STATISTICS OF THE CLASS OF 1940 Four years ago one hundred twelve puplls f1rst entered the halls of Columbla Clty l-hgh School We had ambrtrons that we m1ght be the frrst graduatrng class to have one hundred members but we fatled by f1ve to reach that goal We are however the largest graauatlng class thus far E1ghty three members rema1n of our or1g1nal members the other twelve have come to us durmg our hlgh school career One out of our class has been enrolled rn ten dlfferent schools durmg hrs twelve years of school attendance Of those who dropped out along the way several were marrted some moved away a few wanted to do some other land of work and one member has dred It mrght be mterestmg to look at some of the facts pertamtng to our class Our tallest boy looks down upon the world from hts herght of srx feet three and three quarter mches our shortest has to stretch hrmself to reach the herght of four feet ten and one half rnches Our monster of werght tlps the scales wtth two hundred th1rty flve pounds whlle our llghtest member IS competlng w1th the featherwetghts w1th only nmety four pounds Slnce the grrls all hope to be called the lrttle woman 1n the near future they declme to glve any def1n1te 1nformat1on about hetght and welght There are f1fty seven puptls w1th blue eyes twenty three w1th brown eyes flve wrth green eyes flsnt that a s1gn of 1ealousy'9J and the remamder offer only vague mformatron lrke grayrsh or occasronally black The ma1or1ty of students rn our class have brown halr brunettes are next 1n number whrle we have a few declded blondes and red heads Talk about feet one boy who wears SIZE twelve and one half mud boats IS made ashamed by a gtrl who teeters on srze four and one half shoes She would lrke to compete w1th Crnderella We have one member who 1S twenty one years old and proud that he 1S now a voter whrle a few young uns w1ll be only seventeen when they are graduated and two only s1Xteen Members of the class acclarm teachers and gum smackers as the1r pet peeve but a few non conformtsts 11st d1sl1kes rangmg from alarm clocks to cold butter Several w1sh to be farmers after they graduate a few w1ll conttnue the work 1n grocery stores and f1ll1ng stattons whrch has supplled spendlng money durmg htgh school and many plan to contlnue thetr educatlon by attendlng busmess school college or other rnstttutrons of further tra1n1ng Votes for the favonte class tn school showed that agnculture and shop were most llked by the boys and home economtcs and mathematlcs by the gtrls As to pol1t1cs we say noth1ng Thls IS a campalgn year and most of our members say We are on the fence We farled too to get a def1n1te opmton about who they thought would be the next prestdent lt seems as though Gracte Allen and even Bob Burns have a good chance accordmg to some members of the class As to rel1g1on our class ts proud to say that we have members of a great varrety of denommatrons and creeds Not all are church members but all do hope to be worth whtle crtrzens Frfteen semors belong 1n band mneteen are rn chorr seven tn FFA twenty three 1n Sunshlne Soclety s1x 1n Booster Club twenty fxve on the Eagle staff seven on the Annual Board thtrty f1ve rn Commerclal Club and a great num ber of boys have partrctpated rn football track and basketball Out of the ntnety frve only twenty frve have ever ndden rn an arrplane A greater number forty have rldden on a tram, and a much larger number f1fty drlve a car Page 29 1 , . . 1 , , . VALEDICTORY WILLIAM L DAVIS Many tunes man IS faced w1th the task of puttlng 1nto words the feehngs of the soul Thls IS often a very drfflcult act to accomphsh as upon certarn occas1ons we fmd our emotrons of such a varlety that mere words are power less to express all that our hearts would say It becomes my prlvrlege to speak for the class of 1940 and to attempt to convey to our teachers relat1ves and fr1end the emotlons we feel at thrs trme We realxze that th1s IS not the end of our educatlonal career, rather the start of that fuller educatlon whlch comes only w1th the varled experrences of hfe rtself but we are aware too that 1t marks the attamment of a goal for whtch we have been a1m1ng for the last twelve years Naturally we gam a thr1ll of pr1de rn th1s accomphshment Hrgh among our many feehngs today IS one of smcere gratxtude to the teachers who have by thelr energy and patlence led us to our present honored posftton We stncerely thank them for the1r gurdance and splendld example and shall not forget the helpmg hand they have so many trmes extended to us through these format1ve years The least that we can do IS to pledge that 1n future years we shall attempt to govern our lrves rn such a manner that they may feel somewhat repa1d for the1r efforts 1n our behalf The understandlng and encouragement glven us by our parents and rn many cases the sacr1f1ces that they have made for us shall not go unheralded at thrs trme for we fully apprecrate all thls as well W1th these exercrses we wrlte fmt to our career as students of Columbra Crty Hrgh School and as we thmk of thrs we are sens1ble of a feelmg of deep regret We hold nothrng dearer to us at thls ttme than the comradeshtp here formed whrch w1ll be chenshed throughout our l1ves As we take our separate paths and leave these halls lt IS w1th the realrzatfon that the best of frlendshrps cannot survlve tlme Never agaln shall we be as close to these fr1ends of our youth as we are tomght l am remfnded of the anclent x ng who commlssroned hrs wxse men to prepare a sentence that would bc 'rue and apphcable under all condlttons and 1n all places After weeks ot study these w1se men returned to thelr soverelgn wrth thls thought Thls too shall pass away Realrztng the truth of th1s phllosophy we accept our fatel Although our hlgh school days and our hrgh school frrendshlps w1ll pass they go not fnto obl1v1on but mto those secret places of our hearts where they w1ll remarn always cherrshed and re memberedl So tomght we members of the class of l94U bld farewell to our classmates and teachers but we go wfth hopeful hearts toward the future Page 28 , O . . . 1 1 -I - 1 f 1 , . f 1 . . -rg . . , A -, . . , .. . 1, . . , I . , . 1 1 1 - 1 1 , .
