Jameel Webb After four years here at CC, I've discoven that Old Chicagos makes really good food Loomis is a really ucky place to live and I think I've discovered the meaning 71 9red { The effects of the new Colorado state law concerning the legal drinking age had an impact on the C.C. Cam- pus during the 1988-89 school year. Only those students born before July 30 1969, could legally purchase and consume alcohol. This meant that the majority of first year students could not participate in the drinking of alcohol. . Because of the change, the col- lege administration, for the first time in history, made the freshmen dorm, Slocum, a dry dorm. The new rule stated that no alcohol of any kind could be allowed into the residence hall. Not only did the new law have an effect on the freshthings, the upper clasfolks had to readjust too. I.D.'s were checked at every party, and only college- trained servers were allowed to serve at. parties. Will C.C. ever be the same again? CC saw its most fundamental change this year with the implementation of the highly controversial Eight-Block Plan. 'Some students were outraged that they received a shorter school year while paying an increase of over seven percent in tuition. Others appreciated the increased amount of credit given per block as well as the extra two weeks allowed for summer job hunting. The Eight-Block Plan was suggested by faculty as a way to give them more research time and to lighten heavy class loads. The Board of Trustees approved the Plan in 1988, to be implemented in the 88-89 school year, with the reinstatement of the tradition of the Winter Symposium. On October 7, 1988, a dedication ceremony was held in honor of the new science hall. The Friday morning symposium covered the topics of AIDS, superconductivity, and supernovas. As the year-long construction was finally brought out to the Colorado College Community, the students who used the facility were treated to a greatly expanded, beautifully efficient place in which to study. In addition, on two Wednesdays, October 12 and October 19, students and faculty were invited to view the recent close encounter with Mars and some other cosmic wonders , through the science hall's new telescope and observatory. - o JjI i i :i .'- .: M - : : :' -2 ' E ™ MOLSON iiill vAft Anonymous $t N ake £ place secluded in the beauty of mountains .w CTi h i,m! standards of a liberal arts education to recognize relevance in irrelevancy. The Baca Campus, near Crestone, Colorado, is yet another example of our outward movement into the community and the region around us. Many classes this year spent time in Baca's incredible surroundings, opening students' minds to the emotions and energies of the Southwest. At Baca the mood was quiet and contemplative; the seminar room housed only a fraction of the knowledge to be gained in this spiritual and phyisical world. In the immediate area, students discovered the Lindisfarne potters, a Buddhist temple, a Hindu Ashram, a Catholic monastery, many hiking and mountain-biking trails, and a kindred town, all full of friendly folk. Time spent at Baca held different beauties for all who partook; the history, the colors of the mountains, and the cultures of the people in this diverse area gave common feelings of delight in the experience and regret in departure. In our design, we have attempted to interpret the distinct flow of CC; that is, the tendencies of students to exist in certain spheres, rather than in strictly demarcated sections . We feel that those kind of divisions would not be truly indicative of our way of life. I trust that the 1989 Nugget will present to you a clear reminder of CC's Peak Experience. It's members volunteered their time to make the rela- tionship between C.C. and the Colorado Springs com- munity the best possible. One of the principal tasks taken on by Circle K was assisting the trainers at Acts 19:11, a therapeutic horse-riding ranch for handi- capped children. The members also supported Heiffer International, an organization which provided food, seed, and tools for the impoverished people in America and around the world. Circle K was a busy organiza- tion throughout the year, volunteering time in hospitals, working for Silver Key, participating in the March of Dimes Walk-A-Thon, and assisting with the Special Olympics in April. Circle K is the college-level affiliate of the Kiwanis Club International. Rebecca Knight, the 1988-89 BACCHUS President clearly stated the BACCHUS philosophy when she said, Students play a uniquely effective role in en- couraging their peers to co nsider and develop respon- sible habits and attitudes in their behavior toward the use and non-use of alcoholic beverages. BACCHUS, a national student organization (Boost Alcohol Con- sciousness Concerning the Health of University Stu- dents), advocated informed, independent decision- making and respect concerning the choices made by college students concerning the use of alcohol. The main activity sponsored by BACCHUS was national Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, which ran Octo- ber 16-22, 1988. the principal events of NCAAW in- cluded a Balloon Launch to salute Colorado's sober drivers, a Drink With the Deans Coffeehouse, a Mocktail designing contest, a 5K Fun Run, and train- for beertending and BACCHUS Ban ... the milkman left me a note yesterday Get out of town by noon, You're coming on way too soon And besides that We never liked you anyway ... ENACT K.E.E.P., Kare Enough about Elderly People, was an on-campus organization committed to providing companionship and performing a variety of services for many elderly people in the Colorado Springs community. In addition to working with elderly people, K.E.E.P. promoted awareness of the issues affecting the elderly through a series of lectures addressing the concerns of the aged. ENACT provided students with the opportunity to work together addressing C.C.'s environmental con- cerns. According to Sarah Blexrud, one of the