Nu Music, to create harmony, must investigate discord Now that the war is over, We are trying to get back to normalcy. These have been trying times cmd many sacri- fices have been made both at home cmd at the front. Unless we are able to do straight thinking and line up our actions accord- ingly, we will lose all for which we have fought and sacrificed. Education is the best means through which this can be done. Our country offers to every boy and girl at least a high school education. Any offering less than this weakens us as a nation. Let us be strong. G-. VV. There was much grumbling and complaining, but nevertheless the seniors all agree that the days marched by much too swiftly. lust yesterday, they entered C. T. H. S. as bewildered seventh graders, Wondering what would happen next. Today, they have become the leading ' class, an inspiration to those who will follow. Tomorrow, they will leave the halls of their Alma Mater, to make their contribution, large or small, to society. They may not all become famous men and Women, but each one has gained something very valuable to himself. High School gave them cherished memories of good times, favorite teachers, amusing incidents, and grand school- mates who made life at C. T. H. S. wonderful. The Senior play, a Valentine Dance, the Senior Skate at Westmont Grove, and the movie Guadalcanal Diary were some of the important Senior activities of the year. The class claimed the Victory Loan Queen and King, Iean Mishler and Robert Szala, and the best C. T. H. S. speller, Luda Henry, who represented the school in the County Spelling Contest, sponsored by the Somerset Daily American. Mrs. Margaret Muckley and Mr. Kenneth Thomas as deans super- vised the class led by Robert Szala, president, Robert Kaltenbaugh, vice-president, lean Mishler, secretary, and William Shetler, treasurer. When MTS. Muckley resigned in March, M Horner replaced her as one of the senior deans. rd Work and s rs. Ruth Nineteen IEA-N ANN ARISON-Commercial Course. HELEN BLOUGH-A member of the Class of '45 has returned to Comernaugh Twp. as a post-graduate. Ambition: Study Languages in College. Thirty Three Thirty Four X During the past year this class has by no means been inactive. On the contrary, they have sponsored the first skate of the year, the gala Christmas party, the three-act play, A Certain Young Miss , and their Movie, So Proudly We Hail . Aided by their deans, Mrs. Van Lohr and Mr. Curtis Greninger, this class was responsible for the many happy times that the students have had during the 1945-46 term. The principal reason for all this activity was to raise money for the Iunior-Senior Prom, the main event of the year. When the class held their skating party at Westmont Grove, they had the largest crowd in the past few years. Following their success at Westmont, the class kept on the right track by getting a large crowd at their Christmas party. held in the high school gym. But did they stop here? Certainly not! They went right on with their hit of the year, the class play. Among this group were some of Conemaugh Township's athletic stars who will probably show up well next year and help to give the Indians a winning team. Leading the Iuniors this past term were Bill Stutzman, president, Stella Zabo, vice-presi- dent, Betty Ritchey, secretary, and Iosephine Klimek, treasurer. These four did a good job of guiding the class and will be looking forward toward giving more service to the class next year. To the class who will step into the top spot next year we say, Good luck. We know you'1l be a real asset to the school. Thirty Five 1- ELEVENTH GRADE FIRST ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT-Y. Gusmerotti, S. Zahn G. Telford, P. Shroyer, P. Butchko, M. Naugle, I. Klimek, M Thompson. D. They have already shown their ability to produce valuable football and basketball material. With a class of a hundred fifteen members, the Sophomores elected Miss Shaffer and Mr. Hanna as their class deans. The positions of offices of the class were filled by lack Korns, presi- dent, Annabelle Racosky, vice-president, Inez Rullo, secretary and Theodore Carrico, treasurer. Capable leadership is found in this class. A Skating Party was held in the Westmont Grove as a final event of the year. This party gave the Sophomores a good financial start and it is with great sincerity the Seniors say: Much