LTHOUGH some of the most beautiful and worthwhile things in life cannot
be catalogued as fact, they play a vital part in the development of our finer
selves. Sculpture, art, music, and poetry reveal a world of fancy in which the
fire of the spirit glows. In that vast body of poetical expression, classical mythol-
ogy, the virtues and weaknesses of human nature are mirrored in the tales of
jason and the Golden Fleece, one of the most symbolic of the myths, is used
as the theme of our book. Various episodes of jason's attempt to reach his
goal are illustrated and interpreted by hand drawings and feature articles.
The circumstances connected with Jason's departure in search of the Fleece
are these: Jason, son of Aeson in Thessaly, upon returning home from a distant
school, found Pelias, his uncle. ruling in his father's place. Pelias agreed to sur-
render the throne in return for the Golden Fleece, the fleece of the ram sent by
the god Jupiter to save Phrixus. It was well known that no one had ever returned
from this perilous journey, for the Fleece was guarded by a sleepless dragon.
When .lason's ship, Argo, was ready, he started off with many valiant heroes
of Greece, among whom was Orpheus who cheered the sailors with his lyre. The
Argonauts, for so the sailors were called, met with many obstacles. Undaunted
by seemingly impossible tasks, Jason never relinquished his determination to secure
Medea, daughter of the king, who knew where the Fleece hung, gave jason
ointment with which to rub his body before encountering the Brazed-hoofed bulls,
which he used in plowing the field of Mars. He sowed the field with the dragon's
teeth given to him by Minerva, the Goddess. Not only did Medea tell him where
to Find the tree, but she also gave him a liquid to pour over the eyes of the dragon
that guarded it. As soon as the monster's eyes were closed in sleep Jason seized
the prize. Medea returned to Greece with Jason, as his bride.
