Our S li ol I SENIOR HISTORY Soon we shall graduate, and our three short years in Columbia High School will be over. How quickly time has passed since that day early in September, 1946, when first we entered the portals of our Alma Mater. In a few weeks our high school days will be but memories of joy and sorrow—memories never to be forgotten. In our brief stay, we have gained precious knowledge and experience. Let’s roll back the calendar three years. Remember the empty feeling in your stomach that morning when we entered the gates of the great unknown, and how we held on to our “High- lights” as the only ray of light to our thoroughly bewildered minds? Some of us enjoyed two lunch periods a day for several weeks, while others search- ed in vain for that missing period. However, we soon found ourselves, and a world of new oppor- tunities presented itself. We became a part of Columbia as we joined the various clubs and com- mittees, sat in the cheering section at Saturday's football games, cheered our baseball and basketball teams on to victory, and attended school dances and rallies. We displayed our talent in the Sopho- more Dramatic Club’s production, and assumed our part in the spring elections. In a few weeks, after taking those ever-feared final exams, we started the long awaited summer vacation. With the summer behind us, we reentered school in fall. Now, we were juniors and “in on the ground floor.” With the prospects of college in full view, school had become more serious. Still, though, there were many good times in store. That year the foot- ball games were sporting a new look. New band uniforms, twirlers, and girl cheerleaders added color and spirit to the games. Before the Christmas vaca- tion, during which we saw the greatest blizzard in the history of New Jersey, Pre-Junior Night Com- mittee plunged into the job of writing an extrava- ganza to be put on in the spring. Behind closed doors, and with a general air of secrecy, we worked diligently preparing properties and rehearsing the show'. Almost everyone in the Junior Class had a part in its production. Finally, on the Ides of March, “Thumbs Up” was presented. The show was a musical fantasy concerning the election of a Roman politician in the days of Caesar, the romance of his daughter and a Roman soldier, and the plight of five modern Americans who find themselves lost in Rome of 2000 years ago. The musical score, written by members of the class, was tops. A few weeks later we were in the midst of a closely contested election for council officers. June came, and with another graduation, we bade farewell to many friends. The summer quickly passed, and September found us “mighty seniors.” During the summer va- cation the Senior Play Reading Committee had been studying various selections under considera- tion for the senior play, and, in mid-September, the senior class made its choice. The play was the unforgettable Broadway hit, “Life With Father.” It was the first time the show had been given as a high school production, and before the curtain went up Friday night, the cast received a congrat- ulatory telegram from Howard Lindsay, co-author of the play. A thrilling success, the show ranked as one of Columbia’s best senior play productions. During our last year, we assumed the leadership of the various school organizations. However, this year we were confronted with the serious problem of college entrance. With the aid of college con- ferences we dispatched our applications and pre- pared diligently for the College Board examina- tions. Christmas and exams were soon behind us, and we found ourselves finishing our last semester in high school. Now, as we stand on the threshold of gradua- tion, we recall, with joy and solemn pride, our three years in Columbia High School. The world we enter is overburdened with fears and doubts, but as we move forward we shall never lose hope nor faith. We shall carry on high freedom’s shining torch and never forget the guiding words of our Alma Mater: “In the years of life’s hard struggle. We care not what’s in store, For thy motto is our motto, And our cry, “Excelsior!” Page Twenty ILENE ABRAMSON “Cookie” 13 Rutgers Street Maplewood Sophomore Dramatic Club 2 G.A.A. 2, S; Parnassian So- ciety 3, 4; Homeroom Vice-president 2; Homeroom President 3; Junior Night Cast 3; Senior Play Reading Committee 4; Senior Play, Assistant Director 4; Lyceum 4; Finance Committee 3, 4; Pan-American Club 3, 4; Personality Club 3; Inter-cultural Club 4. Page Eighty SENIOR PROPHECY This year, and perhaps no other, is the most eventful and colorful for certain Columbia High School graduates. Maybe the recent occurrence of both the Olympic Games and the presidential campaign had something to do with it; and maybe not. However, never before have so many Columbia graduates been so successful in their various fields of en- deavor. I refer, of course, to those alumni who graduated eleven years ago — in 1949. I have just returned from a nation-wide tour in con- nection with the presidential campaign of I960. Believe it or not, Bob Mielich, the Republican National Chairman, is still trying to get someone called Dewey