HISTORY Ol' THE COLUMBUS GROVE SCHOOL The origin of the Columbus Grove School dates back to 1836, when a log school house was erected half a mile northeast of Columbus Grove, in which John Wamsley taught the first term of school. In 1842, the township was divided into two school districts. A part of Monroe township, Allen County and a part of Union township, Putnam County were annexed to this district. The western portion of the township was then given the distinction of district number two. A log school house was built in this district on land which later became a part of the Columbus Grove corporation. The first teacher in this new district was Rev. W. M. Cookin, a Presbyterian minister. It is said the first school building, in what is 'now the village of Columbus Grove, stood near the present residence of W. E. Pease. The second one, a frame structure, was erected on the same site as the first. When the B. 61 O. was built, the school building was purchased by the company, moved to their station grounds on West Sycamore Street, and used for a depot. The third school building, a two story frame structure, erected on the property formerly owned by Charles Merhab, was moved to the present Allen Kissel property where it served as a garage until about eighteen years ago, at which time it was razed to make room for a more modem private garage. The fourth school building was erected as a six room brick building on what is now the municipal park. This was later enlarged to a twelve room building, and in 1908, was tom down to partially provide material for the seventeen-room present public school. In 1923, eight-ninths of the Pleasant Township Rural School District became a part of the Columbus Grove Public School System. A part of the Mudbridge District, Union Town- ship, joined the Columbus Grove District at the same time, which totaled eight districts and part of the ninth in the special Grove District. Prior to this organization, high school pupils from this rural territory attended the High School as tuition pupils. In 1931, two and a part of the third of the adjoining Monroe Township, Allen County Rural School Districts became a part of the enlarged Columbus Grove District. After these additions were made, it became necessary to provide additional room and accommodations for the total student body of 625. In November 1931, a 875,000 bond issue was voted to erect an addition to the old brick building erected in 1908. This beautiful and accommodating modern addition provided additional facilities for the girls and boys of the district. Since there is still a need for more room, the bond issue amounting to 370,000 was voted in November 1949 to provide an addition, housing the vocational agriculture and music de- partments. This will be a valuable addition to the present school plan. These two departments have been accommodated where-ever there were available rooms, and we know that every- one will benefit by this addition. -5-
