New Jersey At first the road stretches interminably, confused, over- whelmed, filled with questions. But rapidly the vision is replaced by special mo- ments shared by laughs and smiles of friends. Each moment is unique to each of us because we are all different and have different paths mapped to follow. 2 3 We enjoy certain times and not others. But that is to be expected. What is your game is not mine. What is my destination is, perhaps not yours. 4 5 6 Our independence is important —fun but difficult. 7 8 9 10 11 12 We are performers who love attention as well as an audience that enjoys watching others per- form. 13 But alone or together, laughing or crying, leading a path or following another, we know we have travelled through unforgettable times. 15 And now we look from the line of memories toward the line stretched be- fore us. 16 17 faculty ! j 1 j j 261 ADVERTISEMENTS J 17 Dr. William Librera Principal Stuart Benjamin House Director (10, 11, 12) George Goetz House Director (10, 11, 12) Thomas Jacobsen House Director (9) 18 Arlene Burns (On Leave) Peter Cross Dorothy Dharni Arlene Farley Betty Forgerson Donald Griesel Andrew Kooistra Marion Murrill George Plishka Hal Young Guidance Counselors 19 Thomas Alose Industrial Arts Ellen Asselmeyer Child Study Team Patrick Attanasio History Barbara Barbaro Special Education Joan Barist History George Binder Mathematics Ruth Austin Mathematics Gail Blazure Home Economics Frederick Booth Physical Education Donna Box English Daniel Broadhead Physical Education L. Coach Robert Curcio recorded his 100th victory as coach of the Cougars and was named New Jersey High School Coach of the Year. Bruce Aukamp 159 LACROSSE Last year Columbia established both a girls' Varsity and junior Varsity Lacrosse Team. Melinda Gardner, the sole coach of both, taught the girls the necessary fundamentals of Lacrosse. With the help of Co-Captains Beth Breen and Lisa DeCicco, the girls were off to a fine start. The team members worked aptly to pick up the new skill whereby Miss Gardner was pleased with the team's promising potential. Although the team's record was not reflective of their true ability, the girls demonstrated good sportsmanship and a keen grasp of the sport. They're looking forward to another exciting season. Due to a revision of rules, the Cougars were unable to win the State Champion- ships. They did, however, win the Essex County Tournament. The highlight of their season came when they were invited to attend the National AAU Junior Olympics in Benedictine, Illinois, where they finished with a respectable ninth place. The team was paced by Senior Jennifer Hartung, Juniors Karen Reitzel and Me- lanie Panko, all of whom were selected to the new Jersey All-State team. The club, whose purpose is to heighten the awareness of Italian culture, does so through meetings, parties, and trips to places such as Ellis island (to trace the steps of their Italian ancestors). The club also renewed its ri- valry with the Spanish Club in their annual vol- leyball game, which the Italians unfortunately lost. CERCLE FRANQAIS: VOYAGE A PARIS From April 15 to April 23 a group of stu- dents and adults travelled to France for an exciting visit. The trip was organized and led by French teacher Mrs. Krasner and was chaperoned by her, Mr. Krasner, and Mrs. Press. Eighteen CHS students and eight other adults participated in the trip. The group stayed in a Paris hotel, taking their meals both in the hotel and in various restaurants. They took a guided tour of Paris and made side trips to the magnificent palace of Ver- sailles, the town of Tour de Chartre, the Loire Valley, and a French high school. The visitors also enjoyed learning the art of French cui- sine in a cooking class. In Paris they had free time and a fascinating array of opportunities to explore: the Metro (the Paris subway), French films and plays, museums, Paris shopping, walking through the city and its parks, tasting specialties, and, of course, practicing their French! Contests generally range in type from the bi-monthly thirty-minute tests, which are taken before school, to all-day affairs. AHSME (previous- ly called the MAA) is the most highly at- tended contest, taken this year by more than two hundred Columbia students. In addition to dragging themselves out of bed for the morning contests, Math Team members faithfully report to the frequent problem- solving sessions which are supervised by Miss Mary Dell Morrison, the Math Team sponsor. Awards are presented at the end of the school year to those individuals who have performed well. Special recognition is due to this year's freshman team, (sponsored by Mr. Roy Eis- mann) who currently holds second place na- tionally in the Continental Math League. 185 UNICYCLE CLUB BIO LEAGUE Open to first year biology students, Co- lumbia's Biology League gives enthusiastic science students a chance to test their knowl- edge against each other schools in interscho- lastic meets sponsored by the New Jersey Sci- ence League. Through bake sales, dances, and other fund- raising activities, money is raised to form programs designed to bring about an aware- ness of the achievements black citizens have contributed to society, particularly during the period of Black History Month. Through the efforts of its members, it is expected that the Black Student Union should become a driving force in the Columbian environment and also in the communities of South Orange and Maplewood. It has been a dedicated effort by a small few that produced The Columbian this year. They changed the format from last year's news magazine to try to include a wider variety of news and feature copy. With each issue, the physical appearance of the paper is continually being improved. Their strength this year has been the high quality of the writing as well as the numbers of different writers who have submitted articles. Stories are written by numerous enthusiastic students, including members of the journalism classes. As one of the only school newspapers to be produced entirely within the