FRESHMEN . . l959 'f Q - A NEW ERA . ellis? It is a Monday morning. From the halls of Columbia City Joint High School can be heard the clicking of thirty electric typewriters as advanced typists prepare their lessonsg the odor of sulfur floats from the chemistry room where Mr. Fleck is assisting in the preparation of a Science Fair project. Mr. Duffield's voice is heard as he dictates business letters to eighteen novice stenographersg silence prevails in a senior English class while each student deeply concentrates upon his novel in the special Reading Accelera- tion Course. Speech students re-live their orations through the use of a tape recorder, and a language class increases its knowledge of verb conjugations through the use of flash cards and records. As we walk past room 38, we notice all desks filled but one -- that student is acting as a page in the Indiana General Assembly and will report tomorrow to his civics class. As we approach the music wing our hearts swell as we hear the band expound with The Song of Jupiter in practice for a concert. Nearing the auditorium we hear the drarnatics class rehearsing a play and the shrill screams of a gir1s'physical education class playing basketball in the gymnasium. These sounds signify the beginning of a new concept in educational methods. They are the sounds of progress and efficiency built into our education system through the cooperation of our community in specu- lating, planning, fimd-raising, and finally constructing. It is to our parents, teachers, Superintendent Dr. Glenn, the Board of Control, and the architect, that we sincerely express our thanks for the increase in our educational opportunities by the erection of the new Columbia City Joint High SchooL We, the staff of the 1959 Columbian, invite you as the builders of our education to turn the pages of this book and be witness to the opening of a new Era in the history of Columbia City Joint High SchooL... Even after school had been dismissed for summer vaca- 1 the cries of guide right could be heard as upperclass- n began toughening the inexperienced members of their ranks The Golden Eagle Band, proud of its name and past zomplishments, achieved its aims through the hard work of director, Mr. Robert Sharpe. 'I'he band's summer agenda luded the PeonyF estival inVan Wert, Ohio, and the Shriners md Encampment Parade in Indianapolis. Literally drenched with mosquito repellant, the band the season's first game at DeVol Field. In September the d scored a second place rating among the competition in the ffton Street Fair and participated in the spectacular Mass nd Day at Purdue University. In October DeVol Field was the scene of color and pag- try as the Band Parents Organization was host to the BOVA marching contest. Here the band placed first in its Lsion and also the highest honor in its class, sweepstakes. H5 NM R KN , X K fi-I in it . Vance Brown was chosen Captain, the others were: Dennis Souder, lst Lieutenant of Stage, ,T im Feit, Sergeant of Stage, Jean Bechtold, lst Lieutenant of Library, Linda Murbach, 2nd Lieutenant of Libraryg Judy Will, Lieutenant of Meritsg KenlynnSimon, Lieutenant of the Scrapbook. For the second consecutive year the band received the esteem of appearing in FIRST CHAIR OF AMERICA, a national yearbook honoring the first chair members of the nation's finest bands. A band, to receive this privi- lege, must have attained high standards and must be re- commended by a board composed of high school and college instructors. Uninterrupted preparation was made for the first concert of the season, which was held on the first of F ebruary. Many from the band were entered in the solo and ensemble contest at Harrison Hill in Fort Wayne on February seventh. Those who received first division rat- ings went to the state contest at Indianapolis two weeks later. These contests are held to further the experience and technique of the player and ultimately influence the over-all sound of the band. The next month was devoted to the preparation of a one-day tour to Converse, Hartford City, and South Whitley on the third of April. Two days later a spring concert was held in our auditoritun. The climax of the concert year came with two events. The first was the state band contest inSouth Bend on the eighteenth of April. The annual Pops concert followed on May twelfth. Each member was aware of his share of respon- sibility. But the reward came when the band finally acquired the goals it had been striving for throughout the year. 25 49 FRONT ROW: Mrs. Munns, Director, Sharon O'Brien, Linda Sooy, Sharon Scott, Sandra Hilligoss. CHOIR