SENIORS 2. JUNIORS 3. SOPHOMORES 4. ORGANIZATIONS 5. FEATURES 6. ATHLETICS 7. ADVERTISEMENTS MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL TO the Seniors: I suppose most of you seniors are giving considerable thought to your plans after graduation. Most of you know what you are going to begin, but few of you know exactly what life has in store for you. If you did, much of the joy and pleasure of living would be removed, for we human beings thrive on the ambitions, anticipations, hopes, and plans which make living the glorious adventure that it is. • In your educational experience and life thus far you should have dis- covered yourselves to a certain extent. You should now appreciate many of your abilities and disabilities, your likes and your dislikes, your strengths and your weaknesses. You should know these better than anyone else— parent, teacher, or friend. Your task is to take stock of these personal quali- ties and fit yourselves into the world in such a way as to insure your own best adjustment to your fellows and the material world about you. It seems that you are going to participate in a more highly developed and sensitively adjusted cooperative society than has existed heretofore. If so, you will have a more challenging life than members of past generations have had. In the kind of cooperative society that will be tolerated in this democracy of ours the individual will be called on to adjust himself to more things and more people than has been the case heretofore. There will be greater, not less, challenge to the individual than ever before, and therefore more satisfaction. I suspect your greatest needs in the living that stretches out ahead of you will be faith in yourselves and confidence in other people. Each of you has ability. Make the most of it. Most of the people whom you meet are all trying to do the right thing. Be friendly with them. Success and happiness do not come from the outside world, but come from within yourselves. Both will be realized in direct proportion tc your ability to adjust to yourselves and to the world about you. God speed and best wishes! Most cordially, C. H. THRELKELD, Principal. MIRROR 1935 Page Eight MIRROR 1935 Page Eleven SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President .............WILLIAM BORRIE Vice-President ...............CORA FARR Secretary ........CHARLOTTE KNAPP Treasurer ......WILLIAM EBERHARDT SENIOR CLASS COUNCIL SENIOR CLASS HISTORY IN June of this year our class will leave Columbia High School to seek places in the world. The time has come for our little caravan to hit the dusty trail of life. For twelve years we have been preparing to make the journey into the outside world; for twelve years we have been learning how to live, and now at last our restless group is ready to proceed into the future. Youth seeks new fields of endeavor, and onward, ever onward, we are destined to march. Yes, for twelve years we have been preparing to go into the world, and it hardly seems possible that at last we are ready to depart. Three of the most important of these preparatory years were spent in Columbia High School, and in these years we have become proud of that school, proud of what it has taught us, proud of its traditions, its teachers, its spirit. Our so- journ in Columbia has been both enjoyable and eventful. We have partici- pated in all phases of extra-curricular activity and have produced our share of the school's actors, speakers, musicians, journalists, athletes, office holders, and scholars. As sophomores we continued the Sophomore Dramatic Club, organized the Stamp Club, and the radio division of the Science Club, and produced Bon Voyage , a superb musical operetta. Several of our actors were ad- mitted to the Parnassian Society as sophomores. Norman Freund played varsity basketball and football as a sophomore. Russell Adams and Edwin Nevius earned many points for the swimming team as divers. Gordon Annin was a Columbian reporter as a sophomore. The class of '35 was represented in all of our school's organizations. As juniors we again took the stage with our Junior Night production, Fair Enough. This musicale created an evening of enjoyment for all who witnessed it. During this year many members of our class .became promi- nent in school activities. Sully's wit and Borrie's tenor voice became well- known. The dramatic ability of Bob Schultz, Marion Moss, and John Harvey advanced to populari'.y. Many members of our class were outstanding in athletics. We won the annual G. A. A. banner in the interclass sports com- petitions. As seniors we presented as the annual senior play, The Royal Family . Special commendation for this production went to the cast which was headed by Petie Heflin, Marian Moss, Margaret Kay, and Marshall Rothen. During