SENIORS leave to remember . . . The bell has rung, the final class is over, and the locker doors have clanged shut for the last time. We stand momentarily on the steps and see CHS a little larger and just as beautiful as the day we entered in 1947. It was then with timid steps and backward glance we mounted the steps to enter the halls of CHS for the first time. As freshmen we came wide-eyed and curious. After initiation we hit our stride socially with the class picnic, a Christmas Party, and dances. Jim Nolan was chosen to lead us through our Standing: Bill Longshore, Vice President, Dave War- rick, President, Jerry Finnie, Boys' Athletic Chair- man, Bob Barnes, Boys' Social Chairman. sophomore year of activities, the picnic, and many dances. Our junior year brought with it vigorous sell- ing at the games, Honey in the Hive, Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y, and finally, the J unior-Senior Prom. This year we were Seniors, left with the leader- ship of the school. The clubs, activities, athletics -all depended for their success on ours. The revelry of class day, the dignity of baccalaureate unexpectedly impressed on us the implications of being a senior. And now we are graduates, remembering the past, looking forward to the future with CHS forever engraved upon our hearts. Important on the varsities, ranking high in the classroom, we took pride in our members who won awards. Our scholarship and our play, We Shook the Family Tree, branded us outstanding. After several months we had begun to feel pretty important and vital to CHS. Then, challenging tradition, on our own, we gave a Prom to honor the seniors. We enjoyed the confusion of graduation and caught some of the senti- ment of the year's last days. And then came the final sign of growing up- taking senior places at Class Day. Thus as Juniors we matured. Impatiently, we are awaiting our senior year when we can come into our own. I7 we Kgyaper rf. ' Juniors l W . ,, i . The SOPHS came-eager and willing We, as sophomores, elected Wilbur Beck to lead us through our second year at CHS as we began to face the greater and more serious problems of high school life as we approached our senior year. No field of extra curricular activity lacked participants from the Class of '53, Although well represented in athletics and all types of school organizations, we had our share of scholars. Overnight our second year was over. There had been a slow growth of assurance and unity and we looked forward together to the next notch on the ladder. 23 .we Cgliyoper Sophomores : ..., 1 B Y W , ' in ii' ffigfggigggfffiis iuf : -:fi ' , -- 'UK' Q ' ,P 5,15 fffgzzssfrx 'W' if . In the lirst game with Poland, the Clippers showed championship form in the first half and led 13 to 2. In the second half, Poland came back strong and edged the Clippers 21 to 13. The Clippers journeyed to Louisville for their second game and in the longest and roughest football game ever witnessed by Columbiana fans, the team was defeated by Louisville 57 to 0. The third game was at Minerva. Again for the first half, the Clippers played good ball but long passes by Minerva in the second half defeated the Clippers 25 to 0. D For their second home game the Clippers played Springfield. The team scored eight times with six backs and one end breaking into the scoring column. The Clippers defeated the Tigers 50 to 13. The next game was with a strong Leetonia team on a very wet and muddy field. The Clippers were beaten by Leetonia 28 to 0. In the game with the Sebring Trojans, four fumbles proved to be the Clippers' downfall and they were edged by Sebring 13 to 0. In the two games with the Tri-County co- champions, Boardman and Lisbon, the Clippers played good games but were defeated by Board- man 39 to 0 and by Lisbon 25 to 0. ' The last game of the season was with the East Palestine Bulldogs. The Clippers got off to a bad start, and although they played a good second half they were beaten by the Bulldogs 26 to 0. RESER VES Columbiana's future varsity material had a fairly successful season winning two games and losing two. The Reserves were defeated by Lowellville 7 to 0 and Lowellville 14 to 6. Although the Reserves did not win all their games, they gained experience that will prove 12 to 7 and by Poland 12 to 0. They beat Canfield valuable in years to come. With two more years to go he should become one of the best. ,ZW 1951 BRUCE MILLER Junior Center Bruce's great size and re- bounding ability helped the team many times. He also was a good scorer. With one year of varsity experience behind him he should be one of the mainstays of next year's team. K V ' RONN IE PERKINS Junior Forward Ronnie was a dead shot and liked to steal the ball from the opponents and put it in our basket. He was fast and aggres- sive against the opposing teams. He will be one of the best on next year's team. CHUCK RAMSEY Junior Forward Chuck's left handed push shot made him one of the teams lead- ing scorers. His expert foul shooting pulled the Clippers out of many tight squeezes. Chuck should be a spark plug on next year's team. -22.5 ia.. iii! ,Es T I ie 8,7 a s in is 7: :wit ,- 2 ,i,r Q f 125: g:'-2E:I:':-:I .Z' . 3 d T : 5 -1' ff lv'-' '-.' 11 ' Managers MICK POWERS Junior Guard Although leading the re- serve team to many victor- ies he still participated in many varsity games and contributed much to the team. Mick should prove a mainstay on next yearls varsity. DICK THOMAS Junior Guard Dick, being a reserve starter gained experience that will prove valuable next year. His all around floor work made him an asset to the team. His lively nature kept up the team,s morale. JACK STEPHENS Junior Guard Jack was a very fast and aggressive little player. Al- though the smallest member of the team, size was made up in pep. His lightning fast passes were responsible for many reserve scores. Jack will be back next year. t i e Art GARY SAYERS Junior Center- Gary's height was a great asset to the reserve team. When called upon he proved himself capable of playing varsity ball. Gary will be very valuable to next year's squad. 43 Z0 Basketball In November approximately thirty eager candidates answered the call for basketball practice. The prospects didnit look too bright because all five of last year's starters had grad- uated, however, six lettermen were back from last year's squad. Coach Hall put together a team and they fin- ished the season with a record of 10 wins and 9 losses, which is a fairly successful season. The high scorers were Bruce Miller, Bob Barnes, and Ronnie Perkins with 170, 151, and 140 points respectively. John Laughlin had 129, Chuck tutes followed with Dave Warrick getting 19, Mick Powers 16, Bill Longshore 10, Dick Thomas and Gary Sayers 6 apiece. The Clippers improved toward the end of the season and they should go a long way in the tournaments if they play the kind of basketball that they are capable of playing. The Reserve team had a very good season winning 15 and losing 4. They scored 862 points to the opponents 574. The members of this Re- serve team should form an important part of next year's varsity. It seems the tougher the game, the louder they cheered. Due to their efforts, our cheering section improved greatly. We are sorry to lose Jo Harding who has been leading cheers for three years. The JUNIOR HIGH came-wide-eyed, curious. And will We ever forget that first Week-when we wonderingly took in everything and learned to find our Way around in halls filled with friend- ly faces. We were introduced to the assemblies, chose class officers, support- ed the Junior High athletic teams, learned it was useless to complain about homework, to cram the period before a test, and to call everyone a character . We poured over old yearbooks and gradually got to know the school. We Went to the games and cheered and sang the loudest, we envied and ad- mired the lofty seniors from afar. With our activities, elections, and parties came the pleasure of belong- ing. 49 we Eighth Grade fa.: fi V A ni 5'1 ga? if aa A: . gf? KH?