AND CHORUS P roud could be the word used to describe the way we felt when we saw our beautiful new choir room and auditorium. The annual Christmas concert with Song of Christmas, and selections from The Music Man in our spring concert, were moments that helped fill our first year in the new school with many musical highlights. The choir was divided into two main sections this year: the main choir was composed of juniors, seniors, and several sophomore boys, the chorus was made up of freshmen and sophomores. There were small ensembles including a boys triple quartet, a junior-senior girls sextet, and a sophomore girls triple trio. Since choir became a solid subject this year, there were daily vocal exercises, sight reading practice, and music appreciation studies. To raise money for cleaning the robes and various other expenses, the choir and chorus sponsored a dance, The Autumn WhirL The officers of the choir were: Barbara Hood, secretary, Barry Hurtt, robe master, Elizabeth Walker, librarian, Bill Orr, stage manager. The officers for chorus were: Penny Deutsch, secretary, Jane Hockemeyer, librariang John Travelbee, robe masterg and Bob Koch, stage manager. Through the patient, careful direction of Mrs. Munns and through the enthusiasm shown by the choir and chorus members, our school has a choir of which it can truly be proud. Sponsored by Miss Lois Walter, this society performed many services to live up to its motto, Others. Needy families were cheered at Thanks- giving by baskets of food prepared and delivered by Sunshine committees. As was customary, the girls helped bring the yuletide spirit to school by decorating a Christmas tree in the main hall. All 171 members contributed their time and effort to the purpose of the Sunshine Society, making it an invaluable club. L. Argerbright, B. Eckert, C. Hill, G. Panula. THIRD ROW: C. Hollingsworth, L. OFFICERS: Bill Pettigrew, presidentg Garry Lamle, secretaryg Gaillagger, reporterg,TayKnisely, treasurerg Jack McCoy, Sentinelg Albert Esterline, vice-president. Mr. Leon Alter, sponsor of the Future Farmers of America. 30 While the thirty-one year old Future Farmers club kept its tradition of leadership and cooperation, something new was added in the way of organization. In order to accomplish the major goal of F.F.A., that of cultivating qualities of leadership in the group, the 85 members were divided into two parts. One was comprised of all sophomore, junior, and senior F.F.A.'s, and the other was comprised of 35 freshmen called Green Hands. Each division elected its own president and officers. President of the Future Farmers was William Pettigrewg president of the Green Hands was Larry Clark. The two divisions operated nearly as one, but provided more offices and therefore greater opportunity to master the processes of parliamentary procedure, another object of the club. There was competition between the two groups in the way of speech contests and essay contests. The more seasoned group ofFuture Farmers helped the Green Hands carry on. Something else was new for Chapter Five of the Future Farmers of America because of its more than doubled membership: it had two advisers instead of one. They are Mr. Leon Alter, who has directed the club for the past eighteen years, and Mr. William C. Wilder, a new Agriculture teacher. The club was very active this year, starting off withafarm safety campaign for which they made posters and inspected farm machinery. This was the first item on their Program of Work . Later oncame the F.F.A.-F.H.A. skating party. Besides growing and harvesting forty acres of corn, they also furnished judging committees for other groups of farm youths. ll FUTURE HOMEMAKERS of AMERICA The home economic department provided a modern living and dining room area for the practical practice of better homemaking. Seated here in the living room area are, Left to Right: Gladys I-Ierbst, Sue Samuels, Sarah Binkley, and Sharon Raupfer. For the first time in the history of our school, the Future Homemakers of America this year became an honor club by meeting the standards established by the national organization. To attain this goal, in accordance with the national organization's standards, a club must plan and direct its program each month in relation to the five sub goals pertaining to the overall goal, to improve personal family and local world-wide community living. In carrying out the monthly goals of becoming better citizens, irnprovinghuman and world-wide relations, broadening spiritual values, recognizing the values of education for marriage and a career, our F.H.A. was kept busy