school, predominantly by students, The Columbian is unique, but it faces the additional challeges of not only working on the editorial facets of a paper, but working in graphic arts as well, setting type, doing layout, making a pasteup. After pasteup is com- pleted, graphic arts students and Mr. Vodofsky shoot the pages and make photographic plates of them and then print them. Working on The Columbian provides a broad experience by enabling students to participate in the many aspects of producing a newspaper. Referred to as Columbia's underground activist news- paper, the Spark has been in existence for 14 years. The newspaper gives the students a chance to express their views and opinions dealing with school and world affairs. Since the administration does not support the Spark financially, they have total control over the content and article selections. Noth- ing is edited or censored. Not only is Valhalla concerned with the problems of today, but with the crises and conflicts ahead. Valhalla firmly believes in sharing ideas to arouse thought and provide awareness about the world we live in. Members are also frequently contributors themselves. Many C.H.S. writers and artists who con- tribute to Guildscript also enter state and national contests and have won awards at both levels. The team covers all grade levels and next year's team promises to be just as strong. In addition to being some of the finest High School chess players in the state, the team found diversion in learning selective Russian words, such as bughouse , from the players of Slavic descent that frequent the club. The team, with a wealth of players from different backgrounds and cultures, considers itself a family. Our matches take place approximately three times per month. This tournament, shown on Suburban Cablevision Tuesday nights, includes 38 high schools in the area. Mrs. Press, the team's advisor, offered a test to anyone interested in participating and chose the four highest scoring students to be on the team. The four members are rotated in at each match, where two teams participate at a time. The series of matches make up a tournament where one team challenges an- other. At the end of the season, the two high- est scoring teams compete for the champion- ship. Our team is sponsored by Barnes and No- ble Bookstore in West Orange. Upon receipt of donations from them, Mrs. Press donates the money to the CHS library. Novices are invited to join experts in the game which demands knowledge of the intricate rules, fantasy litera- ture, medieval rituals, and group dynamics. Of course, imagination, aggression, and insanity are involved! Invented in 1978, the game has come a long way. More and more schools are offering this club as an extracurricular activity. The game was ori- ginally invented as just a game to play in spare time, but has recently become, to some people, an addiction. One game, or campaign, involves the ficti- tious, hazardous journey of the players to a dun- geon where they will find treasure and powers. The length of the game depends upon the chal- lenge of the perils and monsters the dungeon mas- ter creates and the ability of the players to sur- vive. Constantly the players must discuss how to overcome the obstacles which the dungeon master (D.M., John Dilley in our school's club) has planned. Those who survive the campaign share the contents of the dungeon and progress to a higher level of power in the next campaign. The club meets twice weekly in Mrs. Hill's room to plan the location and time for play at members' convenience. Their services are a truly valuable contribution to the library pro- gram. SPECIAL SERVICES The Special Services Club is a club that helps at school functions. Last spring, over 3,000 dollars were raised in order to buy a new telescope. The club has used this telescope and others during numerous observations, both during the day and at night. Our recent activities have in- cluded viewing two lunor eclipses and being disappointed on many occasions when the weather did not cooperate with our plans. This was the fault of our sponsor, Alan Levin, who has consistently caused extremely cloudy nights on our observations. The club has also had many overnight trips to remote observing sites, in an attempt to escape the light pollution of Maplewood. As a result of these accomplishments, the Astronomy Club was featured in an article in the New York Times in December. For most of the year, this group of students has seated the entire student body and planned every assembly without a facul- ty advisor. Led by chairman Paul Lehrman, this committee has taken upon itself to serve the student body. Under the leadership of Charles Coleman, School Coun- cil President, many activities were imple- mented to fulfill these goals. With the elimination of houses a revision of the constitution was conducted. Council also sponsored exchanges with other councils and conducted workshops to get new ideas for student government. Council members also attended Board of Education and Board of School Estimate meetings to express student sentiments. Meetings were also held with the BOE to discuss the possibility of a student serving as a BOE member. Council, through the town governments, had students appointed to lo- cal boards and sponsored an exchange with the administration, courts, and public service departments of the communities. A football pep-rally, two spirit weeks, and Teacher Appreciation Day were the main ac- tivities Council sponsored to increase school spirit. Council also worked on a course evalu- ation, student booklet, school folder, and the student center. A lot of hard work from a lot of very concerned people made this year profitable. This year the Senior Class Council, under our advisor Mr. Cooperman, has been ex- tremely busy in preparing for the annual year-end events. We were also, however, in- volved in fundraisers and all-school events. For the first time in Columbia High School history the Senior Class Council has been and still is an actual functional council