Klan, Jfuxto In the fall of 1936 there dropped from the clouds a large plane chrtstened The Class of 1940 Clxpper carry1ng flfty four passengers a class proud to land at the portals of the new world or C H S Our f1rst stop was at the alrport of Freshman C1ty On our tr1p thru thxs c1ty we were gulded by our sponsor Mr Barton Feelmg the need for leadersh1p we elected the followmg off1cers pres1dent B111 Dewalt V1CepI'9S1ClG1'1l Glen Eckert secretary and treasurer Iames Burkle and socral cha1rrnan Vllda Buchner Our soclal events dur1ng our stay ln Freshman C1ty cons1sted of a w1ener roast and a party Dur1ng our stay our c1ty part1c1pated 1n the lead1ng sports such as football track and basketball After a very emoyable stay we left for new adventures ln Sophomore C1ty We found upon landlng 1n Sophomore C1ty that we were becomlng more acquatnted w1th Clly we were under the superv1s1on of M1ss Starr and M1ss Funkhouser We elected the fol low1ng offlcers pres1dent Iohn Barrow v1ce pres1dent Iohn Poulton secretary treasurer Iames Burkle athletxc cha1rmen Glen Eckert and Frances Newell One of the greatest tr1 umphs dunng our V1Sll was 1n tylng Wllh the Senxors IH scholarshlp Here we entered 1nto dtfferent GCUVIUGS such as Glee Club H1 Y G1r1 Reserves and class basketball Our soclal events conslsted of a w1ener roast and a party wh1ch everyone emoyed The next stop of our fhght was Iunlor C1ty wh1ch we all had a great deslre to explore Our dest1nat1on reached we had as our sponsors M1ss Starr and M1ss Mart1n Our offlcers 1n the new c1ty were pres1dent Iames Burkle v1ce- presldent Lourse Buhecker secretary treasurer Glen Eckert socxal chalrman Munel M1ller, Page Twenty athletlc cha1rmen Grace F1sher and B111 De- walt Our annual w1ener roast was held early 1n September Three lmportant events took place dunng our stay here They were the purchase of the Iumor nngs the class play Growmg Pa1ns under the d1rect1on of M1ss Starr and M1ss Mart1n and the Star Dust Prom glven IH honor of the Semors on Fnday May 12 After spendmg a very pleasant year as res1dents we were ready to move on to the last stop of our Joumey Sen1or C1tyl After a very emoyable tnp we reached Sen1or C1ty and d1d we feel proud' Our long-awalted dest1nat1on had been reached Our gulde and helper rn Sen1or C1ty was M1ss Esterly The new c1ty must have offlcers so we elected the follow1ng pres1dent Iarnes Burkle v1ce pres1 dent Fred W1lson secretary Dawn Stacey treasurer Barbara Robxnson socmal chalrman Bryarly and Fred Kldder Whlle ln Sen1or C1ty we were confronted wrth several tasks wh1ch we d1d cheerfully and eagerly They were pub l1sh1ng the school newspaper The Beacon and the annual The Torch wh1ch you are now readmg We proudly attended the prom given by the Iumors 1n our honor Our school events for the year cons1sted of a Leap Year Dance and our annual w1ener roast In the sprmg of 1940 a Semor play Next Door Nelgh bors was presented under the d1rect1on of MISS Esterly We the class of 1940 f1nd that we have come to the end of our dellghtful Joumey We must sepa rate now and explore new worlds alone and un alded We regret to say we can no longer lrnger 1n th1s well loved place The memory of the kxnd guldance and happy tlmes we have re- celved 1n th1s world of C H S w1ll always remaxn rn our mmds O - ll ' ' I II I I I I I l I . .