our senior year Gordon Annin distinguished himself as editor-in-chief of our school paper, The Columbian . Lucille Annin became noted for her poetry and wit; Joe Haydu for his neckties, Kirby Preston for his fighting spirit, Marguerite Hirschberger for her dancing and enthusiasm. The hockey team and swimming team, represented by seniors, had a brilliant season, the former winning the state championship. Marshall Rothen headed our student council with Ann Rcberts as vice-president; Bill Borrie was our class president. Our years in Columbia High School have been three happy years. We have enjoyed every moment of them and have derived much pleasure and profit from cur varied activities. We have made many lifelong friends, and although our caravans may take us on our dusty way to the farthest comers of this globe, wherever we go, whatever we do, we shall always remember our school and endeavor to uphold its standards. Finally, we herewith name and appoint, as sole executor of this our last will and testament, Mr. Crehan's spats. We feel if any trouble arises they will get to the foot of the mishap. IN WITNESS THEREOF, we, the class of 1935, the testator, have set our hand and seal on this, the twenty-first day of June, in the year of our Lord MCMXXXV. THE SENIOR PLAY COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL Auditorium, November 24, 1934, 8:30 o'clock; a hush falls over the audience and the curtain slowly rises on the first act of The Royal Family. A fast-moving, modern comedy, meeting with great popularity both on the Broadway stage and on the screen, this play proved a difficult but successful test of the ability and talent of the senior class. The plot concerns itself with the lives of the various members of a certain well- known stage family—the Barrymores—or as in the play, the Cavendish family. Each member of the family determines to quit the stage and live a peaceful, private life. But their attempts meet with futility, fcr the bond of acting is far too strong among them. The swift-moving action and clever remarks of the play kept the audience in a continual state of laughter and it was with profound regret that the assembly saw the final curtain come down with the death of Fanny Cavendish. The cast, under the direction of Miss Christie Tollefson, spent many hours of hard work on this play, and the re- sult was a finished and finely acted production. Each member fitted his role to perfection and carried out his individual part with amazing ability. Marion Moss, as Fanny Cavendish, a dominant old woman of seventy, and head of the Cavendish clan, is to be particularly commended for her outstanding portrayal, along -with Marshall Rothen, who in playing the role of Tony Cavendish, scapegrace of the family, held the audience in excitement and laughter throughout the play with his unusual antics and excellent acting. Other members of the supporting cast who deserve a great deal of com- mendation were Petie Heflin as Julie Cavendish, John Harvey as Her- bert Dean, Margaret Kay as Gwen Cavendish, Jack Prior as Oscar Wolfe, Dick Jennings as 'Perry, Cameron Moseley as Gilbert Marshall, Dorothy Egger as Kitty, Janice Hallett as Della, Alan Herman as Jo, Leon Rechmitz as McDermott, Doris Adams as Miss Peake, Bob Bramley as Gunga, James Brothers as Wo Fan, Jack Rimalover as a chauffeur, Russell Adams and Herbert Stine as hallboys. MIRROR 1935 Page Fifty-six MIRROR 1935 Page Fifty-seven SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY MR. WELLS refused to lend us his Time Machine; the invention possessed a copyright and could not be trusted with strangers. In this dilemma we hastened to Scotland to consult the three witches and secure some ad- vanced information. The creatures were in despondent mood. Business had dropped steadily away since Macbeth's time. They had lost all their teeth and couldn't man- age the poetry very well. But in order not to disappoint their young admirers they danced feebly around the fire and said: Bobble, bobble, limp and hobble; Times are chang'd, and now we wobble. Handing us a copy of a magazine, the first witch called plaintively to the others and the three of them disappeared, obviously glad that the inter- view was over. The magazine is dated June 12, 1945. It might easily be an Alumni Weekly of Columbia High School. On the cover is an enormous self-portrait of Commander Harvey Convery, youthful head of a naval expedition to the South Seas. This is surprising; we had expected him to become an architect. Upon the inner side of the cover Barrel Galowitz supersedes Charles Atlas as the world's strongest and most perfectly-developed man. Among the first news items we read that Ann Roberts is replacing James Ludlow as Secretary of the Treasury. Mr. Ludlow declares: The