with many activities. An officers training conference, a home economics tea in Fort Wayne for officers and sponsors, and an evening of caroling and 32 a spiritual program cl.imaxed with Christmas gifts for the Salvation Army in December, supplemented the regular meetings the first semester. In January we enjoyed an ice skating party with the Future Farmers of America as guests, a bake sale, a college speaker, and numerous activities during National F.H.A. week paved the way to the big May event, an elaborate banquet in honor of the seniors. Members leading this active club were Sharon Fisher, presidentg Sandra Maley, vice-president, Janice Deutsch, secretaryg Elizabeth Walker, treasurer, Mary Snyder, editor, Donna Harl, historian, Janet Nix, recrea- tion leaderg.Tudy Ummel, parliamentariang Shir1eyPfeiffer, project chairman. Gathering the news and writing the features was a 22-member staff. Miss Glois Schrader of the faculty advised the editor and staff. The production crew put the paper out every Friday using the new equipment installed in the Eagle's new quarters. Library Aides: Dottie Erne, Alice Wiedenhoeft, and Carol Sievers are pic- tured with Miss Stultz, Librarian. LIBRARY AIDES AND GUIDANCE SECRETARIES The Library Aides shelved books, mended books, and helped Miss Stultz withthenever-ending work there is to do in a library. Carol was a D.O. student, and Dotty and Alice were volunteer helpers during their free periods. The GuidanceOffice secretaries, mostly seniors, were selected by Mr. King and the instructors in the Commercial Department. Their ability in typing, shorthand, and office practice was considered, and they were given the opportunity to gain valuable experience working in the office. Assisting in the Guidance Office as secretaries were: Seated, Sharon O'Brien and SusanNix. Standing, Donna Sullivan, Sharon Jones, Marilyn Hire, Linda Putman, and Nancy Cormany. COLUM BIAN STAFFS Pictured here left to rightare:Susan Smith, Assistant Editorg William Jones, Photographerg and Linda Daseler, Editor. Exhaustion - that's the only word that described the condition of the Columbian staffs after the Columbian had finally been sent to the publisher. A lot of work goes into the production of the yearbook. In the first place, enough annuals had to be sold to keep the project operating in the black. The business staff, headed by John Grant, made posters, paraded in the halls wearing sandwich boards, and mailed over 300 letters to businessmen of Columbia City for sub- scriptions and solicitations. Not that working on the Columbian isn't fun, but it requires the sacrifice of many after-school hours of hard work and concentration. It was with pride that this year's editorial staff worked diligently to make this Golden Anniversary Yearbook the best ever. Miss Cotterly, the sponsor, with the editors, were always on hand to help the staff as they designed, drew, created, criticized, wrote, and finally finished the record of a full and eventful school year. Both staffs constantly worked with the desire to make this, the first Columbian to be published from the new school, one that would be treasured for years by those who shared the experiences written between its golden covers. RESERVES STRIVE TO BECOME LETTERMEN With the new football field yet to be laid out near the high school, the squad practiced and played all home games at DevolField. The season began with a loss to Nappanee, but we regained hope at our second game at Concordia, which ended in a tie.Fiery action was seen against Decatur, but our one-point victory was surpassed by the more climactic results against our greatest conference foes, the Warsaw Tigers. Despite rain, the Eagles returned to Columbia City that night with a 18-'7 victory and fans filled with pride. Turnout among fans was exceptional this year. Next year we hope for an even greater backing and a winning season. The coach, Richard Crampton, after a football season had started, stated the team gave everything they had, and the games they lost were not lost because of lack of effort but lack of experience. Honorable mention should be made to the busiest members of the team, the managers: Bob Ernst, Dallas Coyle, John Travelbee, and Lowell Pequignot. Terry Ward waits for his chance to carry l the ball. The Eagles played the first year in the new gym with a vengeance, carrying on an inspired kind of game that few opposing teams such as Bluffton, New Haven, Concordia and Nappanee, who defeated C.C. during the '57-'58 season, found themselves trailing when the buzzer ended another fourth period. The Eagles ran away with the