities. We have chosen Bob Verna as our presi- dent, Ioan Knapp. vice-president: Sally Mc- Garvey, secretary: and Bob Pipta, treasurer. To counsel and guide us we have selected Miss Blanche Shaffer and Mr. Robert Fuller. Our first project has been to sell tickets for a community-sponsored minstrel show. We soon followed that with our first skating party at Westmont Grove. In athletics, music, art, dramatics and jour- nalism we are beginning to take our places along with the upper classmen. Bob Baker and Ioe Badaczweski are the only ones from our class who have placed on the varsity football team this season. As a fitting climax to this year Genevieve Thomas and Bob Verna received awards for citizenship. April, 1950 As Sophies we are really entering the so- cial whirl. The biggest event of our year has been our April Showers Dance when We transformed the gym into a myriad of rainbows and glistening raindrops. We also planned another skating party. By this time we are all pretty well settled in our classes and extracurricular activities, although we complain long and loud about homework, teachers, etc., we are having the time of our lives. We have decided to retain our same deans and also to re-elect Bob Verna as our presi- dentg Iohn Kosco became our vice-president: Bob Pipta, our secretary: Nancy Robertson, our treasurer. Io Ann Gimroth was our queen and repre- sented us at the Valentine Dance Court. May, 1951 This llth year of our school career has been by far the busiest and happiest of any yet. To help finance our big event of the year- the prom-we sold little red hats called Gob- bies and presented the 3-act comedy What a Life starring Bob Pipta as Henry Aldrich. At last it has come-the night of our first formal dance, the Iunior-Senior Prom. We de- cided on the theme A Spanish Patio and gaily bedecked the gym in such a gay and col- orful wav as to put a real patio to shame. But our hard work was well rewarded as the dance turned out to be a huge success. To direct us through this active year we re- tained Bob Vema as president, Iohn Kosco as vice-president, and Nancy Robertson as treas- urer. We chose a new secretary, Delores Cugini. May, 1952 At last we have reached the height of our school careers-we are now distinguished and dignified Seniors. The first part of the year we busied ourselves selling football schedule pen- cils, presenting our senior play Cheaper By the Dozen, starring Dave Yoder, and prepar- ing for the annual Valentine Dance. Our officers for this monumental year were Bob Verna, president: Iohn Kosco, vice-presi- dentg Io Ann Gimroth, secretary, Nancy Rob- ertson, treasurer. We elected Ioan Knapp, our twirling cham- pion, to preside at the dance and also to repre- sent us at the Maple Festival. Our class, with the first undefeated cham- pionship football team in the school's history, placed four men on the Tribune All-Scholastic Team. Milt Green was on the first squad and Bill Riley, Ioe Badaczewski and Steve Wishin- sky made the second team. The second half of the year was centered around and aimed toward our graduation. After the prom the year rapidly came to a close with a flurry of excitement. Class Day, Baccalaureate and finally Commencement has ended the year for us. As we separate and go our various ways to try to find our places in the sun, we shall have one tie to hold us together-our mem- ories of our six happy years at C. T. H. S. Yah, it was goot! They presented a very successful play and held a skating party to help finance their activities. Socially they sponsored the Iunior-Senior Prom. What fun they had decorating the gym for the prom, and how they surprised the seniors With the transformation of the gym into the dreamy theme Moonlight and Roses. At Christ- mas time the Choir presented the cantata, The Child Iesusf' to the student body and the public, after which they sang carols throughout the township. During the spring of this year they again received high Commendation for their concerts of sacred music presented in the churches of our own and neighboring communities. Through the recommenda- tion of M. Claude Rosenberry, head of Music Education, Department of Public Instruction, members of the Choir will' receive academic credit for their work in the future. This is the first music group to have this honor. Choir members will long remember the fun as well as the hard work which has made this organization a success. 