COHIAN 1959 Vol. 18 Conecuh County High School Castleberry, Alabama t i ] FOREWORD To our students, faculty and friends we, the Cohian Staff, bring the 1959 COHIAN through the immortal name of Conecuh County. In the above county we symbolize the Indian word, Conecuh, meaning Land of Cane. Throughout the book we have attempted to portray the scenes in and surrounding our Conecuh County High School, such as: Panther Creek, which many of our students cross on their way to school; the roads they travel to school; the water tank from which they receive their water; the steps upon which they make entrance to our school; the beautiful trees that provide shade; and the strawberry patches for which our town is remembered. I, the editor, would like to take this opportunity to thank our most devoted sponsor Miss Barlow, and the Cohian Staff for their time and effort rendered toward making the COHIAN possible. We have hoped to make each and every student feel that this is solely HIS yearbook. The EDITOR TO THE MEMORY OF MISS LUTHER The life of Conecuh County High School was begun in 1914 under the capable leadership of its first principal, Miss Sarah Emerson Luther, who instilled into those first pupils the great motto, Our horizon widens as it climbs. Greater heights were reached as Miss Luther drove her horse and buggy over the community and county recruiting pupils. Once in the school, they were instructed, encouraged, and led by the firm, patient, understanding, and scholarly Miss Luther. She gave freely of her time and talent in countless ways--encouraging youth to seek an education, building morale of students in their quest for knowledge, and leading young people in graceful living. To the memory of Miss Sarah Emerson Luther, an influential pioneer woman in the field of ed- ucation in Conecuh County, we, the Cohian Staff, humbly, and proudly dedicate the eighteenth volume of the COHIAN. FACULTY Mr. M.C. Thomasson Principal A teacher builded a temple, With loving and infinite care; Planning each arch with patience Laying each stone with care. None praised her unceasing efforts; None knew of her wondrous plan. For the temple the teacher builded Was unseen by the eyes of man.
