HTL 103 Y 1 1 1 A Q S I i 1 The strain ot War has affected every school effort and activity, has changed men- tal attitudes cmd objectives. Any healthy boy or girl above seventeen years of age can earn a salary previously unheard oi. The temptation to leave school is real and destructive to upper classmen. The call to our country's service has depleted our numbers and changed their outlook on life. Let us who are left at home not be led away for the time being, but rather let us abide with the more lasting things of life and build for the future. Spiritual discipline and education cannot be displaced by any high salaried position. Benjamin Franklin once said, We deserve liberty only so long as we are willing to sacrifice some- thing for it. So, also, Will We deserve the better things of life as long as we are willing to work and strive for them. G. W. STEPHENS Eight SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL GEORGE W. STEPHENS Mr. Stephens attended West Ches- ter College where he obtained his B. S. degree . . . he has done gradu- ate work at Columbia University and as Supervising Principal continuously strives for educational improvements and maintenance ot high standards for Conemaugh Township schools. it ACTING PRINCIPAL f IAMES W. SPonY - Mr. Spory secured his B. S. and M. Ed. degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. As Acting Principal and Wrestling Coach he sought to X I combine good scholarship and ath- letic ability in order to establish high standards of sportsmanship. That we should do unto others as We would have them do unto us- that we should respect the rights ot others as scrupulously as we expect to have our own respected-is not only a personal admonition for individual perfection but is the basis for all local and national groups in the con- sideration of a just and durable peace. OUR DEANS ...... Miss Wardlaw ...... Mr. Hanna CLASS HISTORY Six years ago the seniors, then the seventh graders, entered C. T. H. S. and strolled the halls in bewilderment for the tirst six weeks. As freshmen, they thought they knew a lot, but upon becoming sophomores, they began to realize how little of the knowledge stored at Conemaugh Township High School they had absorbed. When juniors, they looked forward to becoming dignified seniors. But most of them became seniors last spring without becom- ing too dignitiedp however, they had learned that profitable use of time pays dividends. Upon entering this good Alma Mater, the class numbered 209, upon leav- ing the class has decreased to llU members. The large decrease in the class was caused mainly by boys entering the Armed Forces. Although most of these sailors, soldiers, and marines won't be here at commencement exer- cises, they will be present in our minds. The most cherished memories ot the Senior Class of '45 will be those of just learning, playing and living with a swell group of classmates and teachers. This class elected as its deans, Mr. Thomas and Miss Bantley. When Miss Bantley resigned, Mrs. Muckley was chosen to take her place. Early in the term, a skating party was held to put a little do-re-mi in the treasury. The valentine dance, the movie Captain Fury , and the junior play, On Our Street were among the highlights of the year. The task ot sponsoring the Iunior- Senior Prom, which falls to every junior class, Was well done. This year's prom Was held in May according to tradition. The students miss greatly their classmates who have entered the serv- ice. These boys have gone out to per- form a duty harder than anything they might have done here at Conemaugh Township High School. OUR IUNIOR OFFICERS ...... George ...... Gaynelle ..,... Bob . , . . FOOTBALL With tive returning lefftermen from last year's squad, the Cone- maugh Township High School Indians were able to take wins from Boswell, Portage, Shade Township, and Ebensburg and lost to such highly rated teams: as, Iohnstown, Ferndale, Westmont, Cone- maugh, Somerset and Windber. The varsity squad was made up of five seniors, six juniors, and also many promising 9th and 10th graders. Two weeks before school started about fifty boys answered Coach Louis Hanna's call for volunteers for the varsity, but the squad was soon narrowed down to about twenty-seven members. During these two weeks the players would report for practice at 9:00 A. M. and would practice till about 11:30 A. M. when the boys would eat their lunch in the high school home economics room. Re- porting again for practice at 1:00, they would practice till about 5:00 P. M. Before the opening game, Coach Hanna chose Iohn Da- hoda, Harold Lehman and Wayne Thomas to act as the team's co-captains for the football season. The following boys played their last game for Conemaugh Township: Iohn Dahoda, Harold Lehman, Lindy Melker, Harold Brown, Wayne Thomas and Donald Kocher, all of whom are seniors. Two juniors, George Adams who joined the Navy and Archie Gray who joined the Merchant Marines, also played their last game. Next year's squad will be built around the following returning veterans: Ronald Kephart, Robert Szala, Richard Cugini, Robert Urban, Mike Gallo, Richard Rullo, Bill Cobaugh, and Edward Lloyd. The team consisted of six letter men, three seniors and three juniors. On the tirst team were two seniors and three juniors: namely: Thomas and Kalmanir-forwards, Custer and Adams-guards. and Kephart-center. This was the starting line-up from the beginning ot the season until near the end of it when George Adams joined the Navy. He was replaced by Havrilak who was replaced by English. During the last few games Coach used under- classmen to give them experience. When the final whistle was blown and the scores tallied up, the Indians showed a record of 9 wins and 11 losses. THE PEP GIRLS Dumthv Verna Marv Louise Rullo Our energetic cheerleaders were with the boys for better or for worse this term. They yelled long and loud at games and inspired the students to do likewise. Miss Hurst supervised the Pep Girls of C. T. H. S. BAND With their stirring music, their flashy uniforms, and their clever marching, the members of the band certainly made a fine appearance at the football games. In the fall the band also played for the solemn flag raising service in Davidsville. Here they stood reverently, while tribute was again paid to the gallant defenders of our great nation. Nor was the band idle during the summer, for they played at the Casebeer, Otterbein, and St. Thomas picnics, and turning to the patriotic side of affairs they toured through the Township during the Fifth War Loan Drive. These sixty-nine young musicians under the baton of Mrs. Van Lohr played for nearly every assembly program. True spirit was expressed in their playing at the pep rallies. Willingly they played at the Somerset County Supervisors' Convention in Ianuary. However, to show people just how talented our band really is, an excellent concert, The Music Capades of 1945, was presented by the Music Department in March. CONNUMACH The Connumach, annual publication of the senior class of Conemaugh Township High School, is based on the Indian theme, for Conemaugh Township w-a-a-a-y back was a hunting ground for the Indians. This book is dedicated to our forefathers because to each one of them we are indebted for the fine township we today inhabit. Under the guidance of faculty advisers, the staff headed by Leland Blough and Helen Blough hoped to make this book a cherished possession of every student. Enfolded between its covers is the complete story of the year 1944-45. The staff worked hard- and with one goal in mind-to please the student body.
