The final Whistle at Somerset rang down the cur- tain on the most successful season since the building of the school. Not only did the Indians make the best record with eight Wins and one loss, but completely outdistanced previous e honors received by the team. In league competition C. T. H. Of the eight regulars that played their last game for Conemaugh Township Lockie Boyd and Gib Davis stand out as the most effective l-2 punch in the District. A big man on any- one's team, Anthony Cugini impressed both player and coach as the player to watch. The aggressiveness of Earl Sleek and the dura- bility of Albert Kaltenbaugh made the left side of the line a stone Wall. Ram Mlaker, line general and spark of the team, and George Rahab, brilliant defense man rounded off the forward Wall Which was a coach's dream come true. The Indians' most underrated player, Paul Wasnick, While outshone by most of his famous running mates, Was never outplayed or outfought by any member of the team. Are we on the road to totalitarianism or democracy, regimentation or freedom, materialism or spirituality? As a guiding force, our schools try to teach and inspire our pupils to become spiritually fit and mentally able to govern themselves wisely. Our hope is that we have taught rightly and et- fectively- kindness in the home, honesty in business, helpfulness in society: burden-bearing in work, forgiveness towards the penitentg hope towards the untortunatep self-discipline towards ourselves: selt-sacrifice and service towards the state and nation: a way of life towards hu- manity, reverence, love and obedience toward God. Our faculty and student body have worked together toward these ends and have done several outstanding pieces of work. But there are many more jobs remaining to be done. We shall attempt them as soon as possible. May I express my thanks and appreciation to the teachers, students, school board and all others who so willingly made their contributions to these etforts. G. W. STEPHENS 'Qi PRINCIPAL ALDSTADT, HELEN BOYTS -California State Teachers College. English. COMMENCEMENT-the goal of every high school student is rightly named. High school graduation is not really the end but the be- ginning-a key to the door that opens to con- tinued learning, new experiences, mature activities, worthwhile work. To consider grad- uation more than an opportunity is to invite disappointment and frustration. In high school it is important that we choose wisely, accept responsibility, grow strong, and work and play co-operatively with our fellows. These same qualities will stand you in good stead after May 22, 1950. Oh Conemaugh with spacious halls and campus bright and green, Our fondest memories will remain in each endearing scene. Always we wish for you the best of lite in the years that are to be. TELFORD B. BLOUGH FACULTY BECKLEY, LANDIS P.-B.S Indiana State Teachers Col- lege. This year our school was host to the All-County Chorus in which both Iunior High and Senior High Chcrus took part. Our chorus Was represented by twenty-one members. Even though their activities were somewhat limited, our Senior High Ensemble, composed of twenty-tour voices, Was one of the best in the history ot the school. Miss Shaffer devoted much ot her valuable time to perfecting this excellent group ot singers. SE HIH HIGH ENSE BLE JUNHIH HIEH IIHIIH S In preparation for taking part in the Senior High School Chorus, our Iunior High singers blended their voices in the All-County Chorus program and in assemblies. The librarians of this one hundred and titty-two voice group. directed by Miss Shatter, are Darlene Rotruck and Esther Yoder. Thirty ot our best Iunior High girls formed the Iunior High Ensemble which presented num- erous enjoyable programs at assemblies. Miss Shaffer is preparing these girls for iuture partici- pation in musical affairs. The Conemaugh Township cage team, coached by Walter Shank, had an unlucky season with 9 wins and 12 losses. After Winning 6 out of the first 9 games the Indians proceeded to drop 9 out of the last 12. The Braves had some very tight games, losing to Somerset 38-39 and Ferndale 43-46 and defeating Windber 48-46 and Boswell, 50-48. The worst loss suffered was at the hands of Westmont 30-55. The bright spot in the long string of defeats was the win over a highly touted Windber team which had previously de- feated Conemaugh. Of the first six varsity players four boys played their last game for Conemaugh Township: George Rahab, one of the smoothest ball handlers in the District, Anthony Cugini, hot-handed pivot man, George Harrison, playing for the first time after his leg injury and Paul Wasnick. The first string underclassmen who will form the backbone of next year's team are Don Coughenour, Len Pellatiro, and Frank Urankar. iv, wneenn .1 W' tlIE52iQ'f. September 27, 1949 was the date for the tirst meeting of the Student Council and also the beginning of their many activities which have been greatly appreciated by the student body. Improving hall conduct and