Four Way Tourney, defeating the Wolf Lake Wolves 89-63 in the final game. Columbia City lost to Huntington and then proceeded to make up for the loss by defeating eleven teams in a row. The mighty Eagles' winning streak was broken by the Fort Wayne Central Catholic team. This game with Central Catholic was a real thriller - it was tied nineteen times, and the Eagles held the lead in several places. Columbia City lost, but Central Catholic left Bishop Luers Gym with a man-sized respect for the Eagles. It was fitting that the maroon and gold team should make the '58-'59 season the beginning of many tritunphsg for the team was coming from a new school, practicing and playing in a new 5500.000 gymnasium, and was being instructed by a new coach who just was not used to being defeated. The Eagles under Mr. Hammel found themselves rated number one in the area according to the Fort Wayne News Sentinel's ratings at the end of the season, and were ranked that way 8 out of the 13 weeks that the ratings were carried. This same paper also selected Mr.l-lammel as Area Coach of the Year. This confidence in Columbia City was well founded as sectional and regional tournament play showed. In the sectional no one came closer than eleven points to beating the Eagles, and in the regional Columbia City registered an upset victory over Elkart with a 63-46 win. More glory carrie to the Maroon and Gold when the North-eastern Indiana Conference trophy was presented to them. The Eagles were undefeated in the NEIC. The reserves showed they had what it takes, too. They easily walked off with the B team tournament at Manchester, and missed having a perfect record by only one game. So, with the glories of the '58-'59 season to take pride in for years to come, and the promise of just as victorious a season for 1959 and 1960, it may be said that Columbia City's fans were very well satisfied, indeed. 5.1 5 ' 9 ... if Ss K 3 , E .:,, K 3 Q ., X 5 gli? gi' 5 1 I ls 3 Q 'Q 6.gQl?! , .A , -pfwfng A ,gfvsysf , 4 iq. Continuing the enthusiasm of the previous activities this year, the spring sports of track, golf, and baseball were well supported by both spectators and' participants. The track team, with its new coach, Ray Moore, was in top shape for its thirteen meets that were scheduled for this year. The first meet was held on the first of April, and the team was well prepared with nine returning lettermen and many other enthusiastic students, who participated in the running and field events. Many of the lettermen were those who came from Coesse and Jefferson Center. With three returning lettermen, several others with previous experience, and several novices, the golf team, under coach King, faced its competition. This year the team consisted of a large number of freshmen and sophomores in relation to last year's team. After playing several teams, a conference meet was held at Decatur on May 2. At the end of the year letters were presented to the four outstanding players. After getting third place in the NEIC last year, the baseball team returned to its fifth year of playing. With the admission of Angola, the Conference was re- organized and each team played the other teams only once. The schedule this year included such teams as Warsaw, Concordia, Kendalville, Bluffton, New Haven, Decatur, Angola, and Wolf Lake. This year's team was hard hitting with sixteen returning lettermen. Both the track and baseball teams are looking forward to a new field beside the new school. Its con- struction is scheduled to begin later this year. 69 GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Hurry! As we, the 1959 graduating class of Columbia City Joint High School, look back over the last four years, we remember many things. We remember all the people, the classes, and the experiences which played such important parts in our high school days. we recall our eventful year as freshmen when, although we were made to feel very lowly, we had the time of our lives being slaves of the mighty seniors. Our memories include our sophomore year during which we sponsored the King Swing, decorated the audi- torium for Baccalaureate and Commencement, and buckled down to earn funds for the following year's reception. In our junior year, our efforts in selling candy, cookies, and magazines were rewarded by an unforgettable all-night prom. We left the old C.CJ .1-LS. building to eventually become the first class to graduate from our new and modern school. Beginning our senior year, we welcomed students from Coesse and Tefferson Center. making our class membership a grand total of one hundred thirty-six. We