Text from Pages 1 - 108 of the 1952 volume:

Dedication We proudly honor our championship football team of 1951-52 by dedicating this edition ot Col-Grove to these worthy athletes and their coaches. History was made when they brought this honor to themselves, their school, and community for the first time since the sport was inaugurated here. We will never forget this thrill-packed season particularly in the case of the crucial Forest and Shawnee games when the Grove came from behind in the last quarter to push over the necessary points for well earned victories. Their good sportsmanship. team play. and will to honorably win will ever stand as an example for all future Bulldog Elevens to emulate. The boys. and their coaches. Collins Stackhouse and Robert Diller, are much deserving of this dedicatory honor we hereby bestow upon them. ...1.. dai? In the five years Stack has been here each team he has coached improved on its record. This year his goal was reached as they won the Northwest Conference with a record of 8 wins, 1 tie and no losses. This is a great tribute to the school and to Coach Stackhouse because he has trained the boys to play good, hard. clean football. Grove's backiield was one of the smoothest working outfits of the league. due to his intensive training and drilling. Mr. Diller arrived here only this year but he showed his ability to coach the line because it was really solid. In the clutch the line held fast and stopped the opponents cold. Mr. Diller came here last year from Gilboa where he taught a few years. He is a graduate oi Defiance College where he attended after returning from the service. He is also an alumni ol this school having graduated in 1942. We all wish him the best of luck in hi sluture coaching career at Columbus Grove High School. Managers l l in . 1 at .Q ' y' me . K-. In trampling the college all-stars each player scored at least 7 points. Immediately after the game the class of '52 was rushed off to Marian's Motel in Ierry Macke's '57 firepower for a class get-together. As we enter the doors who do we see but Marian Gilbert. head proprietress. Guess who we saw next!! Phyllis Myers and Iim Verhoff sitting at the first table. Iim is quite a successful businessman. CConfidentially he's a carpenter and Phyllis is his office girl.j Sitting at their table are Maxine Meyer and Paul Henderson. Paul is a hardware salesman and Maxine is his personal secretary. Sashshaying through the door are Helen Iones and Merlin Sargent. He just graduated from the University of Michigan and is teaching and coaching at Milan. Michigan. Helen is keeping house for him and running a beauty parlor. Following them are Ann Vance and Iim McBride. Ann is a full-fledged nurse and Iim is a Iet fighter pilot ace with 25 planes to his credit. Seated around the large table in the center of the room are the unattached members of the class. First is lack Core. line coach for the Professionals and does some High School coaching on the side. Next is Dick Warnecke who is running the Full-O-Pep Experimental Farm and is doing quite well from latest reports. Dick Hoyt is also sitting at this table with a big cigar to celebrate his commission to manager of the Glandorf Tile Mill. At a table are Bill Bogart and Dick Rimer discussing the sugar-beet situation as they are executives of the Putnam County Sugar Beet Corporation. Seated with them is Ierry Macke reflecting the tomato juice shortage. At the next table are Glen Dukes and Nolan Dunlap comparing notes on their Ag. Classes. Right now they are arguing over which came first. the chicken or the egg. Margaret Palte and Rita Bogart both got special leaves from the Waves and Spars to be with us tonight. Vinnie Birkemeyer is still chasing all the women. We see he has one ccmered now so we won't bother him. Iackie Sarber. Eileen Smith. and Doris Bok just returned from a round the world trip and are planning to tell us some of their experiences later this evening. Here comes Sherlock Holmes complete with hat and false mustache. But everybody knows it's F.B.I. agent C. H. Mills who just exposed enemy agents stealing top secrets onthe new Supersonic Interplanetory Spacecruiser designed by Tom McAdams Corporation. Tom is an aeronautical designer as you may have guessed. Seated in a far corner dressed in white are the Florence Nightingales of the classeMaxine Diller and Patty Culp. Coming in from the back 40 is Adrian Birkemeier. He has gone into the Hybrid Seed Corn business. At a table near the back are Ronnie Everitt. Mud Goedde and lim Lamb discussing the latest in auto mechanics. These new cars pose quite a problem. That's why they hired Tom Cartwright as business manager. He's quite a whiz at the new streamlined jobs. Coming down the aisle next are the bcsses right arms in other words the secretaries of the class. We know