elected. And imag- ine—Norman Thomas is still running for President! As Peter Sterling, governor of the State of Idagon, said in his press conference: “There has been a tendency in the last few elections to have quite a large number of candidates; conse- quently it has become traditional for them all to share the same campaign train.” Naturally, the actual candidates were not the only people on this all-important rolling caravan. Also traveling were hundreds of nationally prominent people, including Don Campbell, Secretary of the Treasury since the Greenback administration; Barbara Dieter, famous author of that best- seller, Midgets in the Mud; Pete Rommel, Chairman of the board of directors of Colonel Mills, makers of “Catalog’s Pep”; Phylis Knight, noted dramatic critic and artist for the magazine, “Vogue”; and Professor Bill McBurney, who teaches history and economics to college graduates only. Doctor Vic Dankis, M.D., was doubling as a poll-taker while on the train. It seems that his great-grandfather ran two polls during the Civil War—the North Poll and the South Poll.” Additional important passengers were Steve Miller, Pres- ident of the National Association of Industrial Designers, which he was representing on the campaign; Jean Sharkey, famous actress starring in two Broadway Plays; Beverly Dan- iels, noted violinist with her own radio program, “The Fid- dler”; George Loeffler. nationally known astronomer and the first man to complete a round trip to the moon; and Emily Grady, prominent lawyer who has had many a good case since being admitted to the bar. Once, while entering the dining car, I met Bill Lord, who owns quite a large boat- building industry and has designed two new classes of sail- boats—the “Seahorse” and the “Sawhorse.” Of course in mentioning this campaign, I must not for- get the press, which was ably represented by Bob Agman, managing editor of “Agman’s Amalgamated News Co.”, and his famous columnists, Phyllis Dolsen and Arlene Carlson. In fact, it was while glancing at a newspaper that 1 spied this headline: “Bill Reynolds, eminent biologist, discovers centipede with ninety-nine legs.” I turned the page and was immediately attracted by an advertisement which read, “O. U. Wolf, furrier, is having a sale on men’s ankle-length fur coats.” John Sugarman is the successful sales manager of O. U. Wolf Co. The train stopped at Maplewood, N. J., one day, be- cause all nine major candidates were scheduled to give speeches there; and I decided to find out if any Columbia graduates still lived in the vicinity. I soon discovered that Barry Hutchings and Bill Clingan are well-known chemical engineers and are carrying on some research for the gov- ernment on account of the discovery of a deposit of uranium ore in Maplewood. The city of Orange, not to be out-done by Boston, now has its own symphony orchestra, under the able direction of Don Satterfield, and appropriately called “The Orange Pops.” Returning to the train just as the last speech was over, I noticed many new passengers boarding it. Among them I recognized Beverly Jones and Milly Kunz who were on leave from the State Mental Hospital (where they are employed as psychiatrists!). As usual, Beverly started talking; and I soon learned that Jack Drury and Dick Witzig are still trying to organize a Cougar Alumni Dance with evervone attending; and that Fcrd Gaukstern and Nancy Macdonald, former Junior Night stars, are now in Hollywood with the Bob Olwine Telecast. (Bob is a famous comedian.) She also told me that Dorothy Brun, June Sproule, Marv Jane Radcliffe, Joan Towey, Shirley June, and Celia Schweik- hardt are in a famous dance group headed by Joan Julian, who has taken up Martha Graham’s work and is hoping to become “Mrs. X” soon. She added that Hildy Katchen. Julie Paddock, Joan Asselmeyer, Nancy Bernard, and Cookie Kreuter, former choir members under the direction of Mr. Shenton and his spike-tipped baton, have become the musi- cal team, “Five Misses,” which sings radio commercials. Later, while reading a copy of Strife Magazine, whose editor, Joe Newman, nas made it the best one in the coun- try. I came across an excellent cartoon about prize fighting by Garry Casserly, which illustrated an article concerning Herb Roemmele, noted fight promoter of the 20th Century Sporting Club. Speaking of sports, I turned on the radio in the club car and heard Dick Lawall announcing a swimming meet at the Olympic Games, which were held in California this year. Jim Mehorter had just won the diving event for the United States, and Jim Fetter was ahead in the 100-yard backstroke. At the track and field events, held in the Rose Bowl, Amos Plante, an aeronautical designer, became one of America’s track stars. He is now known as “The Flying Hurdler.” Dave Hawkins, a professional golfer, also coached the United States Gym Team, on which David Douglass performed very well. John and Ed Horbelt are both playing professional baseball; and their team won the World Series this season. Columbia was also represented in football this year, since Bob Reaves, Barry Kalb, Tom Rehfeldt, and Johnny Gib- bons are on a professional team whose manager