9? Q 9 Qt e . T. H. S. fighting Indians completed their 1951 season with success. For the first time in the history of the school the football team was undefeated. During the past two seasons perfect records were missed by only one defeat each season, those being at the hands of Windber. This year they were not to be denied as ten teams fell by the wayside after being scalped by the Indians. In so doing a total of 320 points were registered against opponents while they could produce only 81. Four games especially high-lighted the play and team work of the squad during the season. Connellsville was the first team to be scalped by the Indians. An AA school, appear- ing on the schedule for the first time, was downed 19 to 0 after giving stiff resistance the first half. In the succeeding weeks two more teams went home the losers after being defeated by the Indians. Boswell lost by a score of 42 to 18 with Ferndale being defeated the following week 34 to 12. Ebensburg proved to be a tough opponent, as was expected, but not for long. After a scoreless first period, in which the Indians were a little tense from the pressure of the game. the score turned in our favor with two quick touchdowns and an extra point. That ended the scoring for the game. With four teams already defeated the Tribe entertained Westmont 40 to 0 while pre- paring for the next week's battle. After waiting three years for a victory over Windber, that at times was so close, the moon was finally smiling on our side as the fighting braves ran off with Windber's scalp 39 to U. More satisfaction comes from the fact that the Indians played their best game of the season under this moon. As forty happy braves rode home from their great conquest they were re- minded by Big Chief Terebus that next week we would again meet a tough opponent. Bedford's invasion of our home grounds was little cause for worry as they were de- feated 47 to 13. The entering of our camp by Adams Town- ship was reason enough for excitement. Throughout the entire game more faithful brave followers were brought to their feet over the quick and exciting events that followed. The passing game of Adams Township was of concern for they came the closest to overturn- ing our tepee. After a great struggle they were finally tamed 34 to 32. 7 With high spirits Shade Township engaged the Indians but it was not long before the Indians took the upper hand 25 to 7. The last game found the team making the journey to Somerset where they hung up scalp number 10 with a 27 to 0 victory. Thus ended the first perfect season in this reservation of fighting Indians at Conemaugh Township High School. Fifteen braves are leaving this squad never to return to former fields of battle for their Alma Mater. Decamping are Bill Riley, Bob Verna, Russel Yoder, Steve Wishinsky, Rudy Meyers, Richard Vinosky, Iohn Kosco, Lynn Fyock, Frank Negast, Robert Baker, Leon Carrico, Milt Green, Ioe Badaczewski, Iohn Brenchak, and Boyd Custer. Among the honors harvested during the past Indian Summer was a trophy representing first place in the Western Conference. This is the first time it has come to our school. The third year in succession a Mountain Confer- ence trophy was brought home to be displayed in our trophy case. An individual trophy was awarded to Milt Green who was district high scorer with 166 points. The highest number of players placed on the Tribune All-Scholastic team was from our clan when Milt Green, George Pepoy, Bill Riley, Ioe Badaczewski, and Steve Wishinsky were represented. One of our braves, George Pepoy, brought honor to our school by being named on the all-state team, the first to receive this honor at C. T. H. S. The departing seniors of the class of '52 wish the teams of the years to come more success than we have had the pleasure to en- joy. May they continue to produce great teams of high character plus the desire and will to win, which not only builds great teams but men also. ,, IQ: R, MQAMY. ...Q xg I 3 I -.I ,, 5 . BASKETBALL The 1951-52 cagers met with misfortune in 13 of their 18 games during the past season. Having no lull-time coach during the early part of the season caused much of the difficulty. The Indians started off the season in a big Way by downing the Alumni and Shade Town- ship. Traveling to Boswell on December 18, they lost a thrilling one-pointer in overtime. Next on the card came seven Tri-County League games, in which the Indians were defeated by Ebens- burg, Windber, Indiana, Ferndale, and Westmont, twice. They then came back on the win track by beating Somerset. Following this were three more losses at the hands of Iohnstown. Somerset, and Ebensburg. On February 12, they won the first league game by defeating In- diana, in an upset. The surprised Indians followed this by defeating Boswell for their fifth win. In the remaining three games they were overthrown by Ferndale, Windber, and Shade Town- ship. Despite the fact that our team did not fare so well this year in scoring they were a fine bunch of boys with an excellent spirit. These boys played hard from the start to the finish, whether they were winning or los- ing. The boys who saw most of the action were: Verna, Riley, Green, Cable, Sepety, Shirey, and Telenko. Three players will be graduated this year but there will be good material for next year's team.
