' i ±:- ' ADVENTURERS Miles pass beneath us, churned in our wake, A battle of elements, steel against sea. The force we must show, our futures at stake. Peace-ward we look at the lanes we keep free. Adventure and Job are one and the same. And death lurks nearby, for those who are careless. Through the lives that we risk, the seas are kept tame. Though the task be difficult, or mission perilous. But adventurers too, have need of some rest. Their long Journeys all, someday reach an end. As eagles roam free, then return to the nest. So must we sailors, to our eaglets attend. VTT :t-x REPLENISHMENT USS CONCORD is a Mars Class Combat Stores Ship. It carries in its five holds about 28,000 different items of fresh, frozen, and dry provisions including general and technical supplies as well as fuel oil. These supplies are delivered to the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean and transported to their decks using the most modern naval techniques in the world. These techniques were developed so that fighting ships would not have to leave their area of operations to replenish themselves. In Underway Replenishment the goods are delivere d at sea. Unreps are accomplished by connected, along side replenishment and vertical, helicopter replenishment. Orders from customer ships arrive via radio message, processed by automatic data processing computers and then cargo is prepared for delivery. In photo 1, SKI Allen Watson locates a tiny part in one of the many small drawers of Hold 1 while SKSN Barry Craven and SK3 Tony Clayton breakout bulkier supplies from Hold 2 in photo 2. Once broken out, supplies are then boxed and palletized as SK2 Mike Brown, OSSN Charles Davis, SKI Francis Cantada, and OSSA William Barnhill are doing in photo 3. In photo 4 are Unrep team members SK3 Rick Todhunter, SK3 Mike Byrd, LTjg Art Tibayan, SKI Keith Church, and SKSA Kevin Ferrell. These men are responsible for the paper work required to get the goods on board, then to make sure the right goods get to the right customer. Essential to Connected Replenishment, SR Al Alcon, SR Jeff Thomas, and a shipmate make ready the STREAM equipment (Standard Tension Replenishment Alongside Meathod) which keeps high-tensioned cargo tines in constant, even tension (photo 5). Once all other preparations are made, cargo is staged on the decks as in photo 6. ready to be delivered. Photo 7 shows FN Dave Gbson in Main Control answering the bells that take CONCORD out to sea. QMSN Dwayne Kluck in photo 8 is shown determining the ship ' s position which will be plotted and compared to the customer ' s portion so the two can meet. SR Andrew Golden, SR James Phelps, SA James Daniels, SA Dwayne Morrison, and SA Scott Eckhart wait in proper attire in photo 1. OSS Bert McGlaughlin in photo 2 picks up the customer ship on radar and passes the information to the ' wayne Kluck, MMFN Paul Lamorgese, and ENS Al Nerjno monitor course adjustments. In photo 4, GMG3 Nathan Wiggins and SA Andy Reichle wait on deck to fire shot lin from ship to ship. Finally the customer ship, in photo the USS Eisenhower (CVN-69, makes its approach. As it doet Vertrep commences using Concord two HC-46 helicopters. When th iship is in position along side, she lines are fired and passed as i photos 5,6, and 7 which will be use to haul the cables from ship to ship . Kltts Photo 1 shows the Ike dwarfing Concord sailors as it pulls alongside. In the winch control booth in photo 2 BM2 Dave Smith, SR Kimbert Ramos, BM3 Dale Beaudette, BMSN Pat Smith, and BM3 Jeff Schueler keep a carefull eye on the cables. CAPT Don Boecker oversees operations from the starboard bridge wing in photo 3. His successor, CAPT F. J. Dougherty at work (photo 4). • I Photo 5 and 6 shows cargo being placed into position and made ready for transporting. Electric winches haul lines in and out to lift the cargo off the deck and over to the customer (photo 7). In photo 8, CW03 Eugene Butler, Ship ' s Bos ' n, keeps an experienced eye on safety and efficiency on station 6. Once a pallet of cargo is in place, all attention is on getting it moved safely. In photo 2, BM3 Herdis Brown, BM3 Dave Hander, SA William Dickens, GMGSN Ken Elliott, SN George Torrence and BMl Ronald Stiles watch a load come under tension and raise off the deck. On another station, BMl Ernest Ashe signals the winch operator to raise the load just a bit more in photo 4. Following a long hit with the Ike, PNSN Steve Fish and guest from the British Royal Navy watch her head for the horizon and another conrep is complete. HELSUPPRON SIX KVIATION FLIGHT SCHEDULE . . helicopters and air crew to Replenishment or Vertrep. The schedule board in photo 1 shows the earlj hours they must sometimes work. In photo 2, A T3 Tony Mari is shown personalizing a wing stub shortly after arriving on board. A02 Don Lehman in photo 3 and AMSl Ricky Simpson in photo 4 go through some of many safety and operational checks that must be performed to maintain an accident free evolution. of helicopter, but it still has to be pushed out onto the flight deck. Shown in photo 5 are AD2 Dale Allen, A02 Don Lehman, ARC Jose Vargas, and LT Sam Savas pushing while L T Ray Higgins rides and A T3 Tony Man drives in photo 9. Getting the cargo ready is the next step. In photos 6 and 7, SKI Rich Higgins moves a pallet into place by fork truck while SN Joel Glass, BTFN Gary Gill, BTFN Randy Bates, and BTFN Rick Williams, wrap the cargo in cargo nets. An evolution ' s worth of Vertrep cargo can fill a flight deck as can be seen in photo 8. • i Once the evolution begins and the helos are in the air the rest of the vertrep is a routine b ut tricky hovering over the cargo to be hooked up as in photos 1 and 2, and liked off the deck and over to the customer ship as in photos 3, 4, 5, and 6.