mutation, I feel, is in the best interests of the fiancial stability of the nation. Cora Farr, fair-haired leader of the younger Four Hundred, is preparing for a wedding. It takes two to make a wedding. There is a conservative announcement to the effect that Lucile Annin and Gertrude Stein are appearing in lectures together. Miss Annin, from whom we expect some great poetry, is married, but refuses to divulge the name of her husband. John Harvey's Macbeth is beginning to take rank as one of the finest interpret aliens of its day and age. William Borrie, virile operatic star, announces his intention of reviving Fair Enough. His managers, while confident of his extraordinary powers, appear dubious about the public's reception of this classic opus. The politicians are earnestly discussing prospects of nominating Marshall Rothen for United States Senator from New York in 1948. News from Hollywood indicates that Alan Herman and his cigar will soon direct the film version of Robert Schultz's great stage success, An American Comedy, starring Elizabeth Heflin. Robert Sullivan, America's best-loved comedian, vehemently asserts that he will not sign a contract with any motion picture outfit unless his salary is stipulated as $25,000 weekly. Another article states that Mayor Richard Jenpings has begun a 'clean-up' campaign in Hollywood. Dorothy Matthews, youthful novelist, is voyaging to Bermuda. Walter Niebling, vice-president of the Erie Railroad, has suddenly felt the need of a vacation. He is on the same boat. The sports, page displays a picture of Leo Sklarz, sprinter of a few years back, who explains why he never ran the hundred in eight seconds' flat. One wonders why he never ran it in five. Red Richardson plans to stride across the United States in record time. Lest these prognostications throttle the ambitions of those mentioned, we left the periodical in the care of the three witches, who were so apathetic that they didn't even place a curse on us as we left. JUNIOR NIGHT WITH the crack of his whip, and at the blare of the band, Joe Gibbons as ringmaster led an eager audience over the top to the famed circus of the Class of '36. The performance was marked by its snappy tempo. From the opening circus parade, starting at the back of the auditorium, and creat- ing a decided stir, the audience responded enthusiastically to the frolics of the performers. You're the Top , an original parody, sung by Sally Guerin and Doris McGinity, introduced the first act of the circus. The Pony Ballet, with its whip cracking drivers and prancing steeds, danced their way to fame and succeeded in gaining an encore. The Man on the Flying Trapeze number was particularly appealing because of the well-known song and the humorous pantomime. Master Frederic Crehan, as the besatined jockey with his old gray mare, caused many feminine hearts to flutter. A note of seri- ousness entered the program with the presentation of A Night in an Inn. The entire performance was marked by an intensity of suspense. Bruce Stau- derman's ability as an emotional actor was proved by his remarkable rendi- tion of Snigger . The cowboy and gypsy numbers, as well as the side-show features, won the favor of the audience. PRIOR MIRROR 1935 Page Ninety-five COMMENTS WHEN asked what they thought of their three years spent in Columbia, various students replied: 1. K. Lurich: I've learned my lesson. 2. C. Gardner: Oh yeah! 3. H. Convery: The study of the blotter is very absorbing. 4. S. Stearns: I've got to like the teachers quite a bit, especially Miss Vale. 5. G. Schultz: I haven't been here three years, so there. ( So what? you mean, Mr. Schultz.) 6. J. Perry: Veil, I'm tailin' you. 7. W. Niebling: I suppose so. 8. A fellow named Rimwinkle said: Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. (We have no idea who this fellow Rimwinkle is or how he got in here.) 9. M. Rothen: These three years have been as good as a trip around the world. (Well, almost.) 10. B. Borrie: (Censored). 11. R. Adams: The same as I thought three years ago. (He wouldn't tell us what he thought three years ago.) 12. P. Clark: (He has just siuboed his toe so the whole remark is censored.) 13: Smith: I'll be glad to get out of here. (We feel safe in printing this since there are so many Smiths.) 14. R. Schultz: A-l-1 i-n a-1-1, I've be-e-n v-e-r-y b-u-s-y. 15. C. Farr: Well, fancy meeting you here. 16. L. Sklarz: I've learned two things at Columbia: first, to run; second, to sing. I always could run and I still can't sing. 17. D. Tag: I like school and the swimming pool, and the boys and the teachers, and especially the girls. 18. P. Auerbacher: I have a strange attachment to the place. I think I'll stay here another year or so. 19. L. Stillman: There are quite a number of things that I have found wrong with the place. 