The effects of the new Colorado state law concerning the legal drinking age had an impact on the C.C. Cam- pus during the 1988-89 school year. Only those students born before July 30 1969, could legally purchase and consume alcohol. This meant that the majority of first year students could not participate in the drinking of alcohol. . Because of the change, the col- lege administration, for the first time in history, made the freshmen dorm, Slocum, a dry dorm. The new rule stated that no alcohol of any kind could be allowed into the residence hall. Not only did the new law have an effect on the freshthings, the upper clasfolks had to readjust too. I.D.'s were checked at every party, and only college- trained servers were allowed to serve at. parties. Will C.C. ever be the same again? CC saw its most fundamental change this year with the implementation of the highly controversial Eight-Block Plan. 'Some students were outraged that they received a shorter school year while paying an increase of over seven percent in tuition. Others appreciated the increased amount of credit given per block as well as the extra two weeks allowed for summer job hunting. The Eight-Block Plan was suggested by faculty as a way to give them more research time and to lighten heavy class loads. The Board of Trustees approved the Plan in 1988, to be implemented in the 88-89 school year, with the reinstatement of the tradition of the Winter Symposium. On October 7, 1988, a dedication ceremony was held in honor of the new science hall. The Friday morning symposium covered the topics of AIDS, superconductivity, and supernovas. As the year-long construction was finally brought out to the Colorado College Community, the students who used the facility were treated to a greatly expanded, beautifully efficient place in which to study. In addition, on two Wednesdays, October 12 and October 19, students and faculty were invited to view the recent close encounter with Mars and some other cosmic wonders , through the science hall's new telescope and observatory. - o JjI i i :i .'- .: M - : : :' -2 ' E ™ MOLSON iiill
