Your pilot is jet ace, Francis Drake, and his co-pilot is the celebrated woman aviator, Liz Haug. The Cougard was designed by Drs. Mike Ledeen and Steve Put- nam, eminent masters of the science of Space. In case of emergency, however, all passengers have been equipped with pressurized space suits, de- signed by science illustrator Lois Barrelli. All cigarettes out please—WE ARE BLASTING OFF! Navigator George Wellington tells me that the Cougard is now 500,000 miles from earth, and that we will reach Venus in a matter of hours. Once there, we will embark upon the greatest mission ever undertaken by our government. Most of you on board are strangers to one another, and I have been asked by our game director, Mike Marcus, to urge you to socialize and participate in all activities possible during the trip, in order to keep up our morale. The coordinators of our trip to Venus are Linda and George Barbarosh, who will be mingling with you, should you have any last minute questions. Linguists Nancy Harris and Barbara Levine are our official communicators; they will be glad to supply you with a copy of Venish made Easy, upon request. Dr. Thomas Baum, in- ventor of the first outer space refueling station, is available below the mezzanine for those inter- ested in the scientific aspects of our trip. Other morale builders, including Bill Salisbury and Alice Goodman, are in the lounge, two flights down, ready to entertain. A fashion show for the women and all interested men will be held in 15 minutes. The show promises to be a good one. Models Marilyn Manson, Sherri Maurer, Susan Genser and Joan Button will doff their space suits for the latest in styles a la Venus, designed by Nancy Heller. The magazine and newspaper shop downstairs is open for business. It has in stock a fine collec- tion of best-sellers, including Jon Sutcliffe’s famous science fiction work, Creature from the Crater, and Ed Hirsch’s collection of Short Stories, entitled Smarty.” Restaurant receptionist Betsy King has just sent word that dinner will be served in a half hour. Head waiter Carmen Nicosia has assured me that the menu includes food for every taste. The chef of the Cougard is David Curtis, who specializes in German dishes. Our trip to Venus is the first in a series of in- terplanetary jaunts planned by our government. President Howard Bruschi hopes that these good- will missions will increase our prestige at home and in outer space. We are an unarmed passenger ship; however, there are two marines in the hold, Bob Dubois and Bill Campbell, who are ready to take on any belligerent Venusians single handed. As an additional safety measure, The Petrozello Destroyer, a fully-armed war rocket, may be dis- patched at a moment’s notice from Earth should trouble occur. I am sure all of you would like to know more about Venus, its people and its culture. Explorer Jim McAlister, first man to land on the moon, has visited Venus before. He and his cohorts, Chris Brenner and Dick Grover, well known hunters, will be available after the fashion show, with slides of their trip. After this lecture, artists Sandy Or- lovsky and Alice Pfeiffer will show their interpre- tations of the average Venus man. Athletes Lynn Fader, Stuart Tauber, Bill Snoiv and John Williams under the leadership of their coach Norman Ham- mer, will be in the gymnasium to demonstrate the national sport. Notice to all airsick passengers! The infirmary is located on the main level next door to the coffee shop. Drs. Dick Adelman and Mary Rankin are on duty at all times, assisted by nurses Sandy Masi, Anne Tiedeman, and Janet Swift. For those in better health, a concert will be held shortly in the auditorium, starring Art Bartner, Seth Vianet, Art Lerner, and Bob Danish. Later in the evening, dancers Marily MacKinnon, Bonnie Kurnos, Naomi Steinlight and Marcia Dyckman will entertain, as will singers Cynthia Sherman and Dot Rydgren. For those of you who wish to become better acquainted with the Cougard, guide Don Turek is available for a tour. He will direct you to the ob- servation platform where you will see stars, planets, and several other universes. Denny Blagden, his- torian extraordinaire, will lecture on the back- grounds of the various constellations. Publisher of Gruesome, foremost Mad magazine, Henry Goldberg, will be on hand to distribute copies of the latest issue. Attention everyone, Venus is in sight! I see photographer Richard Miller snapping pictures of this truly splendid sight. Chuck Voight is already at the door, hoping to find a Venus of his own. We will not land for a few minutes yet, but great excitement reigns