V j - - ;s. COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL SOUTH ORANGE AND MAPLEWOOD NEW JERSEY DEDICATION During the past three years at Columbia High School we have been inspired to higher ideals by the men and women of our faculty. They have done their utmost for us in our work and in our play. We shall always cherish our memories of them. With devoted service to their chosen profession, they have given us wisdom and strength which we need in these un- certain, troubled times. Their friendship and sincere interest have given us faith in the ultimate success of our ideals and aspirations. We, the class of 1951, therefore, dedicate this yearbook to the members of the faculty and administration with the hope that their faith in us, the younger generation, may be justified. HENRY C GRAY Senior Guide CONNIE TAUCK Class Secretary MRS. GLADYS H. HOWELL JOHN DORER Senior Guide Class President SENIOR HISTORY Soon we shall leave Columbia, and the sheltering strength of its walls. The world we shall enter is racked with the struggle between war and peace. But before we depart, let us once again consider the three happy years we have spent since we first entered high school in September, 1948. Mixed with the knowledge we have gained are the interesting experiences and memories which have been part of our school years. These shall be with us always, some of joy, others of sorrow, but all precious. Part of our early recollections of Columbia are our experiences with the omitted period and double lunch. However, we were soon Columbians cheering our football team at the rallies on Fridays and at the games on Saturdays. Before long we were part of the numerous school activities, clubs, and committees. Mid-year exams were over and our first year was drawing to a close when our Sophomore Dramatic Club presented its play. New School for Wives. Soon afterward, we watched with amazement the proceedings of the student council elections. During the campaign period we saw everything from hamsters and weight-lifters to torch singers displayed by the candi- dates in an effort to win coveted school offices. Then came June—exams—and finally summer vacation. When we entered school in the fall of our Junior year, we were much more confident. Besides the activities of the previous year, there was the added attraction of Junior Night. A carefully chosen Pre-Junior Night Committee started work on the production in the late fall and worked diligently even through Christmas vacation. There were many rumors and questions about the setting and plot, but the secret was well kept, even from our class. At a class meeting shortly after mid-year exams, we were given an idea about the plot and the many parts for which we could try out. The immense cast then started working. Those of us who were not actually in the production worked back stage, on lighting, costumes, and other committees. Almost everyone in our class had a part in 7'he Real McCoy. Our production was the fascinating musical story of a radio give away show, a hill-billy town, and an ultra luxurious hotel. Everyone found the show delightful; the musical score was wonderful and witty, and the dances very clever, especially the Charleston, which was later repeated in the review assembly. We soon found ourselves in the midst of an exciting election campaign which was bigger and louder than the year before. Of course it had deep significance, for the entire school was electing members of our class to important council positions. The actual voting procedure was sporting a new look also, due to the fact that we had voting machines. We chose the Senior Play Reading Committee, which started studying possible selections for our production in the fall. Then suddenly exams were over and we were in the midst of another summer vacation. September came, we were seniors entering Columbia for the last time. There were many changes about the school. At the football games we noted girls in the band. A night rally was held and it proved a great success. The G ugar Cage, Friday night get-togethers, started late the year before, met with renewed enthusiasm. Another innovation this year—buses were hired to take us to the away games. Again a great deal of spirit was displayed as our football team enjoyed an excellent season, winning 8 out of 9 games. Early in the fall, the class held a meeting and chose Arsenic and Oh! I ace as its final dramatic production. The cast worked very hard during the month preceding Senior Night, and was ably assisted by many class-mates working behind the scenes. The comical farce, Arsenic and Old Lace, met with great success, and was given many curtain calls. The student body found it very amusing when the twelve victims who crawled up from the cellar turned out to be male faculty members. As seniors we found ourselves in places of leadership throughout the school. Also we were confronted with the task of gaining admission to college. Soon we found ourselves enjoying Christmas vacation and then suddenly came College Board Examinations, mid-year exams, and our last semester in Columbia. Our three years are rapidly drawing to a close. Shortly we shall find ourselves facing a world with its many uncertainties and problems. It is now up to us to carry on in the tradition of Columbia High School. Page Sixty-One ARSENIC AND OLD LACE Joseph Kessclring THE CAST (In order of rheir appearance) Abb) itrc ‘Mer -------- The Rev. Midst