is Barrett (Spike) Hazeltine. The Presidential train stopped at one city which gave a large dinner and reception for all the passengers. The dinner was prepared by Jane Raymond’s Catering Company. On this occasion, I met even more Columbia graduates than I ex- pected to. including Bruce Flanagan, President of the local amateur dramatic group, “The Perambulators”; Jeanne Sze- remany, organist at Radio City Music Hall; Rear Admiral Howard Wright of the United States Navy; Joy Clason, who runs a correspondence school of sewing on the Thimble Islands; Don Winston, who runs a summer theater on Cape Cod; Barbara Schmidt, cover-artist for the Saturday Evening Post; and Dick Szeremany, who gives piano, organ, and bull-fiddle lessons at his music studio in the town of Natural Flats, Kansas. While I was there, I found out that Dick Brubaker and Carl Kastner arc running a truck-rental business. Their slogan is “U-Drive It: We Can’t.” Another thing I found out is that the firm of Stan Greene and Dick Pollack, invest- ment brokers, has just broken another investment. They rented the 80th floor of the Empire State Building, their previous office not being large enough for their financial business. On the way back to the train, I noticed an airplane doing some sky-writing; and I was told the pilot was Mar- garet Owen, who is working for the A.A.A.A. (Ace Aerial Ad- vertising Association). Soon I realized that she was adver- tising the coming movie featuring Ed Coleman’s band and starring Dennis Laffer and Jim Lebo, Hollywood’s new comedy team which replaced Abbott and Costello. I don’t know how this election of 1960 will turn out; but that is how the class of 1949 turned out. Our Seniors ar Statistics Our Seniors SENIOR WILE We, the graduating class ot 1949, after one year of re- ceiving wrong directions and after two years of giving them, after learning to shoot our water pistols accurately, and aftei worrying over the fate of the schmoos, are finally about to depart. The Junior Class at Columbia was inserted by the founders, it is said, with the sole purpose of knocking down a student, hitting him over the head, tickling his toes, and in other ways mauling him. Of course, this is just exaggeration (things like that happen only up in the clock tower), but when a student becomes a Junior there are certain things which come to pass that hit him right be- tween the eyes and send him reeling to his corner. I shall try to delve a little deeper into this mess, fellow Juniors. Did you know that the minute you stepped into your new classes on that first day back in Septem- ber the wardens—ah, teachers—were putting into operation a new plan? This plan had been sizzling in the minds of certain people high in the ranks of Columbia’s faculty. One said, “This new Junior Class should emulate its ardent, magnanimous, and especially omniscient predecessors instead of reiter- ating its abysmal transgressions.” That was the English teacher. The Math, teacher said, “If C equals the root of the quantity A squared plus B squared, then this Junior Class ought to get to work.” We won’t go into what the language teach- ers said, will we, Juniors? Anyway, the faculty de- cided that this Junior Class would have to work since it had wasted all its time in its Sophomore (let's not mention that revolting word again) year. So they have been piling the school work on thick, and it isn’t fair. We’ve never worked before, so why must we begin now? I don’t know. And there are other things, too. It seems, for in- stance, that many more Juniors are called up on the line for misdemeanors than (ugh!) Sophomores or Seniors. I suppose it’s because the people who administer justice here figure that that Sophomore doesn’t know any better and the Senior will leave in June, anyway. The Juniors are probably distracted from their work because they are just beginning to turn their thoughts to members of the opposite—oh, that couldn’t be a reason; we were doing that long ago! Still another tribulation of the Juniors is the question of colleges. Now, they say, a student must begin worrying about college in his Junior year. The student, in picking out his college, must at- tend conferences, explore catalogues, learn about entrance examinations. This is a very puzzling ex- perience, and the more Joe Junior worries—which he is very likely to do—the more befuddled he be- comes. Should he take a College Board or an A. X. P. (or something like that) if he wishes to at- tend Lower Bicycle Heights University? Does he have to take an entrance examination if he was an all-state football player? To find the solution to any of these problems is very simple. You ask your Junior Guides and if they don’t succeed in confusing you completely they might possibly hap- pen on a solution. But just hang on, fellow Juniors—we’ll be in the upper brackets next year. OPJtOMOJtjES WHO REALLY RUNS COLUMBIA ? It was organized in the fall of 1948, and is under the sponsorship of Mr. MacDonough. The object of this new club is to play chess, to promote chess in Columbia, and to teach chess to beginners. There are tournaments set up in the club, and the members hope to take