success to next year's juniors. TENTH GRADE FIRST ROW - LEFT TO RIGHT-R. Valentine, I. The Littles are a family with opinions of their own, with temperaments to express themselves. To start the ball rolling, Daddy Little finds all his daughter's friends young hoodleems and Ham Ellers the worst one. Ironically, Ham is the fellow Goody, his daugh- ter, chooses. Mr. Little has his own candidate for his daughter's affections, Norman Peel, so in desperation Goody tries to be the right kind of a daughter. Then there is Filmer, who can't keep out of trouble, and has the urge to be a hero or a villian. Pilmer has his own trouble with love, quite as desperate to him as Goody's to her. Through three acts the quick-tempered Littles squabble their way through differences in viewpoint and ridiculous situations. Finally, Mr. Little finds that young folk aren't all going to the dogs after all. This play based on Booth Tarkington's novel had the following cast: Ham Ellers is por- trayed by Robert Van Divender, Mr. Little by Robert Barndt, Filmer by Iames Weaver, Nor- man Peel by Richard Stahl, Dicky Harpeddle by Neil Kaufman, Goody by Gaynelle Kocher, Mrs. Little by Helen Starvish, Cousin Olita by Rachel Lou Kauffman, Henrietta Peller by Marian Barbin, Antoniette by Elizabeth Miguet, Mrs. Harpeddle by Betty Stevens, Miss Uologa by Dorothy Huff, Alrnatina by Elizabeth Unger, Cockoo by Lucy Capretti and Screwball by Mary Sepety. 04 Ji 4 , QQ fe , S A - gy f -,FISA X 3, In Q '0 Q -:ii f ft X4 A Certain Young Miss was presented by the Iunior Class on Valentine Day under the supervision of Miss Verda P. A week before school opened the boys were put through some very rigid training at football camp. Although they worked hard at camp they enjoyed it immensely. Different captains were chosen before each game of the season. This was done in order to players a chance to play the role of captain. The Braves who will be leaving the Alma Mater to go their separate ways are: Ronald Kephart, Robert Szala, Robert Urban, Richard Rullo, Andy Kalmanir, Edward Lloyd, William Cobaugh, who left for the Marines the first of the year, Warren Young, and Eugene Morelli. Robert Szala was chosen on the first line of the All Star Team and Andy Kalmanir took a position on the second team as a back. Honorable men- tion was given to the remainder of the team. The lettermen who will make up next year's team are: Richard Cugini, Bender Carrico, Mike Gallo, Wil- liam Stutzman, Tony Capretti, Rodney Lintz, and Orville Carnahan. give all senior Mr. Howard Helsel, who has been Faculty Manager for five years regulates game schedules, attends to the Athletic Association's finances, and is responsible for pur- chasing athletic awards and equipment. Louis Hanna who has been the football and basket- ball coach at Conemaugh Township for the past three years has led the Indians through numerous victories and defeats. He possesses all qualities of good sportsmanship. Along with the duties as supervisor of the Varsity C Club, he was elected dean of the sophomore class. It's a busy life - if you don't believe me, try it, says Coach Hanna Coach. Seventy Three ,. L CONEMIAUGH TWP.-U WESTMONT-0 Although it was a very close game, neither team could score against each other nor go beyond the twenty yard line. The first downs and yardages were approximately even. ...,, FOOTBALL SCORES CONEMAUGH TWP.-0 IOHNSTOWN-7 In their opening game Coach Hanna's War- riors held the strong Iohnstown Trojans to a single touchdown. Great defensive play of the braves was outstanding in this game along with a 58-yard run by Kalmanir. CONEMAUGH TWP.-33 BOSWELL-0 The Indians had very little trouble pinning a defeat on the Boswell Bears. Coach Hanna's numerous substitutions held down the score. CONEMAUGH TWP.-U FERNDALE-6 With forty-five seconds left to play, the Ferndale Stingers stung the Braves by a 6-U margin. The Townshippers had a total of thirteen first downs and 297 yards rushing and passing while the winners followed with one first down and forty seven yards of rushing and passing. CONEMAUGH TWP.