swirling smoke and colored dye It was my job to prophesy. Then, with strength came my convictions, Now, test the truth of my predictions. Our scene a famous gallery With portraits hung lor all to see. We call this place the Hall of Fame So follow me and view the names. On our left, Paul GrofTsky's first And then comes Joseph Burke. Their playing days arc long since gone, But coaching is their work. Next we see two lovely girls, To give a concert soon. The alto's name is Gretchen, The soprano is called June. From his training as the Cougar Fd went into circus life. It's Champenois the Great now. And Nancy is his wife. Pat Connors is a tennis champ Pat Palmer runs a children's camp Walter Beck's a swimming great, And Auby Ball has found her mate. Down the Hall we re bound to see, A great man in society. When Brief makes eyes, the women groan He’s got a penthouse all his own. Here's a portrait sure to please He answers when called Danny Drees. And never can a coach refuse. This crew cut guy to run with Coos.” Barbara Beers is mtxleling And Norma Barnes still likes to sing. Peter Dinkel merely smiles As howling people fill the aisles. Last year Ann Bcsser found a guy She did it in a fine way. She’s mixed her music and her love And married Mr. Steinway. Stage manager par excellence He always gave his all. Broadway's famous theatre man The tireless Dicky Paul. The country's leading trumpeter A guy named Russell Shaw. And steady George Bahamonde Is practicing his law. Here's a little alcove With a picture you must see. The fame contains a portrait Of the New York Symphony. Stapleton's on violin Dick Calkins plays the bass. And Peter Wildes' solo voice Is sure to fill the place. Do you recall the Charleston, The dance that comes and goes? Well, Barbara Matteson teaches it For all the Broadway shows. Olympic champion Ackerman Has won again this year. And Johnny Dorer's piano Is the best that one can hear. Now a main attraction On your television screen, Are Wood and Williams, dancers, And best we've ever seen. Around the turns and down the street This driver is no fake. Seven victories of the campaign were over Fair Lawn. Irvington, Morristown, and Snyder. Nyack looked tough on paper, but strength in the re- lays proved to be the deciding factor as the mermen defeated the New York aggregation twice. In meets with Westfield and Plainfield the team suffered its only losses of the season. Mai MacKinnon's two record breaking perform- ances highlighted the successful season. In the last meet of the season with Irvington, Mai's 25.4 in the fifty yard freestyle was a new Columbia poo! record. In the state meet MacKinnon low- ered his record to 25.0, thus to be the fastest fifty man in school history. Aside from Captain MacKinnon, Walt Beck, Len Cole, Dick Foster, Pete Wilde, and Fred Brooks will be sorely missed next year as Co-Captains Pete Bernard and Bob Tupper take over. Again congratulations arc in order for Mr. Hack as he continues to put good teams in the pool. Scoring honors went to co-captains Joe Burke and Paul Groffsky. Pete Campisi and Sandy Dunn followed the big men in the scoring department. A great deal was contributed by Ed Zipfs playmaking, and the fine defensive work by Doc Nardone. Nort Jacobi and Bob Cross bolstered the team many times when the regulars failed. After losing to Hillside and Orange, the Gems beat Westfield, Bloomfield, and Nutley to begin Christmas vacation on the winning side of the slate. After the Christmas recess, the cougars were defeated by strong Central and West Orange but came back the following week to play sensational ball against Orange and Montclair who were both heavy favorites. Without a doubt the team was at its best as Pete Campisi began to score in double figures. A return match with West Orange saw the Columbia basketeers come out on the short end of a 24-23 overtime game. Sandy Dunn's last second one- hander put the game into overtime, but the extra period saw the Cowboys win. Following the second win over Nutley, the red and black lost five games. In the game with undefeated Belleville hopes for a win were shattered early as the Bellboys made their first eight shots. Wins over East Orange and New Brunswick finished the season. Joe Burke and Paul Groffsky were elected to the first team all-Oranges and Pete Gtmpisi received honorable mention. Through her efforts we received our first true introduction to Columbia. Miss Cas- well's interest in all pupils, past and present, was evident in the many pictures and newspaper clippings posted on her office walls. She followed as well as guided us in her sympathetic way, and was always willin',; to help us with problems of all kinds. Whenever one of us found it difficult to understand the point of view of adults, whether our parents or our teachers, or to get along happily with our classmates or friends, she helped us solve the diffieulty. As our Latin teacher, .Miss Caswell encouraged the shy students to tuke u more active part in class work and to consult her about difficult work. Whenever one of her pupils was ill. she was tin first to call his home to inquire about him. Miss Caswell's whole life was centered about the school and her work. She desired to remain as our guide as long as it was possible. We are able to pay our most fitting tribute to Miss Caswell hv following the paths of knowledge she paved for us and hy being the successful citizens she thought and hoped we would he.
