To the Graduates :
As you leave the High School of Commerce to go forth into the
field of your endeavors, it is my earnest hope that by reason of your
four years with us, you may be the better equipped to deal intelli-
gently with the important problems both of private and public life.
Hay the habits of reading, of thinking. and of analyzing situations
with the various causes and effects have become so highly developed
that they may be virtues of inestimalmle value,
We, in America are facing a new age. a period of marked transi-
tion. the tendencies of which one sees and hears constantly. To cope
with these serious confronting problems. there will be urgent. need of
the highest form of citizenship.
The introduction of intricate machinery together with many
other factors such as the decline of the smaller villages and cities and
the condition of the American farmer. have shattered our boasts of
great prosperity and security. for these seem to lie farting before our
One needs but to delve into the pages of history to tind that
several nations have risen to great heights only to have their pros-
perity and success contribute to their own decay and ultimate down-
fall. Lately. the United States has gained an important position in
the history of the world. Will America continue to be the land ofhope
and promise or will she too meet this same fate? Does it not lnehoove
us to be constantly on our guard lest our own country comes to the
same unfortunate ending that other countries before her have expe-
rienced? The future and destiny of our country lies largely in the
hands of the young people in our schools. colleges. and universities ol'
today. lt is my hope that you feel prepared to take your part intelli-
gently. seriously and courageously.