-46 EBENSBURG-0 Chief Hanna was doubtful as to whether his Indians would win - but his doubt was short- lived. Against such outstanding clubs as Iohns- town and Windber, Conemaugh Township yielded only 27 points over a ten-game schedule. The sterling work of the line was the answer. No. 57-Richard Rullo Richard, playing his third season of varsity ball, was outstanding defensively. He was very aggressive and operated on the basis of stopping the offense before it got started. Cons- Cientious-he never missed a practice session. No. Bl-Eugene Morelli Eugene filled in capably toward the latter part of the season for the injured Mike Gallo. Handicapped by lack of experience, he never- theless handled his end of the line Well. No. 65-Robert Urban Bob was the number one reason why opponents found the middle of the Indian line tough. Not the dazzling type of a player, he is as solid as the Rock of Gibralter . He will be missed very much. No. 62-Theodore Carrico Theodore, a sophomore, was a terror back- ing up the line. Handicapped by his lack of weight, he nevertheless plugged any holes that appeared. He's rough and tough, aggressive and fast: watch this boy in 1946 and 1947. No. 56-Robert Szala Bob, the district's choice for the all-star team, teamed up with Urban to form the best guard. combination seen all year. He was hon- orably mentioned on the all-state team and worthy of it. He continually was the fifth man in our opponent's backfields. No. 59-Richard Cugini Look out for Richard in 1946. Big and tough, Dick will go to town this fall. He can play any position on the line which he proved in 1945 by moving from the center position to his tackle spot. No. 63-Ronald Kephart Red proved to be outstanding offensively. He scored l7 points in 1945 and excelled in pass receiving. The Indians will miss this glue- fingered end. eventy Six THE BACKS Handicapped by the lack of Weight and experience our backs nevertheless combined with the line to score a total of 176 points. Averaging approximately 140 lbs., these boys proved to be one of the lightest combinations in the district. The only letterman from 1944 was quarter- back Edward Lloyd, who played halfback in 1945. Kalrnanir, Capretti, Young, Stutzman, and Cobaugh were all inexperienced. Picture left to right: No. 55-Warren Young Whitey played fullback and made up for his inexperience by his fight. Handicapped in early season by a leg injury, he ended the season with a bang. No. 54-Andrew Kalmanir Andy Was the student manager in 1944, did an about face in 1945 to be chosen on the all-district team and was this season's leading scorer :and open-field runner deluxe. No. 58-Anthony Capretti Tony, a sophomore, alternated with Bill Stutzman at the quarterback slot. He excelled on the defensive, was a good tackler and will improve . . . extra point specialist. No. 53-Edward Lloyd Eddie was one of the most under-rated backs in the district. He Wasn't a razzle-dazzle player, but he could get those few yards when We needed them, and Was one of the best line backers to play for C. T. H. S. He was a dynamic player, never asking for any quarter and never giving any. Whip's absence in 1946 will be felt. Seventy Seven Fx, wwf si.- ,I M I ,I I Z! I o ,AV ,Q ST ROW LEFT TO RIGHT-S. The Indians' first test came on April 20 at Westmont in a quadrangular meet with West- mont, Iohnstown, and Ebensburg. The Indians came out second to a strong Iohnstown team. The Twippers showed up well by taking at least one position in each event. Number two meet was held at Cochran on April 28 with Iohnstown, Somerset, Conemaugh Township, and Westmont competing. Iohnstown again copped first place with Somerset coming in second and Conemaugh Township third. Elvin Steeg was the only Conemaugh Township man to take a first place. The Warriors took at least one position in eleven of the thirteen events. On May ll, the Indians broke the ice and took first place in a quadrangular meet at Cresson. The Braves, with 64 points, were again paced by Elvin Steeg, who turned in his best time of the year in the 100-yard dash, 10.2 seconds. Again the Twippers placed in eleven of thirteen events. Their best performance was in the pole vault Where they took first, second, third, and fourth. Also participating in this meet were Cresson, Adams Twp., and Hollidaysburg. On May 19 the Indians traveled to Somerset to take the District Five title. For the second time the Indians placed in each event, taking five of seven track events, and one field event, the pole vault. Standing out in the 1945 season was Elvin Steeg, a Senior, who was undefeated in the 100-yard dash and suffered only one setback in the 220. This excludes the state meet.