and not simply a year-long prom committee. Numer- ous events, like the talent show, formal dance, flea market, marathon, and many others, were carried out successfully by the active participation of all council members. Other projects such as the computer dating service, candy-grams, and weekly bake sales, were also initiated by the Senior Class Coun- cil. Our class president, Steve Carridi, be- came known for his Carridi committees , created for virtually every apparent conflict, grievance, and idea presented to the council. JUNIOR CLASS COUNCIL This year the Junior Class Council has worked very hard and has had a terrific out come. We have raised more money than any other Junior Class. We have had many suc- cessful events and other excellent fund- raisers. SOPHOMORE CLASS COUNCIL This year the Sophomore Council has been very active under the leadership of Anna Verdi, President; Joann Savino, Vice-Presi- dent; Jennifer Manning, Secretary; and Jen- nifer Dimpell, Treasurer. We have nineteen people on the council, one person from every sophomore homeroom. We started out the year with a band night in December. As the year progressed we held numerous bake sales and occasional bagel sales in the morning. This year the sophomore council sponsored an event which we hope will become a tradi- tion and improve interaction between the schools in this area. A dinner was held for all the members of the student councils of the schools belonging to the Iron Hills Confer- ence. All in all, the Sophomore Council has had a successful year and all members had fun being part of the government of Columbia. Front Row (I to r): Jeff Davis, Steve Gomer, Dan Glasser, Ada Basilone, Jen Manning, Anna Verdi, Jen Dimpel, Erica Cohn, Russell Kaplan, Debbie Wilson, Back Row: Mr. Palma, Claudia Tichy, Lisa Jennis, Cathy Huang, Jaimie Field, Joann Savino, Jason Canon, Livia Tumin. FRESHMAN CLASS COUNCIL Due to the change in Columbia's school system from houses to grade divisions, the freshman class had to adapt itself to a new school and school system. The freshmen stu- dent council accomplished much over the past year, arousing freshmen school spirit and enhancing freshmen involvement in Co- lumbia High School. During Spirit Week the freshmen student council was proud that a freshmen homeroom won. Besides this, the freshmen student council sponsored an event, Columbia's Horror Picture Show , in December. Through freshmen homeroom re- presentatives, student council has been able to keep the lines of communication open, thereby increasing freshmen participation in all school events. Although losing the experience and power of graduating seniors Greg Bonin, Eric Berger, Roger Crandall, and Mike Rothberg, next year's team, led by team captain Danny Glasser, has harnessed the talents of many underclass students and looks forward to a successful year. The 96 band members and this year's Drum Major, Steven Blinder, marched at all but one of the Varsity Football Games, under the best and worst of conditions. Joining them on the field were the Colorguard and the Twirl- ers. There is more than just football, however, that makes these students perform. The Marching Band and the Colorguard and Twirlers also marched in Maplewood's Memorial Day Parade, a tradition for the students that has been around for years. It shows that we are good and we can do it, and next year we'll be even better, even though we are losing many fine people. 1 greatly appreciate what everyone did, especially the Seniors who were not starting; they knew that they wouldn't have much chance to play, but they stuck to it, and were out there every day. While many people will debate this point, cheerleaders, advisors, and coaches regard it as a fact. It is not a game, nor is there a winner or loser after the contest. However, like any other sport it requires dedication, spirit, and a lot of practice. Columbia cheerleaders are no exception. This year, much time and effort were put into football, basket- ball, and wrestling cheerleading. Many new cheers were heard, some created by squad members and oth- ers brought back from cheerleading camp. Although there were new additions, many traditional cheers were retained. Mark J. Downey November 14, 1960 — December 12, 1982 Prayer “I am the resurrection and the life, ’’says the Lord. “The man who believes in me will live even if he dies, and every living person who puts his faith in me will never suffer eternal death.” We commend our servant to you, Lord. Now that this servant has passed from this life, may this servant live on in your presence. In your mercy and love, forgive whatever sins may have been committed through human weakness. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Nobody Knows I may get around ... I may laugh a lot... Now you’d think that I’d be happy with the life I got ... Nobody knows ... nobody sees ... Ain’t nobody really knows the inner side of me ... I may seem secure ... I could have it made ... You might think you see a lucky man who made the grade ... Nobody knows what dreams I see ... Ain’t nobody really sure just who they wanna’ be ... But everybody has a place and time ... A chance to live ... a need to find ... We all got something that we care about ... I propose you find it out ... It’s not in a book ... or a magazine ... Or the stars who guide our fortunes on the silver screen ... Nobody knows ... it’s up to me ... Ain’t nobody who can say it like it ought to be ... I see my future at the rainbow’s end ... happy hours ... timeless friends ... And if I ever chance to find my way ... rest assured ... I will stay ... You may see your life as a compromise ... You may live to find the promise dancin’ in your eyes ... Nobody knows ... it’s meant to be ... Let the magic of the moment say it all to me. — Billy Squire Love, Vinny, Jim, Butch, Al, Coach Dan Brodhead CONGRATULATIONS BRIAN AND THE CLASS OF 1983 THE McENROE FAMILY CONGRATULATIONS JACKIE AND THE CLASS OF ’83 WE LOVE YOU, MOM, DAD, JENNIE, DAN, AND COUGAR TO MY BIG SISTER THANKS FOR ALWAYS BEING THERE!!!
