a i ,, ,A 3 - ,l . STTHE - COLVMBIAN . and at the Metropolitan and the Church clubs he was well known. But the Columbia University Club welcomed him most of all as peculiarly its own. President of it through all its existence its circle gathered him in from the start, has rallied round him on its home nights, has dedicated its new house under his presiding presence, and has made him a perpetual member of its Olympus of household gods. In scientific work, Professor Van Amringe has edited a long series of mathematical works to which is attached the name of Charles Davies, his predecessor in the chair at Columbia. Many a schoolboy first became familiar with the name of H. Van Amringe through the medium of Davies l..egendre. But the American Mathematical Society has also claimed allegiance and the New York Mathematical Society largely owes to him its inception. He was president of it in its early days. Among his students Professor Van Amringe has found his best and most devoted friends. It would be difficult to fittingly express the affection which he has inspired. His erect carriage and mar- tial air fthe expression is now a part of Columbia folklorej roused involuntary cheers' whenever he appeared on state occasions. Commencement banquets would not have been the same had not his familiar figure sat at the head of the head-table. I-le has been celebrated in song. No college ditty br' 's more enthusiastic response than the one whose School of Mines version has the stanza: Professor Van Am has tugged at an oar ln the Faculty boat, since about '64, And we hope for at least a full century more He will hit up the stroke every morningn and in which the College version closes with this universally felt sentiment: For we love Van Am with our heart and soul, And we'll drink to his health, let us finish the bowl, For we'll stand by Van Am through fair and through foul, And wish him the top of the morning. E:-'.gQ:.5:-' whose record it is to be. - SL- ' JZ! 'E ' Two years ago you all came here with trembling steps and timid hearts as humble Freshman. You wrestled with the Class of l9l I with great success and disclosed your strength. Then you were gladly recognized and you began to take y-our places in the fraternities and in the clubs and on the teams. Moreover, you were recognized in the class rooms by your various instructors as most worthy successors ol the one hundred and fifty classes or more that have gone out from Columbia. My special interest in the Class of 1912 lies in the fact that so many of you belong to me. You are my boys, my old students and you will belong to me as long as l live, and wherever we may be. We have been associated for the past year, or the past two years. We have met day after day and we have considered together many of the most important subjects that are related to our lives, our existence on the earth, and our well-being. - But after all, we were very much limited in time, and l can only hope that the glimpses you gained of the great and important subjects which we studied together have created a desire for a greater and deeper knowledge, and that you will continue to pursue as far as possible the studies which we began together. Now that I have retired from active duty in the University, it is a comfort and gives me the great- est happiness to know that the members of the Class 1912 desire to include me in their COLUMBIAN. l shall be proud to be thereg and I assure the class of my continued affection.