organi- zation's co-chairs, this end was accomplished through the means of education and direct action. ENACT had a number of projects which ran throughout the year, two of which were the recycling services and awareness campaigns to reduce resource waste within the C.C. community. ENACT is an acronym for Environmental Action. tr «s %J 125 H ■ ■ - r: br crvxce OrqtmzAiion Writing Center The Writing Center, staffed by thirteen students and a full-time director, provided assistance for students and faculty writing papers, theses, and proposals. The student tutors, who took a training course prior to the beginning of the academic year, were available to help with papers at any stage of completion, and their intent was to have students improve their writing skills with every visit to the center. They also provided assistance with the campus word processing programs and the Writer's Workbench analysis program. Volunteer Action Volunteer Action celebrated another successful year in 1988. The organization was created to assist elementary-age students recommended for the pro- gram by social workers and school administrations. Each college volunteer spent approximately two hours per month participating in activities with their little sib- lings. Several of the S AA activities included the Legacy Luncheon, the Adopt-A-Student program, Homecoming, a talent show, and Fifty Year Club festivities. The group's principal goal was to arrange to have the 1990 Regional Conference held at C.C. The Student Admissions Representatives, headed by Nanine Wainwright, were responsible for giving tours of the campus to prospective students, providing overnight accomodations for prospectives, and acting as ambassadors to high schools for C.C. The Star Core, made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, went through an active application and interview process in order to be official tour guides and representatives of the school. 127 — o- m m ™ PirecTiveOrqanizJaiotif Extra-Curricular The Extra-Curricular Committee provided activities designed to complement the campu s social climate. The events sponsored by this committee of the Leisure Program included all-campus parties, movie marathons, and events co-sponsored by other students clubs. « Arts Crafts Arts Crafts offered classes and events with the goal of providing constructive, creative ways for students to use their leisure time. The objective of the classes was to create beautiful and useful items while relaxing and having fun. The classes were organized by the Arts Crafts Committee, who also arranged a craft sale and show. The show, held in December, gave students the opportunity to earn money for their work, while promoting interaction between C.C. and the Colorado Springs community. Another show was held in the spring, giving artists the opportunity to exhibit their finest works. The classes offered included pottery, jewelry, weaving, Batik, stained glass, spinning, weaving, knitting, Raku, beading, photography, and papermaking. 128 ■ J A CCCA CCCA was C.C.'s student government body. Comprised of several facets of the college community, the CCCA attempted to coordinate the variety of activities and interests on campus, according to President Bill Porter. The organization, formed of sev- eral committees, served to provide student input for many of the college's policies. These committeed in- cluded: The Committee on Committees, which coordi- nated student involvement in student-faculty commit- tees; the Budget Committee, which allocated student activity funds; the Residential Life and Housing Com- mittee, which assisted the administration with housing policies; the Constitiution Committee, whose members chartered new student organizations on campus; the Food Service Committee, which communicated student opinions for the improvement of the food program at C.C.; the Election Publicity Committee, which coordi- nated all CCCA public relations and elections; and the Student concerns Committee, open to representing student opinions in student government. 129 ■M OrqdnizJtions Livesounds The Livesounds Committee was a fundamental element of the Leisure Program. The committee also funded student activities in the arts. The 1988-89 Great Performers Series in- cluded a wide range of performances, ranging from the Seattle Mime Theatre and Urban Bush Women to Al- lison Eldridge, Cello, and Eliot Fisk, Classical Guitar, to Hakan Hagegard, Baritone, and Jeffrey Kahane, Pi- anist. Each event was widely attended, not only by C.C. students, but by the Colorado Springs community as well. Shove Council The Shove Council provided a forum for students to discuss their philosophical issues, social concerns, and ethical considerations. They provided Sunday services for Christian worship, both non- denominational services in the morning and Catholic masses at night. Finally, the members offered their services to the Colorado Springs community through numerous volunteer activities. j ° ™ °:, $ r -o Black Student Union The Black Student Union's primary objective was to provide a support group for its members on campus. Participants could meet at almost any time to discuss their concerns at C.C. or just to talk. Delores Haines, the Union's chair, also stressed the club's importance in educating the campus community and the BSU members about minority issues, both local and international, as well as Black History and minority leaders in Colorado. BSU sponsored Black History Month in February and was one of several organizations coordinating the Rainbow Jam in November. A.S.I.A. The Association of Students Interested in Asia was made up of both students and faculty, who all shared a common interest in Asia. The goal of the organization was to discuss cultural, political, economic, and scientific aspects of the continent, as well as to promote awareness of Asian issues through a variety of events, which included the Rainbow Jam in November, a number of guest speakers, dance performances, and movies. The group also sponsored Asian Awareness Week and the Asian Film Festival. CCCAA In it's fourth year of activism at C.C., the Colorado College Community Against Apartheid actively sought to engage students in discussion about southern Africa. One of the primary issues addressed by the organization was C.C.'s investments in South Africa. CCCAA sponsored lectures, panel discussions, debates, rallies, letter- writing campaigns, and teach-ins in order to educate the college community of the problems faced in South Africa and to spur political action on campus. 