'f Q - A NEW ERA . ellis? It is a Monday morning. From the halls of Columbia City Joint High School can be heard the clicking of thirty electric typewriters as advanced typists prepare their lessonsg the odor of sulfur floats from the chemistry room where Mr. Fleck is assisting in the preparation of a Science Fair project. Mr. Duffield's voice is heard as he dictates business letters to eighteen novice stenographersg silence prevails in a senior English class while each student deeply concentrates upon his novel in the special Reading Accelera- tion Course. Speech students re-live their orations through the use of a tape recorder, and a language class increases its knowledge of verb conjugations through the use of flash cards and records. As we walk past room 38, we notice all desks filled but one -- that student is acting as a page in the Indiana General Assembly and will report tomorrow to his civics class. As we approach the music wing our hearts swell as we hear the band expound with The Song of Jupiter in practice for a concert. Nearing the auditorium we hear the drarnatics class rehearsing a play and the shrill screams of a gir1s'physical education class playing basketball in the gymnasium. These sounds signify the beginning of a new concept in educational methods. They are the sounds of progress and efficiency built into our education system through the cooperation of our community in specu- lating, planning, fimd-raising, and finally constructing. It is to our parents, teachers, Superintendent Dr. Glenn, the Board of Control, and the architect, that we sincerely express our thanks for the increase in our educational opportunities by the erection of the new Columbia City Joint High SchooL We, the staff of the 1959 Columbian, invite you as the builders of our education to turn the pages of this book and be witness to the opening of a new Era in the history of Columbia City Joint High SchooL...