20. G. Annin: They've had all the news that was fit to print. 21. J. Stella: Perfect. 22. R. Sullivan: I enjoyed myself immensely when I wasn't studying. Incidentally, I enjoyed myself most of the time. A COLUMBIA A-B-C A is for Athletes, healthy and bold; B's for Borrie, who sings, we are told; C is for Crehan, whom none can forget; D's for the Discipline most of us get; E's for Exams, getting much harder; JL F is the Flunk we're given with ardour; G is for Gnagey, a tip-top romancer; H is for Hansen, an excellent dancer; I s for Ichabod, no one knows why; I is for Jung, who always says Hi ; K is for Knowledge, for which we all strive, L is for License, if you like to drive; M's for the Maidens, beauties they are; N is for N—ing, that's done in the car; O is for Orange, that won six to seven; P is for Proms that end at eleven; Q is for Quiet, in study there's none; R is the Rothen, The son of a gun ; S is for Smoking, on school grounds forbidden; T's for the Teachers who're constantly ridden; U is for Us, plain us , that's all; V's for Vacations; just look when they fall, W's for Wakely, a miler, and how! X means Forbidden , we mustn't allow; Y is the Youth we wish were more free; Z's for the Zero we too often see. Nitting—A new spelling for Knitting, the popular sport at present. Fooled you, eh? MIRROR Page Ninety-six MIRROR 1935 Page Ninety-seven DON'T TELL US YOU HAVEN'T - - - Felt the chills run up and down your spine during on eof our swell pep assemblies. We know we certainly have. Incidentally, we later discovered the door to the yard was open behind us. Seen Roger Stewart conversing with one of his innumerable feminine admirers. Seen Gale Spowers and Bob Schultz on the stage in one of their original and amusing skitches (half skit and half sketch). Come to class unprepared and prayed that the teacher would not call on you. To the ones (we sincerely trust that there was more than one) who have succeeded in not getting caught, we present the copper-plated leather noodle and our heartiest congratulations. Said in bye-gone days, Oh, I didn't know, I'm only a sophomore. (Or were you afraid to admit it.) Gypped a class. (Now the real question) Been caught gypping a class. If you are not yet per- fect at this art, write for our little book entitled Caught Short, written by one of our well-known seniors. All you need to get this book, is to tear the top off your desk, or the teacher's, if she's not look- ing; scribble the name on it (NO! not the teacher's); and send it in. Seen Hellrigle go down under kicks, and tackle his man before he had a chance to get started. Had that sinking sensation when the phone rings and you are told to report to the office at the! end of the period. You invariably discover that it was Miss Hayner wishing to pass the time of day with you, and yet there is that strange sensation. Had the insane desire to sneak upon the mighty maestro Batchelder as he takes his shut-eye, and silently shave away that misplaced eyebrow that he deigns to call mustache. (See editor's note below). Wanted to start a general strike among all the students. Editor's Note: That is not an insane idea at all. In fact, as this goes to press, someone, perhaps the maestro himself, has shaved it away. 9_______Q REMEMBER Maglio's 80-yard run against West Orange in 1933? When the curtain was opened in Junior Nite for an encore of the Puppet scene disclosing the stage crew in the process of dismantling the scenery? Also in Junior Nite—Alen Herman as Hitler? Miggie Hirshberger and Harvey Convery in their excellent Appache Dance? Marshall Rothen and Kathryn Pohlman in The Flitch of Baon? The night we didn't have our Junior Prom? John Harvey's excellent portrayal of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice ? Major Imlay's humorous and enter- taining talk on Securities? • Bob Saber's singing in Bon Voy- age ? Prohibition? Your first impression of the school? Harvey Convery acting bashful in front of the opposite sex? (Neither do we!) How Joe Stella nearly lost his highly prized N during his first few weeks at Columbia? H. Jones' sparkling, shocking assembly on electricity? Miss Vale's talk on Spain? That except for the work of the Central Committee composed of we would not have had this Mirror. THE ART OF PRINTING The invention of printing from movable types, made in Holland near the middle of the fifteenth century, was the most signifi- cant invention of civilized man. The priceless jewel of knowledge, which for centuries could be the possession of only a privileged few, was made available to all by the development of printing. During the last five centuries printing has progressed not only as the spreader and preserver of knowledge and culture, but also as the finest of the graphic arts.
