Even after school had been dismissed for summer vaca- 1 the cries of guide right could be heard as upperclass- n began toughening the inexperienced members of their ranks The Golden Eagle Band, proud of its name and past zomplishments, achieved its aims through the hard work of director, Mr. Robert Sharpe. 'I'he band's summer agenda luded the PeonyF estival inVan Wert, Ohio, and the Shriners md Encampment Parade in Indianapolis. Literally drenched with mosquito repellant, the band the season's first game at DeVol Field. In September the d scored a second place rating among the competition in the ffton Street Fair and participated in the spectacular Mass nd Day at Purdue University. Q O The 1959 concert band season began with the election of officers. Vance Brown was chosen Captain, the others were: Dennis Souder, lst Lieutenant of Stage, ,T im Feit, Sergeant of Stage, Jean Bechtold, lst Lieutenant of Library, Linda Murbach, 2nd Lieutenant of Libraryg Judy Will, Lieutenant of Meritsg KenlynnSimon, Lieutenant of the Scrapbook. For the second consecutive year the band received the esteem of appearing in FIRST CHAIR OF AMERICA, a national yearbook honoring the first chair members of the nation's finest bands. A band, to receive this privi- lege, must have attained high standards and must be re- commended by a board composed of high school and college instructors. Uninterrupted preparation was made for the first concert of the season, which was held on the first of F ebruary. Many from the band were entered in the solo and ensemble contest at Harrison Hill in Fort Wayne on February seventh. Those who received first division rat- ings went to the state contest at Indianapolis two weeks later. These contests are held to further the experience and technique of the player and ultimately influence the over-all sound of the band. The next month was devoted to the preparation of a one-day tour to Converse, Hartford City, and South Whitley on the third of April. Two days later a spring concert was held in our auditoritun. The climax of the concert year came with two events. The first was the state band contest inSouth Bend on the eighteenth of April. The annual Pops concert followed on May twelfth. Each member was aware of his share of respon- sibility. But the reward came when the band finally acquired the goals it had been striving for throughout the year. 25