the appearance of the girls' rooms was the first project. They took care of selling school supplies and at Christmas decorated the halls of Conemaugh Town- ship High School. The Senior Memorial Plaque, which lists the donations from each of the graduating classes, was finished this year. Naugle. R. Miguet, A. Sendek. R. Fochtman, W.4Maguire, R. Foreback, L. Sterner, P. W Under Coach Walter Shank's management the 1949 baseball team showed a marked improvement over the 1948 season. In the final game CT. H. S. edged Windber to tie that team for second place in the Tri-County league's Section l. Big name for the Braves in this game was Stan Dahoda pitcher. While allowing only 2 runs on 4 hits, his mates garnered 3 runs on 7 hits. This tight 3-2 score is an example of most of the games C.T H S played. The Braves bowed to Richland 6-5, Windber 4-2, and nicked Cone maugh 8-7. These scores show that the Indians are fighting to become a power in the Tri-County league. Along with Dahoda the spotlight was focused on Ray Miguet, the Indians' hitter who usually played in the clean up spot. C. T. H. S. again used the field in Ierome, which was provided by the Ierome American Legion. CLASS HISTIJHY Time it is for the Seniors to start remin- iscing about their six school terms at Cone- maugh Township High School. To get a bet- ter picture of these school day memories let us flash back to our first year at C. T. H. S. 1944-45. The September of that year took on a new meaning for us. Going to the big high school was going to be exciting. It took a few months until our confused minds were cleared and we no longer needed to search frantically for our class rooms or spend five minutes opening our lockers. Although we missed the recesses and the long lunch hours of grade school, we had gradually blended in with high school routine when the term ended. 1945-46. Back again we came for more readin', writin' and 'rithmetic, this time with more confidence. We studied industriously, as only noisy shuffling eighth graders can, look- ing forward to the time when we would be upper-classmen playing an important role at Conemaugh Township High School. 1946-47. Surviving the usual initiation we became full-fledged freshmen and lost no time in getting to work. Ours was the first freshmen class to be organized. Gilbert Davis was elect- ed president, Ann Keafer, vice president: Iohn Kubasik, secretary and Steve Magdelinic. treasurer. Mr. Iames Spory and Miss Mary Iane Bifano were chosen as advisors. In May, 1947 freshmen Ann Keafer and Donald Shortt were given the American Legion Awards for good Citizenship. 1947-48. Time slid on - we were now Sophomores. Although our activities were lim- ited, we sponsored a skating party at which we gave a radio to the lucky door prize win- ner. Miss Ruth Hornick and Mr. Curtis Gren- ninger replaced Mr. Spory and Miss Bifano as deans. Our Sophomore officers were: Gilbert Davis, president, Ralph Mlaker, vice presidentg Iohn Kubasik, secretary, and Ann Keafer, treasurer. 1948-49. Our Iunior year was the year which had many red letter days on our calen- dar. A few of the highlights were: November 19, the Iunior Class presented the play Dear Ruth at which a large audience was humor- ously entertained. December 18-As a pre- Christmas snow fell, we were in a gay holiday mood, dancing to the music of the Swing Band at the annual Christmas Dance. Febru- ary l8-A dramatic rendition of the play Em- peror Iones starring Neal Taylor was given. May 7-With spring came the Iunior-Senior Prom, which featured Dreamland, This was the last big event of our Iunior year. 1949-50. When August 29 rolled around we returned to the halls of Conemaugh Town- ship High School for the last time. We chose new leaders for our Senior Class. Dick Fore- back now became president, with George Har- rison as vice president. Iohn Kubasik became secretary and Ann Keafer, treasurer. Early in the term, lights and a fence were erected on the football field for the '49 gridiron season. Representing us for the Tribune All-Star Foot- ball Team were Anthony Cugini and Lockie Boyd. Also in the spotlight were Ioyce Bockel, violinist, who appeared with the Hormel Girls' Chorus and Orchestra at McKeesport, and Mona Fish, vocalizing on the Starlets On Pa- rade program. The class play, a comedy, en- titled Ianuary Thaw was presented Novem- ber 18, with leading roles played by Delores Negast, Marjorie Cochrane, George Harrison and Gilbert Davis. February 11, was the date set for the Valentine Dance when our class crowned Sally Chynoweth Valentine Queen. We also sponsored a skate March 25. As Sen- iors we were occupied with many activities, hardly realizing that the end of the term was approaching so swiftly. The prom, class day, baccalaureate and commencement occurred in rapid succession. Then we knew our time was up at Conemaugh Township High School. :ibv Qwwbm 'qw 9 Ne, 73' ,WO O Q: Y V627 Qhaow Qt! . - QQ gk, Q xv- ' 'O 'fx w b,'tZ.0 'so 'V Q29 Q' 'W 4 Q, -lo Q' 6 .gp 'l'f'Q, 5 '41, 'w Q .N N9 G Q.