them as: Eloise Barber, secretary to a Lawyer: Joyce Barto, Mr. Shook's office girl: Pat Doty. receptionist for Syl- vania. Inc.: Pat Haas. bookkeeper for Earl's Hardware: Mary Io Hitchcock. receptionist for Dr. Wheeze: Wilma Kohli. typist for the County Coroner: and Helen Ramsey, personal secretary for the Governor. A rush call is necessary to policeman lack Frost. and who should answer our call but telephone operator Ruth Hartman. She and lack will join us later. Coming in from a late class is Bob Gillespie. He's working on his masters degree in Physical Education. At the teachers' table we find Rose Leigh Mayberry and Iudy Stewart discussing their various crop of problem children. Seems as though the crop is as bad as ever. A new addition to the local school faculty is Ruby Watkins. She acts as Mr. Smith's receptionist while Kay Williams is clerk for the Board of Education. Coming in next from an important conference is State Representative Willis Wood. With him is his backer. Iunior Gerdeman. President of the First National Bank of Ohio. A look at our watch tells us it's time to leave. As we depart we notice the provider of the night's entertainment, Dick Roethlisberger and his Highlander Band. ' And so this class of '52 looks back upon its high school memories with a note of regret but with an added zest toward the future and another reunion. Schumacher Stone Co. And in the silent twilight hour Softly sighs, Forget me not. Thirty-six little boys and girls started in the first grade of our school in 1940. We were frightened. but soon lost our fear. Miss Grossman was our teacher. The names of these little boys and girls were: Ioyce Barto. Shirley Benroth, Patty Culp, Patsy Doty, Carol Ever- sole, Alice Howell, Mary Io Hitchcock, Edna Gail Kieran, Wilma Kohli, Elizabeth Krontz, Ruth Hartman, Rose Leigh Mayberry, Phyllis Myers, Helen Ramsey, Hulda Rogers, Iacquelyn Sarber, Ioyce Stoufer, Bill Bogart, Ronald Bogart, lack C. Core, lack L. Core. Marion Featheringill, Charles Frost, Robert Gillispie, Lester Busick, Paul Henderson, Dale Ienkins, Ion Iones, Tom McAdams. Warren Ridinger, Robert Risser, Dick Roethlisberger, Merlin Sargent. Robert Wilson, and Kay Williams. Because our class was so large w ewere divided. Those in the mixed class were: Ed Davis, Maxine Diller. Ruth Hartman. and Marian Bell. The same little boys and girls moved on to the second grade. We had Miss Ethel Brukham for our teacher. In this year we gained Ann Vance and lost Ioyce Stoufer. We were promoted to the third grade, and had Miss Kurtz for our teacher. She told us we were old enough now to do some studying for ourselves. We had some new boys and girls come into this grade. They were: David Elliott, Bob Epley. Walter Goedde. lim McBride, Eloise Barber. Iudy Stewart. and Marian Gilbert, and her sister Mildred Gilbert. We had Mrs. Helen Schaller as our fourth grade teacher. And, oh! How she made us divide. and multiply in our arithmetic class. We had six new students come into our class. They were: Norma Io Carmony, Eloise Martz, Nolan Dunlap, Bill Link and Ronald Everitt. Mrs. Florence Brooks, from Leipsic. was our fifth grade teacher. We really learned how to study geography in her room. Ruby Watkins was our only new student this year. . We went into the sixth grade. and Mrs. Mary Sheely was our teacher. It was in this grade we elected our first class officers, and had our first big class party at the school cafeteria. Our class gained some new classmates dur- ing this year. They were: Glen Dukes. lack Dunbar, lack Stout and Tom Cartwright. In this year also Marian Bell moved to Bluffton. ln the seventh grade we lost lack Dunbar as he was accidentally killed. In our Freshman year we acquired many new classmates. Those from Cairo were: Rita Bogart, Doris Bok, Iames Lamb, Pat Haas. Ir. Gerdeman, Urban Lauf. Charles Mills, Willis Woods, and Helen Iones. From St. An- thony's came: Adrian Birkemeier, Vincent Birkemeyer, Richard Hoyt, Francis Lammers, Ierome Macke, Iames Ver- hoff, Alvin Warnecke, Maxine Meyer, Margaret Palte and Eileen Smith. Time moves on! After many. many, forty-five minute periods of study, lecture, and recitations we realize we are Iuniors. Our class rings were beautiful. Our Iunior play, You Can't Take It With You, was a wonderful success. Mr. Dickson was the director and Mrs. Now was asst. director. Our Senior class play was a comedy Quiet Everybody. The director and assistant director were Miss McNary and Miss Brooks. The class of 1952 will long remember the different organizations we had the privilege to belong to: our chapel periods: our parties: our teachers: remember even the just being together for twelve years during our school life. So, our class of 1952 have started on a new and more difficult road of life: but memories of our C. G. school days will never be forgotten.