trips to see other tournaments. They also hope to get some professionals to come and visit their club and play chess with them. Page One H and red-five COMMERCIAL CLUB President Bobby Betz Vice-president Joan Davies Secretary Catherine Gallagher T reasurer Betty Avagliano Faculty Advisers Mrs. Hopper Miss Bullock Under the direction of Mrs. Hopper and Miss Bullock, the girls who plan on entering the commercial field after graduation from high school are given practical experience in the Commercial Club. They are shown how to operate machines that they may have to use in business. In the picture the mimeograph machine is being explained to them. This all-girls club had forty members this year. I hey take trips to the stock exchange and business offices where they wit- ness the type of work they will be doing. Our Clubs FOItVM ItOMAmjM President Jack Bain Vice-president Jean Lomax Secretaiy Carol Kushman Treasurer Dick Kelley Faculty Adviser Miss Sanders Attempting to capture some of the customs and mannerisms of the Romans, the Latin Club has planned its activities to include an interesting study of the Roman people. In the spring a banquet was held which resembled a Roman banquet of old, including the setting, customs, and food. In celebration of the Yuletide, a Christmas party was scheduled at which the members sang songs in Latin. On certain occasions plays pertaining to Latin were performed. A trip taken to the Metropolitan Museum provided some interesting diversion. l'aae One Hundred Six O FRENCH CM AU President Sandy Sheffield Vice-president Laura Jane Klein Secretary Emily Ketterson Treasurer Arthur Grove Program Chairman Barbar Dieter Faculty Advisers Mr. Fleming Miss Freeman Twice during the year Mr. Fleming and Miss Freeman escort a group of French students to New York. They eat in a French restaurant and then see a French movie. With permission from home, a pupil may leave the group after the movie. The club has regular meetings on the third Thursday in each month and several parties during the year. The members take part in the meetings; some of them put on little skits for the others. Mr. Fleming also teaches the group French songs. Our Clubs FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA President Simone Flax Vice-president George Pilkington Secretary-T reasurer Peggy Satz Executive Council Connie Kidner Barbara Dieter Barbara Sire Faculty Advisers Miss Alexander, Mr. Gray Today all over the United States groups of high school boys and girls who are interested in teaching as a profession are forming Future Teachers of Amer- ica Clubs. Forty-five students from Columbia High School have shown their in- terest in teaching and have been helping wherever and in whatever way they can. To become better accjuaintcd with the profession, they visited Montclair and Newark Teachers’ Colleges and have seen three movies: The Teacher as Counsellor and Guide, Teaching Art and Domestic Science, and Teaching Citi- zenship. Pane One Hundred seven o GERMAN CLUB President Ludwig Pietz Vice-president Mary Oswald Secretary Marlene Veith Treasurer Allen Pois Faculty Adviser Mrs. Gates Under the fine leadership of its executive members, the German Club made its plans for a successful year. Interesting letters, written by German students of high school age, were read at the initial meeting. Accompanied by its proctor, Mrs. Gates, the club made a journey to the Metropolitan Opera House where they saw the “Meister-singer”. Some of the musically inclined members partici- pated in a talent show which provided novel entertainment. For recreation a German Christmas play was dramatized, parlor games were enjoyed by everyone, and at special sessions refreshments were served to all attending. Our Clubs GUILD President Francis Richter Vice-president George Drake Secretary Mary Marston and Barbara Dieter Treasurer Conrad Saunders Program Chairman Ida Briscoe Faculty Adviser Miss Nichols The English Guild, under the supervision of Miss Nichols, gives students their chance to express them- selves in writing. It is necessary to pass tryouts to join the Guild, and the most talented become members. To pass the tryouts, one must write a good piece of any type or subject. A new poem group has just been added to the Guild. The Guild has regular meetings every month. The program chairman plans the meetings, getting to- gether his stories and poems to read, or a little play put on by a few members. LYCEUM President Bill McBurney Vice-president Walter Farrier Secretary Marcia Mandel T reasnrer Jean Lewitt Faculty Adviser Miss Lipscei Columbia’s debating club, Lyceum, sponsored by Miss Lipscei, is one of the school’s very active clubs. At least once a year they attend the New Jersey Inter- national Relations Forum where they hear distinguished speakers, such as Max Lerner and Dorothy 1 hompson. During their club meetings they have panel discussions on timely topics. This year in assembly they gave a program discuss- ing the topic “Who Should Win the Election?” They hope to be able to hold debates with other schools such as Irvington and Orange High. Our Clubs •« MATH CLUB President Dick Henry Vice-president Allen