THE HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL We, the 1943 Seniors, are very proud of having the privilege of graduating from one of the largest and finest rural high schools in Pennsylvania. We give our thanks to the tax- payers of the township who made this school possible by supporting its construction back in 1938-1939. The cost was more than S350,000, forty-five percent of which was contributed by the Federal government. More than 125,000 man hours were put into the building which is 408 feet long, and which has a perimeter of one quarter of a mile. The first school term opened October 10, 1939 with an enrollment of nine-hundred-sixty students With seventy seniors. These seniors were formerly tuition students and represented eight different high schools. Not having the building completely finished during the first term the classes were held most of the year on the second floor and in the gymnasium. The second year there were 1,002 students with ninety-three in the graduating class. A slight increase was noticed the third year, 1940-41, with a membership of 1,030 including 107 graduates. During the fourth term there Were 1,063 students and 133 seniors. This year's enrollment suffered a rather large de- crease having 120 graduates and 980 under- graduates. Many Were inducted into the serv- ices, while others left to Work in war indus- tries, thus causing a great reduction in the en- rollment. The first year the faculty consisted of thirty-four members and since then has been increased to thirty-six. Although the high school is a rural school, it, offers quite a variety of courses namely: academic, --commercial, vocational -agriculture, vocational home economics, physical educa- tion, art and instrumental, and vocal music. The music department has made great prog- ress since the school Was organized. During the third year the Booster's Club outfitted the entire band with uniforms. This year seven buses daily transport 965 students to the high school. These same buses also furnish transportation for the five hundred grade school children housed in six buildings. Thus our transportation bill is probably the cheapest in Pennsylvania-six cents per pupil per day. '
