Handicapped by a schedule more suited to a Class AA school, Coach Mollura's Indians finished the '46 season with a record of three Wins and seven defeats. Every game, from the 20-6 loss to Iohnstown which Was the season's opener to 20-U Wind- ber victory in the final game, Was a hard fought contest With both teams knowing they had been in a fight. In the opener with Iohnstown, the Braves surprised the Trojans for the second straight year by holding them to a two-touchdown victory. In the second garne of the season, the Indians defeated Boswell, 5-U, for their first win of the season. Although hoping for the first Indian football victory over Fern- dale, the Braves lost to the Yellow Iackets I8-U. Victories over Portage, I2-U and Shade, 25-U, followed in the next two games. Ebensburg then took a surprisingly easy 22-U victory to dampen the Tribe's hopes. In their I9-I4 loss to Westmont the Indians played what was the outstanding game of the season. Successive losses to Conemaugh, 26-U, and Somerset, 14-6, then followed and in the season's final game the Indians lost to a stormy Winclber team, 20-U. After subbing for two years, Rodney got his first chance at a first-string position this year and he made good. MIKE GALLO-TACKLE. Big Mike, in his third season with the Braves, shook off a serious leg in- jury received last year and gave the line much needed experience. MARIO BRACKEN-GUARD. Mario, another third year man, made good in his first chance at a first- string assignment. IOE BUTCHKO-BACK. Club, in his first year of first-string action, played a bang-up game at left half. Ioe saw limited action in '45, WALTER FILIMONOV-BACK. Walt, with his ag- gressive spirit, saw action throughout the year. BILL STUTZMAN-BACK. Bill played a fine game this year He's one of the players around whom next year's team will be built. TED CARRICO-CENTER. Bender, although one of the smallest players, proved himself a great center by making the first string Tribune All- Sta1 ' team. Watch him next year. TONY CAPRETTI-BACK. Tony played a lot of good football at left half. Tor isn't very big, but everybody knew he was in there. He's one of the hold-overs for next year. t fl G9 LEFT TO RlGH'l'j'l'onv Cap1z'rti.vEclilloloka. 'llom Telvnko. Don Cotihen. Bolt Montgomery. Victories were recorded over the Faculty, Hooversville, Windber, Ferndale, and Shade Township. The Ferndale victory, one of the biggest upsets in this district, was the Indians' outstanding performance of the year. Conemaugh, Alumni, Westmont, Bedford, Somerset, Boswell, Berlin, and Ferndale all pinned defeats on the Indians. What power the Braves did show was fairly evenly distributed with Carrico, Kocher, Brown, Korns, Cugini, and Dahoda taking high scoring honors at one time or other. The Tribe opened the season on December lUth with successive wins over the Faculty and Hooversville followed by their first defeat of the season at the hands of Conemaugh, 52-39. Outstanding in this meet was the tact that the Indians scored in every event. In their second test of the campaign. the Indians were hard-pressed and were content with third place against formidable opposition. Iohnstown captured top honors with Ebensburg, a team defeated by the Indians in a previous meet, coming out of the fray in the runner up slot, a mere half point better than the Indians. The final standings were still in doubt until the final race of the afternoon when, after a thrilling battle between the Indians' Barndt and lack Tibbott, a potential state champ from Ebensburg, the Red Devils nosed out the Braves to cop second place in that race and in the meet. The first trophy came to Conemaugh Township in the form of a tirst place in the annual Iunior Pitt meet held at Cochran on May 3, l945. Stutzman and VanDivender won the 440 and 880 respectively, while other winners for the Warriors were Kalmanir in the broad jump, Cugini in the javelin, and Kephart in the pole vault. On May ll, a two mile relay team, along with a car- load of field events men, journeyed to Altoona where they entered the Coaches' Relay carnival in that city. Although they had no intentions of entering a team to compare wih tthose of Altoona and Iohnstown, a few trackmen showed up unexpectedly and the Indians pulled the sur- prise of the year by Winning two events and placing second in two others. The two mile relay team composed of Van Divender, Kaltenbaugh, Butchko, and Barndt buzzed the course in eight minutes, 41 seconds, which would com- pare with the top high school teams in the state. In the broad jump, Andy Kalmanir leaped to a victory over some of the best men in District Six and in the high jump and pole vault, Kephart stood up to the best of them before faltering and placing second in each. The win in the relay event brought Conemaugh Township its second trophy of the season, but a school must secure three Wins in that event to keep permanent possession of the prize. Ending the season in a rip-roaring manner. the Indians amassed a total of 98Vz points to easily outclass the Som- erset and Shade Township runners and Win the coveted district championship. Three records were discarded as Kephart set two and Lehman of Somerset broke the mile run mark. District champs from Conemaugh Township were Barndt in the 440, Butchko in the 880, and Kephart in the pole vault and high jump. In addtion, the Indians Won the half-mile and the mile relays. This year, the Indians will be guided by their pre-war coach. Mr. Robert Kelly, who will take over the reins in place of Mr. Grenninger. V 44' u ff F411 ff!
