A Summer on the Mexican Border Last spring while teaehing i11 the Lewistown, Illinois, High Sehool, I re- eeived a summer seholarship at the University of Illinois. Un June ltith I set out for Fhampaign to take advantage of this seholarship and had reaehed I'rawfordsville, Indiana, when I reeeived a telegram informing me that the Na- tional Guard Troops had been ealled out for serviee on the Mexiean Border. I immediately returned home and June 23rd I left for Ft. Benjamin Har- rison. After having remained in Camp there until .Iuly 2nd, the Third In- diana Infantry was ordered to Llano Grande, Texas. All the way to the border we were reeeived with great enthusiasm by the people along the route. My first impression of the Mexieans was not very favorable. While passing through the lower part of Arkansas, I was riding on top of the eaboose. Of eourse from my position, I eould see everything that took plaee on the land- seape. One thing I noticed was a group of Mexieans who were working in the seetion gang. They smiled very friendly while our train was going by but after we had passed, I happened to look around and these same friendly Mexi- eans were shaking their fists at us. When they saw me looking they imniediate- ly dropped tl1eir hands to their sides. We arrived i11 Llano Grande, Texas, on July Ilth being the seeond Regi- ment to arrive there, the Fourth Nebraska being the first. At about eight o'eloek in the morning, we detrained amidst a. terrifie downpour ol' rain. It eontinued to rain for the first three weeks we were in Vamp. To make matters worse we had nothing but the so ealled Pup Tents to sleep in during this time and our rations eonsisted mostly of Rio Grande River water and atmos- phere. My first impressions of the Texas border were, rain, mud, eaetus, tarantulas, seorpions, eentipedes and mosquitoes. I remained with the Indiana troops for three weeks, when I reeeived orders to take eharge of Bakery Vompany No. 1, Ifnited States Army. whieh was to be loeated at Llano Grande. The United Army was short of oflieers and they had to detail some lieutenants froln the National Guard to help out and I was the goat in this plaee. We set up our baking ovens one day and the next day we were baking bread. Within a week's time we we1'e baking ten thousand pounds of bread for eaeh day. We supplied Vamp Llano Grande and other ea111ps around there, we furnishing bread for about fifteen thousand men in all. This is rather a large baking day even fora Domestie Seienee elass in the high sehool, don't you think? I remained with the Baking Uompany for about three weeks when I had a ehanee to go with the United States Infantry for training. I took advantage of the ehanee and was attaehed to C'ompany H of the 28th Ii. H. Infantry, loeated at Hidalgo, Texas. Hidalgo is a town whieh has seen better days. It used to be tl1e eounty seat of Hidalgo County, Texas, but the sheriff owned more land around Edinburg and so one night about ten years ago, he moved the eounty seat to that plaee. I am here in the capacity of an extra teacher llliltlff' necessary by the sudden increase of children in the schools this spring. Between Silver Crown and the Columbia River lies Northport, and on the other side of the river there is a sky line of rounded mountains 11ow covered with snow and glinting in the sunshine. From a certain distance up Silver Crown the effect is lovely, but the village itself is in many spots an almost tragic collection of hovels, although good wages are paid the laborers. Around in the mountains all kinds of metals abound. silver, lead a11d gold, and in certain parts manganese. Things are being done here all around. Thousands of acres are planted in orchards farther down the river. Here it can't be done safely until a smoke consumer is put into the smelter, preventing the poisoning of vegetation. There are bridges and roads to be built, and all nature to be conquered. Life is very raw, but very real, and is makes us realize what our ancestors underwent in the beginning of things in Indiana. High courage they must have had, but they also had the fascination of seeing almost overwhelming odds conquered. In every mining town there are masses of ignorant labo1'ers and their children to handle. Most of them are foreigners, scarcely able to speak English, and as the manager of a big farming company near here says, if one is interested i11 settlement work, there is plenty of it here to be done. I am wondering what clubs might be formed in connection with tl1e schools t.o help them become good American citizens, which, to tell the truth, they seem most anxious to do. Fate has played queer pranks here. At a dancing party recently, I met some people who had lived until a few months ago in one of the tiny cottages, and who now occupy the finest mansion in the town. As a remedy for this condition the present stan' offers, for the consideration of future Annual Boards, the follow- ing suggestion for a more equal distribution of the work. We believe that a more representative book could be obtained by appointing an editor for each separate department. In this way, all the humorous happenings of the year would be handled by a Joke Editor, the cartoons and kodak pictures by an Art Editor, stories and special articles by the Literary Editor, and other depart- ments by special editors may be required. While each of these editors would be responsible for his own particular department he would be under the Editor- in-chief. Thus the work of the Editor-in-chief would be greatfy alleviated and the Annual would be made more than ever a students year-book. For the past two years, instead of the Alumni Department a Reminiscence Department has been conducted by the Columbian Board. In this Depart- ment articles written by the first graduates of the schools have appeared. In last year's Columbian Dr. David S. Linvill, of the class of '81, contributed a comprehensive history of the Columbia City Schools from their beginning in the year 1845 to 1881. This year Mr. H. D. McLallen, of the class of '87, has compiled a history of the school during the years '84 to '87, Since this Reminiscence Department has been successfully conducted thru three successive Columbians we hope that it will become a permanent feature. This change in the Department has met with the hearty approval of many of the Alumni. This year we have also asked some of the more recent graduates to write for the Columbian either about their present work or about some interesting incident in their High School career. We trust that these articles will serve not only as a part of the Reminiseence Department but will also keep alive the good fellowship spirit of the Columbia City High School and bind more closely together the old and young Alumni as well as the patrons. Hea.ve11 help the poor individual who 'tgcts peeved at something about him- self which may have drifted into this book of conglomerations. Quite naturally we couldn't get up an Annual about the C. C. H. S. without referring to the eccentricities of some of its students. But it has all been done good-naturedly and in the spirit of fun, please take it so. Also-pray be original, don't cuss the editors. Without the co-operation of the High School students and Faculty the An- nual Board itself could ncver have compiled this 'tColumbian, so we wish to thank all those who so kindly helped us. Through contributions to the Editors Box we have received ma11y good jokes, poems and kodak pictures, which have all been tru'y appreciated.