Pois Secretary Harold Gilbert Faculty Adviser Mr. Talbot After a vote was taken to determine what topics would be most enlightening, the Math Club obtained various speakers who taught the members the funda- mentals of these topics. Mr. Woodbury spoke on surveying and explained some of its principles. Mr. Paige not only interpreted some problems in navigation, but also exhibited numerous devices used by the navigator. Demonstrations with the slide rule were held by the more skilled members, and these were ac- companied by explanatary movies. For a change in routine, parties provided a pleasure for everyone. Page One Hundted nine Mvsic nox President Laura Jane Klein Vice-President Carol Taylor Secretary Ralph Miller Treasurer Joan Asselmeyer Faculty Adviser Mr. Shenton The Music Box is the ideal club for those who are talented in, or just plain interested in music. Its meetings, held within the cozy confines of the music room, are friendly and informal. These meetings are run entirely by the students, and members participate in group singing and entertainment. One of the high points in thee lub’s schedule this year was a trip to New York to see the opera “Lucia” at the Metropolitan Opera House. Our Clubs PAA-AMEBMCAH CLUB President Barry Lipman Vice-president Barbara Hendricks Secretary-T rcasurer Judy Bard Faculty Advisers Mrs. Palminteri Mrs. Ahern If you’re an aspiring Spanish student, the Pan-Ameri- can Club is lor you. The members do skits, radio shows, and musicals to entertain one another, but every word is spoken in Spanish. The yearly expedition to New York to see a Mexican or Spanish movie is a source of amusement throughout the year. It’s those speeches they don't put English sub-titles under that make peo- ple want to take three years of espanol. And that’s not all: there are refreshments at every meeting. PERSONALiTY CLUB President Gayle Brueggeman Vice-president Carol Pierson Secretary Betty Swan Treasurer Carol Taylor Faculty Adviser Miss Clough Debates, such as the one pictured here, are one of the many varied activities of the Personality Club. Their monthly meetings often include movies on dating or college life, and frequently a guest speaker is invited to talk with them, and help them overcome individual problems. The members discuss ways to become more attractive, physically and psychologically, and I’m sure you’ll agree they practice what they preach. Because of its interesting and well-rounded program, this club for junior and senior girls is one of the most popular found in Co- lumbia. Our Clubs RABiO CLUB President Jack Fox Vice-president Don Wawshe Secretary- T r easur er Ludwig Pietz Faculty Adviser Mr. Chase The Radio Club of Columbia High School has the honor of being the old- est club in the school. There has been a great deal of improvement in its equip- ment since its first days. The members recently rebuilt their radio set and now have a new 200 foot antenna from the school’s tower. They have an official li- cense, W2MZE, and with their set they can send and receive within a range of 1,000 miles. During their meetings they frequently talk with parties in Connec- ticut or New York. What a year! It all started with a party at which Mother Hubbard’s seven new children (Sophomore Council members) were introduced to the other club members. Soccer followed, and Miss Beach was kept busy with bruises on the tibias until the end of the season. The Seniors emerged from the slaughter victorious; that is, still in one piece. Basketball? Well, the basket was always there, but one was never sure where the ball was. One thing was certain, however: it was never in the basket. If the basket had been on the ceiling, the scores would have reached the hundreds. Then the Christmas stage performance! The teachers stole the show along with Mary who was looking for the two front teeth she had lost in a soccer game. Volleyball! A rugged sport. Evidently the players on the end courts had forgotten what game they were playing, for more balls hit the basket than had hit it during the entire basketball season. Splash! Into the pool went the swimming team whose motto was “The old gray suits, they ain’t what they used to be.” This year the swimmers did fairly well, having finally learned to swim on top of the water. She’s out! And so was school as the last sport of the year came to a climactic end with a shy Sophomore hitting a home run while attempting to bunt. Wait! Don’t forget the awards party which honored the courageous ones who had weathered five or six sports. Honored also were the successors of Mother Hubbard and her staff. The year’s calendar is now complete except for the many daily happenings which, though hardly worth mentioning, were lots of fun. Remember the cru- cial contests—boys versus girls—over possession of third field, which the girls al- way won; and the savage water ballets held in the vicinity of the locker-room drinking fountain; or the fierce rivalry as to who had the most lavishly decorated locker? These and many other incidents have made the year a full and happy one, especially for the Seniors, who bid a fond adieu after having finally won a plus point.