must admit that in our first few weeks as seniors we were not the dignified and stately people we had hoped to be. Instead, we wandered about the unmarred building as confused as the underclassmen. This was only a temporary condition, however. We soon became accustomed to the new routine, elected class officers, and settled down for our last year in high school. It was clirnaxed'by the senior play, the reception, and graduation. There have been many people who have helped to guide us through the last four years. We are grateful to all of them, especially our loyal and understanding sponsors, Miss Carver and Mr. Shipman. Now it is time to stop reminiscing and look to tomorrow. We must step forward into the future and, as the 1959 graduating class of Columbia City Joint High School, we are proud to announce that we are ready. .T ADAMS H. Just once in a blue moon do wehave such a dance! Cardboard blue moons in classrooms, cafeteria, and halls attracted every student's attention at our big junior dance in January, and resulted in a crowded dance hall the evening of the Nappanee basketball game. The Kick-Off Get-Acquainted dance was successfully sponsored by us in September, and considerably boosted the balance of our treasury. The selling of magazines highlighted the fund-raising campaign, and we enthusiastic juniors exceeded our 253,000 goal by 3210. Sylvia Dygert received a hi-fi set for selling the largest number of magazine subscriptions, and Jody Walter was awarded a wrist watch for being the second high seller. As March approached, we realized our responsibility of providing a junior-senior reception, com- mittees were appointed, and we plunged into our work with the usual anticipation of the best reception ever. To lead our class we elected David Mowrey, with John Grant as his assistant. Judy Hauser and Judy Ummel served as secretary and treasurer, respectively. 104 Carl Addis Mary Aker Lynn Argerbright Jim Alter Esther Auer Jean Bechtold Linda Bennett Barbara Berwert Edward Bierbaum Mike Blain Bonnie Blowers Judy Bowie Paul Brendel Ola Mae Brookover Wayne Brueckner Ed Bunger Becky Cable Bob Chandler Sandra Chapman Roger Clark Wayne Clark Karen Clawson Bob Cole Mike Collier Judy Corbin Janelle Conner Carolyn Cooper Dallas Coyle Pat Cramer Gene Curless Charles Davis David Doudt Mary Downing Sylvia Dygert Dick Egolf .. , ,M 4, 4: 41 .i 1 up Z , 1 , an Q 4. The Sophomore class, with 185 members, had the schoo1's largest enrollment. We entered our new school glad that we weren't freshmen, but we were as confused as any greenie those first few weeks. We elected Doug Snyder president of the class, and ,T im Fleck vice-president. Barbara Eckert was again voted secretary, and ,ToAnna Putman was our treasurer. With the help of our sponsors, Miss Adkins , and Mr. Drew, we planned projects to earn money, realizing that next year is our reception. The start of our activities was the Victory Ball, held after the last home football game. J ack Phillips and Linda Reese reigned as Duke and Duchess of the dance. Between games of the Holiday Tourney in January, we sponsored a sock hop in the gym. Tradition at CCIHS required that we supply flowers for Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises. The conclusion of our activities was a sophomore class party held in the spring. 110 A'Hearn, Edward Alles, Marilyn Argerbright, Lydia Babb, Michael Baker, Jerry Barnes, Lynn Barnes, Mike Barnett, Lois Bauer, Raymond Beard, Torn Beck, Jerry Begue, Gerald Bevington, Sandra Binkley, Sue Blaugh, Rosalyn Bloom, Lidian Bridegam, Aletha Brown, Alyce Buckles, Barbara Burkitt, Andrea M , . We realized that it was an honor and we were truly proud of being the first freshman class to enter the new high school. Yet, because of the new school and students, we experienced more uncertainty than the freshman classes of the past. The new school and students, freshman day with its gaiety and hula hoop contest and silly hats, the mad rush to makeit to our next class and yet try to get our lockers open with those tricky combinations, are but a few things that will be remembered about this first year. The Sno-Ball , the first dance our class sponsored also highlighted the year. Bob Smith was elected president and Tim Thomson held the office of 'vice-president. Susan Bates was our secretary and Mary Byers our treasurer, Miss Boyd and Mr. Luther were our sponsors. When we return next year with more poise and confidence, we will hold our heads higher and work harder, for we will no longer feel the reservations we experienced last fall as green freshmen in a new high school.
