Front Row: Margaret Wells, Frances Robson, Virgil Prater, Susan Stokes, Iulius Moreland. EVER SINCE EVE On Friday evening, Ianuary ll, a very appreciative audience witnessed the performance of Ever Since Eve , a rollicking comedy of adolescence. The play unfolds the struggles of Iohnny and Stub to edit the school paper- With the undesired aid of Susan and Betsy. The boys pledge to ignore girls and to expend their efforts on their paper-until luscious southern Lucy-Belle enters their lives. Three -cases of measles, Susan's efforts to save the paper and rivalry with Lucy-Belle bring the heroes to their senses-and take the cast through many laughable situations. The cast members portrayed their roles very commendably and realistically. Mr. Matson directed the play. MRS. CLOVER ..... IOHN NY CLOVER .... MR. CLOVER ..... SPUD ERWIN ..... SUSAN BLAKE ..... The prospects for next season are bright, with six first stringers expected back, a second string which will have gained valuable playing experience, and several outstanding prospects moving up from this year's second place lunior squad. After losing a pre-season encounter to- Camas, Washington, the Stenogs, to the surprise of every- one, held the city champion Grant team to a scoreless tie in the quarter played at Multnomah stadium, finally losing onbz 18-O at Grant. The generals scored two touchdowns on intercepted passes. The team then whipped the Lincoln Cardinals 13-7, showing a strong offensive and scoring in the first and fourth quarters on a 20-yard pass from Krause to McNeil and a 17-yard run by Dwain Doak. The squad then lost to Roosevelt 25-U, and to Washington 26-l'3, but scored the major upset of the season by defeating the Benson Techmen 14-13. The Mechanics outweighed the Stenogs 30 pounds to the man. lt was the first time Commerce had defeated Benson since 1935. The Stenogs spotted Benson 13 points, then scored twice in the final five minutes of the game, Mel Krause kicking both extra points to cinch the contest. Krause and Dick Winchell scored the touchdowns, both from the one-yard line. The team ended the season with losses to Iefferson 26-O, and to Franklin 27-12. The 1945 Stenogs scored eight touchdowns and four conversions for 52 points, the largest point total for a Commerce squad in several years. Following is the eleven that started most of the games this season: Ierry McNeil played his second season as first string right end. Not only was he a good pass receiver, but he always played an outstanding defensive game. Chuck Bafaro started most of the ga-mes at the- other end post. He was a good offensive end, catching passes for many large gains and scoring against Washington. LaVerne Valentine was moved over from an end post to strengthen the tackle position and gave a good account ofehimself. I' Wes Bartholomaus was the largest man in the Stenog line and a stalwart at tackle. He was a stalwart to be reckoned with on plays through his position. Don Bartholomaus played at guard and in every game gave his all for the team. lt takes men of Don's spirit to make a fighting football squad. Frank Lawrence moved into the other guard post after Lyle Colling's tragic death early in the season and played hard, fighting football at all times. Iulie Moreland was one of the best centers Commerce has had for a number of years. He called defensive signals and was usually the first man through to break up opposing plays. Mel Krause, the team captain, did a wonderful job of calling plays throughout the season from his quarterback post. He was considered by many as the best passer in the league and was placed on' the All City team. He was also one of the best defensive backs in the city. Dwain Doak at halfback was Commerce's hardest running back. He was the leading Stenog ground-gainer in every game and did most of the punting. Don Strand usually played the other halfback post. Don made some nice runs during the season and was also a good pass receiver. Dick Winchell and lim Cunningham alternated at fullback throughout the season. Both boys excelled at plunging and running, and Winchell tied with Doak for team high point honors. Other boys who saw a lot of action during the season were: Frank Bagan, center: Bob Vanderpool, guard: lack Shields, tackle: lerry Sears, end, Bob Hilken, end: Vic Baird, halfbackg Chuck Bernard, guard: and lack Boden, guard. Mel Krause, Don Bartholomaus, Frank Lawrence, Iulie Moreland, Don Strand, and Bob Hilken are the only players who will be lost through graduation. ukwsiiflz v AUTUGRAPHS i AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS
