RTURE:From lilier lTligflA, Charleston, S C 30 April 1974 THE USS COMPASS ISLAND QAG-1535 departed her new homeport of Charleston, South Carolina, for her long-anticipated three-month European deployment on the last day of April 1974. This departure came after much hard work by all hands. There was much to do in loading out the ship and meeting every requirement to get underway on- time. Although the cruise would mean leaving many loved ones behind for a long period of time, the relief at finally being underway and the excitement of see- ing new places was felt by nearly everyone.
