Since several other area Honor Societies had gone on educa- tional trips, the local NHS hoped to ac- complish the same. However, it was not possible to earn enough money for a trip this year. One new idea initiated this yearwas having the Seniors wear a NHS emblem on their graduation gowns. This gives recognition to the Seniors who belong to the Society and also places an emphasis on academics rather than sports at graduation. The Student Council is the representative group of the student body. Members are chosen on a class basis each spring. They sponsor many events throughout the year. The mock election in November was held under the direction of the Student Council. They also planned the various assemblies heldthrough- out the year. Probably the most important decision they made this year was the referendum issue. This issue was formed then returned to the students for their opinion of it. Of the four proposals, all of them passed. One of the issues was num- ber of Student Council members. The number from each class was raised one. Another was election of Frosh members. They will now be chosen proportionately at St. Anthony's and Vaughnsville, according to the percentage of stu- dents attending each school. The advisor of the Student Council is lVlr. Sporting a 5-1 record and a first place tie, the Bulldogs learned again how tough it is to stay on top as they yielded to a fine Paulding team in a bitter 12-14 battle. With an outside chance at the title, the Grove defense came through again and kept the hopes alive as tough Spen- cerville bowed 30-6. Home at last for the final game and a chance at the title, the offense chewed up a scrappy Delphos-Jefferson eleven in their greatest effort 58-14---then waited for the final results of the best balanced league in years to come in---and hand Columbus Grove's 1968 Bulldog football team their share of the top spot---Number One in the Northwest Con- ference! The way to the top is difficult--but it's a lot easier to get there than to stay there. The 1968 Bulldog gridders can testify to this statement, as they faltered twice before finally winning through to their final triumph- Exploiting a dazzling running and passing game, the Bulldogs shut out their opening opponent North Baltimore in a 48-O blitz. Proving their sock-it-to-'em defense was no f1uke, Grove downed powerful favorite Bluffton on their home field 6-2, with the only scores in the game obtained by the defensive teams. Coming home with two wins on the road, the Bulldogs broke a first half tie with the dangerous Elida eleven to win going aw ay 50-16. With one leg on the Bulldog Trophy, the Grove effort was not enough to overcome Ada, and 6-14 defeat was ab- sorbed, dashing hopes for the Bulldog Trophy in 1968. Home--for Homecoming--and the Bulldogs again broke out in the second half for a 46-6 win over a good Perry team for a long overdue Homecoming victory! E Sex 'ig , Q if ., '5 V H 7 1' Q Co-Captains pose with some of the trophies. District participants and the trophy they won. The 1969 Track team compiled a fabulous record of 72 wins and two losses. This record includes the District Track 81 Field meet. Grove handily won the first two meets they parti- cipated in. In the first two meets they defeated a total of three teams. At the Lakota Invitational Meet, the Grove squad suffered their only defeat, as they placed third behind Lakota fa AA schooll and Lakeview. Lakeview earlier in the year won the State AA Cross-Country meet. Last year we won the Lakota Invitational. 17 schools partici- pated. The next two meets were tri-meets, with Grove far outdistancing their opponents. Grove's next vic- tory was the Northwest Conference Track Meet. We edged Bluffton, the defending champs for the past several years, by one point. We had it won, but Bluffton won the mile relay, pulling them to within one point of us. Playing against five schools, Grove almost dou- bled the points of their nearest competitor. The same thing happened at the five school Putnam Coun- ty Meet, where the Bulldogs brought home three trophies: 880 relay, mile relay, and Championship trophy. The JV Bulldogs won their only meet of the sea- son by defeating Bluffton 72-55. The Bulldogs were invited to the Ada lnvitationals for the first time this year. They won with Bluffton six points be- hind. The big meet was the District Track 81 Field Meet in which 24- schools participated. Grove walked away with the meet, outdistancing their nearest com- petitor, Van Buren, by nine points. At the Regional Meet, we qualified for seven events in the state meet. Greg Miller qualified in the 100 and 220 yard dashes. Bob Baxter qualified in the 180 high hurdles and the pole vault. Mike Nichols qualified in the high jump and 180 high hurdles. The 880 relay won their event, qualifying them also. The team members are: Greg Miller, Mike Snider, 1.2. 'W .