in the Cougard. Playwright Nan West has halted rehearsal for her latest play starring Mike Brandman and Myra Silver, which will have its premiere tonight on Venus. Magician Ed Feder has mistakenly pulled a skunk out of his hat, and well-known T.V. commentator Dennis Tepperman has misplaced his microphone. I can hear socialites Rochelle Paper, Sally Lewis, and Ellen Charin preparing a speech of welcome for the Vesuvians, under the direction of Jim Roberts and Steve Dickler, political experts. Ellen Greene and Ruth Rosen are composing a song in honor of the occasion, to be played by Roger Gisolfi and sung by Dee Lichtman. Jill MacDonough, staff secretary, is searching for her notebook, and Judy Wyant, morale booster, has fainted from excite- ment. Ron Van Cleave, of United Florists, is pass- ing out boutonniers and corsages, much to the dis- tress of Mike Lytell, who is sneezing violently. The scene is one of joyous disorder, and an aura of expectancy prevails. What will lie beyond the door? We shall soon see—fasten your seat belts! The Cougard is coming in for a landing! DeSylva, on March 7 and 8. It was the football season at Tait College in Vermont. Tom Marlowe, the football hero, was needed to win their big game of the year, but unless he could pass an astronomy exam he would not be able to play. Raccoon coats, cheerleaders, the Varsity Drag, and a scene in the boys’ dormitory added color and fun to the show. The sweet- ness of Constance Lane, the cleverness of Babe O’Day, the flirtatious ways of Patricia Brigham, and the pep of Bobby Randell high- lighted a wonderful show. Congratulations to Mr. Vincent L. Seguin, Mr. J. Lloyd Browning, Mrs. Judith R. Schech- ner, and the Class of 1959 for an outstanding production! COLUM — i At 1957 5 ootball PLAINFIELD, October 5 The Cougars, in spite of the absence of 14 varsity players including Irwin Storz and Bob Schweid, put up a gallant fight but were defeated due to a last minute pass play. Captain Jim Petrozello and the Columbia line were outstanding. Bob Natiello scored the only Cougar TD on a buck from the 2. Final score: 13-6 ORANGE, October 12 The rejuvenated Cougars bounced back to romp over a weak Orange team. Steve Frampton chalked up his first victory as new head coach of the Columbia squad. L. Fader, J. Williams, F. Castronova, S. Gallagher, and B. Schweid all scored. Jim Petrozello converted twice and Irwin Storz accounted for a safety. The total score, 46 points, was the most scored by .a Columbia team since 1938. Final score: 46-7 WESTFIELD, October 19 An overpowering Cougar 11 brought the crowd to its feet, with a decisive victory over the Blue Devils at Westfield. Once again, the Columbia line proved too much for the opposition. L. Fader, Bob Schweid, and Jim Petrozello tallied for the Cougars. Irwin Storz and Fred Schilling were strong on the line while Jim Petrozello converted three times. Final score: 21-0 MONTCLAIR, November 2 The Mounties rolled over Columbia to defeat us, 35-0. Although we had a chance, the combination of R. and B. Haines and a firfn Mountie line was too much for our stalled offense. Captain Jim Petrozello, Irwin Storz, and L. Fader turned in fine performances. Final score: 35-0 KEARNY, November 9 Columbia recovered from its crushing defeat with Montclair to defeat Kearny decisively, 33-6. Coach Steve Frampton revamped the backfield inserting Bob Schweid at quarterback, and shifted L. Fader to a half-back posi- tion. Highlights of the game were L. Fader’s strong running. Bill Davis’ pass interception for a TD, and Fred Schilling’s score on a blocked punt by Ziggy Gostkowski. Bob Natiello scored the final TD on a buck from the two. Final score: 33-6 EAST ORANGE, November 16 Favored East Orange scored in the first quarter for 6 points but the Cougars weren’t down for the count. The Columbia defense stalled the Panthers for the rest of the game while our offense clicked. In the second quarter, a B. Fader to L. Fader pass-play for 45 yards scored 6 with L. Fader converting for the extra point. Leading by a point and needing insurance, Columbia drove to the Panther 1 and were stopped. Several plays later. Bob Natiello went over for the TD and 6 points. Final score: 13-6 MORRISTOWN, November 23 The Colonials with two good backs, Allison and Tillet, and a strong passing attack were too much for the Cougar eleven. B. Fader quarterbacked the game while his brother Lynn scored our only TD. Had our pass defense been sharper it might have been a different story. Bob Catena was outstanding on the line. Cross Country and Swimming turned out to be the most successful; with Cross