In the library, you will see encyclopedias, dictionaries, at- lases, reference books, fiction and non-fiction as well as a selection of magazines which are added from time to time. The college catalogue reference is on file in the office this year and they were very helpful to everyone who is planning to go to college. The thanks go to Mr. Wheeler for his untiring efforts and guidance. The marching band profited greatly from marching at the Columbiana County F air, at Lisbon, then at the marching contest at Salem, and finally marching at all the football games. The orchestra did a fine job at the plays, assemblies, rallies, and whenever called upon. This year, due to the remodeling of the school, the Spring Concert will be held, weather per- mitting, at Firestone Park on or about May 13. A county orchestra and band is in the mak- ing and will total 125 of the best talent in the county. A chorus of 200 voices is to be added from the county. The entire group is to put on a pageant at the park in the spring. School Cafeteria One of the absolutely indispensable activities going on at our school at noon is eating. Setting: A living room of a deserted old mansion somewhere down South. The Story: William Harrison, the last of an old Southern family, who has been going to college in the East, comes South to take possession of a spooky old mansion around which many weird tales are woven. His great-grandfather, the leader of the Ku Klux Klan following the Junior The luniors presented their play The Eyes of Tlaloc in the high school auditorium on November 19 at 8:00. This three-act mystery was directed by Mrs. lean Snow. Mr. Wheeler and the orchestra supplied them with music: Mr. Roth gave them help with their scenery, and Smith's permitted them to use their furniture. The action of the play takes place in the living room of the house on the Rancho de los Ala- mitos, near the Mexican border in Southern Arizona. The story concerns the solving of a mystery. 'ru , S.. According to the superstition a fiery red cross appears at night to warn a new heir of impending doom. Then a ghostly proces- sion of white-robed figures apparently steal through the woods, bathed in a supernatural green light. William scoffs at the superstition and invites his sweetheart, her mother, and her sister over to help hunt for the buried treasure. Pla y Amanda Simkins .,...... Ezra Simkins ............ Membership is open to all Iunior and Senior girls. This year the Y-Teen calendar was full of parties, speeches, dinners, and many other things which provided an interesting, versatile program. The program for the year began with a formal installation service to which we invited our mothers and friends, and following the service, Mrs. Bailey of Salem gave a demonstration of plastic materials and their uses. The annual Hi-Y and Y-Teen Banquet was held this year in the Methodist Church and was very much enjoyed. Both roller and ice skating parties were held which furnished a lot of good fun and a lot of laughter at both our own and the others expense. Some people aren't so poised when they're in a heap on the floor or ice, as they are on their feet! Shortly before Christmas, Mrs. Stanfield of Youngstown presented a very interesting demonstration on gift wrapping: She contributed much in making the gifts received from the Y-Teen members more cleverly wrapped than before. The Y-Teens held their Christmas dinner at the Guilford Grange hall December 20. We left there full of good food and Christmas cheer. These are but a few of the many times we spent together this past year. We had a dem- onstration on ceramics and jewelry, jitney sales, another Sweetheart Dance, a Mother's Tea, a Farewell Party, and many more good times. The cabinet is pictured below. The club, which was first organized in Columbiana in l929, was known as Girl Reserves. The name was changed to Y-Teens in June 1946 by the National Board oi the Young Women's Christian Association. The Y-Teens, together with all other members of the Y. W. C. A., share a common purpose. To build a fellow- ship oi women and girls devoted to the task of realizing in our common life, those ideals of personal and social living to which we are committed by our faith as Christians. In this endeavor, we seek to understand Iesus, to share His love for all people and to grow in the knowledge and love of God . The new Y-Teen symbol, combining the world- wide blue triangle with an elongated globe was chosen to symbolize the fact that Y-Teen groups are part of a world- wide organization. Our activities for the year included selling football pro- grams at home games, Iitney Sales of home-made cake and Yr Y -Teens candy, Spaghetti Supper, Theater Party ln Salem, Christmas Party and Gift Exchange, Special Speaker, Song Fests, Hobo Nite, Valentine Party, Lenten Service, Mother's Night. and Formal Installation. Important days were those on which we received our sweaters, pins and insignias. Special ieatures this year included Secret Pals and Pen Pals. Our meetings were held twice each month. Attendance, scholar- ship, and character were emphasized as our duty 'and responsibility as good Y-Teens. Below are pictured the lollowing club oificersz President ........................... My two assistants, Ethel Anglemyer and Virginia Van Fossan, helped me, Virginia Brown, assemble and type the news, while our classmates did all the reporting. As the year wore on I found out what a big job I had gotten myself into, but the more l worked, the more interesting editing became. I hope we have all done a satisfactory iob in presenting to you the school news week by Week. ' I Columbiana Library The Columbiana Library is a thoroughly modern library of 12,000 volumes, under the able direction of Mrs. Weaver cmd Mrs. Felger. It seems an inseparable part of our school, being next door and being used so much by students. All of us appreciate the helpfulness and courtesy shown us by Mrs. Weaver and Mrs. Felger, who are pictured at the left. IAQ ,Qi-elf i' 44.44, 1-. at-fx The Clipper squad this year was a light and inexperi- enced one, but they were constantly fighting to break into the win column. Starting his second year as coach of the Clippers, Coach jack Cramb was faced with the difficult task of moulding a potent football squad out of a meager supply of material. Starting out the season with Poland, the Clippers were a victim of bad breaks losing after a hard fight 12-O. The next Tri-County tilt was with Minerva's veteran eleven. We came out on the short end, l9-D. Our second home game was with Canfield, who took advantage of every break to top us, 25-0. The following week we played our best game of the Football 1948-1949 season against the Leetonia Bears. This ended in a dis- appointing loss of 14-7. Boardman was our next rival We went down before their tricky T by a score of 27-0. Sebring's big, rough Trojans came to the Firestone Park on the following week and took home a 26-7 victory. Next on the schedule we played the Lisbon Blue Devils. Lisbon lived up to their reputation as one of the tougher teams in the country, as they romped to win 39-6. We finished the season with our arch rival East Palestine. Although we had high hopes of defeating the Bull Dogs, it just wasn't in the books for us to win. T rack The Track outlook for the 1948-49 season looks better than that of the last few years with eleven lettermen back. Last year's team competed in the Mansfield Relays, Ohio Relays, Poland Relays, County Meet, District Wesleyan Meet, and three dual meets with Poland, Springfield, and Boardman. Captain mile run and finished 16th in a field of 37, tying the C. H. S. record of 4 minutes 52 seconds. The group is under the supervision of Henry Wining and Gary Sayers. The members are selected mostly from vol- unteers from the seventh and eighth grades. The members help the grade school children cross the dangerous crossings, in the morning, at the noon hourg and after school in the after- noon. They perform this duty willingly through- out the year, in all kinds of weather. They have charge of the kindergarten at noon and evening. This group is the guest of the Columbiana Rotary and the Cleveland Indians at a baseball game in Cleveland in the spring. Junior High Cheerleaders There are three Iunior High Cheerleaders this year, Rachel Esterly, Barbara Biery, and Shirley Wells.
