With her destination official, AG-153 was given a special two-fold mission. Along with the technical responsibili- ties of the cruise, we would have time for fun. The first half of their mission was to broaden the knowledge concerning some navigational systems by expos- ing them to the Eastern Atlantic. The second portion was to bring the U.S. closer to overseas countries through personal contact between ourselves and the local citizens. 2 s F ' i 2 1 1 I 1 g . 1 s eff 2-iff it ' l at A -1 5 A, .. The crew drank their last of Norway's bitter, yeasty beer and mingled for a final time with the inhabitants of Oslo before heading out into the ocean. Twenty days loomed ahead after Compass Island departed from Nor- wegian waters before the crew would be in New York Harbor once again. Packed from stem to stern with Nor- wegian pewter, Scandinavian jewelry, and a few English motorcycles the crew grew anxious for home. ,w.Q.,,.Q. , . ,iv 1' .e' , , .- ' b wi -,,k....,, , 'rw mr. 5 , ,. Hav- ing followed the standard Navy tradi- tion of setting the Arctic Circle buoy watch, the ship brazenly stumbled into the Northern reaches and the land of the duly worshipped Borealis Rex. The crew of Compass Island had been told that Borealis Rex, King of the Arctic, Denizen of the Deep, and Pulchritudinous Prelate of the Polly- wogs was a pretty nice guy. After be- ing graciously received by Borealis Rex, all on board became honored members of the Fraternal and Royal Order of the Blue Nose, an honor only for those who venture into the Arctic. vi g4 g, W lx . gm FW i B W F W ri , x LV. :M vig IE MW W HQ A AW 'JU HV HW H WE HI X. Their tasks com- pleted, AG-153 steamed toward her home port as directly as the navigator would allow. With only 162 hours and 16 min- utes to New York, the crew set about relaxing and keeping busy in order to make the time go faster. Many of the crew participated in target practice on deck.
