This was Columbia’s tenth successive year remaining undefeated and over this past decade, Columbia has accumulated an unbeliev- able total of 202 straight victories. Coach Eugene Chyzowych led this Cougar squad to defeat the powerful Elizabeth team for the title of Metro League Champs. Starting players of the varsity A team included co-captains Larissa Moiseenko, and Julie Rup- precht, Susan Bishop, Amy Wolgemuth, Jean Doyle, Jessica Wolff, and Wilhanitra Lee. Other members of the varsity squad included Isabel Sanchez, Aileen Dolan, Tami Men- cinsky, Tina Fosella, Julie Kinney, Karen Lipnicki, Wendy Farnam, Brynn O’Neil, Kara Lakeland, Amy Cohen, Sara Jurczak, and Kathy Bissenger. However, in this case, with only one senior in the starting line-up, and with five of the seven starters being freshmen or sophomores, it was indeed a year to build for the boys’ varsity tennis team. Fortu- nately, even with this young squad, the team had a winning record anyway — and an impressive one at that. They battled Seton Hall, the conference champs, down to the wire, twice. Qualifying for the “states,” they were defeated by Montclair, but only barely. With an overall record of 11-11, led by Nelson Eu- banks, Adam Titelbaum, and Craig Gibian at singles, and doubles combinations of Billy Brody and James Wilkes, and Walt Michels and Jeff Safin, they did Co- lumbia proud. The most outstanding record (12-5) was compiled by Billy and James, who also defeated the Essex County first doubles champs, Montclair, in the states. Nelson Eubanks