Country winning the Big Ten title and our swimmers coming in second at the State Meet at Princeton. The foot- ball team did a satisfactory job while the basketball team struggled through the season. Coach Tom Weiner led the Cross Country Team to the Essex County Championship on November 5 after success- fully defending the Big Ten Championship on November 1. On October 18, during the East Orange Meet, Richard Koeningsberg tied the Columbia High School record when he ran the distance of 215 miles in 12 minutes and 47 seconds. Harry Hochman broke the CHS record when he ran the distance of 2.5 miles in 12 minutes and 33 seconds on October 27. In winning the Big Ten, CHS placed five boys in the first 11, while in winning the Essex County Meet, we placed five boys in the first 15 with 88 competing. In gaining second place in the State Meet, we placed five boys in the first 40 with 200 competing. Harry Hochman and Rich Koeningsberg were outstanding all season and came in second and third respectfully in the Essex Meet. Also giving fine performances all season were Howard Bruschi, Bob Maier, Tom Bayer, Tom Moore, Terry Jacobs, and Francis Drake. Although many lettermen will be graduating this June, the Harriers will have a strong nucleus for next year. Congratulations! Although the State Championship Swimming Crown sank into the greedy hands of Westfield, the varsity swimming team continued its fine streak of duel meets, winning ten out of twelve. Not only did Westfield win two duel meets from us but they also copped first place in the State Meet at Princeton. The Blue Devils amassed 66 points to our 46. At Princeton, Steve Lesnik won the 200-yard freestyle final and also took the 150-yard individual medley becoming the only double champion of the meet. Bob Slater won the diving championship with a brilliant performance. In regular competition, Lesnik set a new record for our pool, by beating the old record held by himself and Kelly, which is 1:40.3. New time . . . 1:39-8 in the 150 yard Individual Medly. Len Handel tied the old record for the 100-yard butterfly which was 1:05-3. Seniors Steve Rosenburgh, Chuck Mandelbaum, Len Handel, Jim Kridel, Jim Mc- Alister, Bob Slater, and Pete Grant have been strong all season. The varsity football team was sparked by the excellent quarterbacking of Lynn Fader. Under the leadership of Captain Jim Petrozello, the Cougar eleven entered the sea- son with high hopes. It looked as though Columbia might win the Big Ten title but due to some tough breaks and Mighty Montclair” we didn’t. Columbia’s line led by Erwin Storz, Jim Petrozello, Fred Schilling, Mike Marcus, and Bob Catena proved to be one of the strongest and most highly praised in the state. Teamed up with Lynn Fader in the backfield were Frank Castronova, Bob Natiello, John Williams, and Bob Schweid. Next year, Columbia can look forward to fine performances from Bob Schweid, A1 Walters, Henry Hyatt, Bill Davis, Bucky Fader, Paul Sever- ance, and Ziggy Gostkowski. These boys should represent a fine nucleus for next years team. Let’s hope they better this year’s record of 4-4. V G. A. A. It is the aim of the Girl’s Athletic Association to provide as complete and varied a program of activities as possible for its members. At the same time its objective is to promote the enjoyment of sports rather than to develop individual skills. In the early fall the girls don shin guards and hockey sticks to start the chase of the great escape artist known as a hockey ball. During the indoor months volleyball, basket- ball, recreational swimming and water ballet are featured. With the coming of spring the girls try their hands with bat, ball and glove. A feature of the club is the exchange playdays held in the various sports with teams from neighboring high schools. The year’s activities would not be complete without the Halloween, Christmas and final awards parties contributing extra gaiety to the busy life of the G. A. A. When it comes to awards the girls are not ones to take a back seat. All through the year they have been hard at work earning enough points for their numerals and letters which they receive at the final pajty. The club is under the leadership of the G. A. A. Council, which .meets weekly to arrange the various club activities, and urfder the sponsorship of Miss Kuhlman and Miss Paskert. ALMA MATER Oh! Columbia, thou hast taught us The path that we should tread By thy rules of pride and honor In our work and play we’re led. In the years of life’s hard struggle We care not what’s in store, For thy motto is our motto And our cry, ‘'Excelsior!” In Ufomnrtam GEORGE F.