134 _ a5222' WP1 $ : crA vjrc, ,rf CCAP Feminist Collective The Feminist collective set as its primary goal the education of C.C. students concerning women's is- sues. Awareness was the key term, according to Katherine Morris, the organization's representative. The Feminist Collective met weekly, while sponsoring a Women's Support Group in conjunction with several counselors at Boettcher Health Center. The members of the organization also aimed to increase interaction between students and faculty, especially in relation to feminist issues. The Feminist Collective coordinated its efforts with those of several other women's organi- zations to recognize National Women's Week on cam- pus. College Citizens Active for Peace cited its purpose as action. Karen Hixon, the organization's chair, explained, We want to get people (students) moving. CCAP members assisted other peace activist organizations in their activities throughout the year. An active club, CCAP participated in the Colorado Peace Walk, the monthly Rocky Flats Peace Walks, the October Action at Lowry Air Force Base, the actions at the Nevade nuclear weapons testing site, the Walk-A- Thon for El Salvador, the AIDS Walk-A-Thon, and staffed a Rape Crisis Hotline for the Colorado College community. In addition, the members sponsored Central American Awareness Week and publicized the speech by Father Daniel Berrigan presented in the fall. The evening of Novem- ber 8 saw a wide variety of emotions on the C.C. campus. The political tension had grown to be quite heated, as the col- lege community was strongly divided. By the beginning of No- vember, the election had been debated, re-debated, and de- bated the way it should have been. Each decision was dif- ferent, and nobody could really agree on a winner. Everybody just had to wait until the nation made its decision. George Bush was elected to be the forty-first President of the United States, and Dan Quayle, his running mate, was to be the Vice Presi- dent. By the end of the eve- ning, it was clear that George Bush had earned 426 electoral votes to Michael Dukakis' 112: An apparent landslide, but not so comforting to the students who pointed out that Bush and Quayle defeated the Dukakis Bentsen ticket by only a 51 to 49% margin in the popular vote. Perhaps one of the most conclusive statements made by one supporter of the Democratic candidate was, The election has turned me to religion. I will now pray for the health of George Bush daily. On the other hand, a Bush supporter stressed that he, thoroughly believed George Bush would be the 'Education President.' p v£ rought DThe summer of 1988 was marked by the worst drought in 50 years of United States history. The dry, hot weather stretched from Californiato Georgia, and from Canada to Texas. Thirty states declared federal emergencies, and many midwest farmers lost up to 75% of their crops. Many states set rec- ord temperatures during the summer - and continuous weeks of record temperatures. The fire season also began two months early, which many people felt contributed to the fires in Yellowstone National Park which lasted throughout most of the summer. The Mississippi River was at an extremely low level, trapping numerous boats and barges carrying paper, grain, and chemicals to market. The drought was the principal cause of an unac- countable financial loss, which extended from farm subsidies to extensive damages to prop- erty and crops. Benjamin De Mott spoke that afternoon on The Pursuit of Feeling in our society, and on the import of the constructive imagination in this pursuit. The Deamarest Lloyd Memorial Lecturer, Ellen Gilchrist, spoke that evening of intimacy in one of the promi- nent characters in her short stories, Norma Jean. On Tuesday morning, each of Monday's speakers were available for coffee and conversation. Holly Clayson spoke on the topic Images of Intiiamcy during the times of 'Sexual' Plauge: Now and in the 1 9th Century. Annie Dillard enter- tained a full house in Packard Auditoium that morning, read- ing from her Pulitzer Prize winning Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and focusing intently and hu- morously on intimacy with na- ture. Dillard presented the audience poems on aging, dermatology, and the unheard of shortness of snails. Joy Harjo and Angela Jackson read for throngs of students, faculty, and commu- nity members in Tutt Atrium on Friday, bringing to light their perceptions of intimacy in art and in their own poems. Joy Harjo began the reading in herwind-like, chant- ing voice, reminiscent of her Native American background in the Creek tribe. A prayer ended this reading of her time- less poetry. Angela Jackson then commenced to, as one ob- server described it bring the audience to their knees, rolling and laughing with her at the characters she portrayed in her poems, notably [The man with] a white liver he a killin love giver, and Mrs. Sheba Williams, whose voice Jackson assumed to read the piece. Both artists commented on the Symposium on Inti- macy's affect on their thinking in relation to their work; Jackson stated that thinking about the i word had helped her to understand her poetry as an expression of the intimacy in- herent in art. The week con- tinued with East of Eden, di- rected by Eliakazan, La Strada, directed by Fedirco Felline, and Sunday Bloody Sunday, directed by John Schlesinger. The last two films were His Girl Friday, directed by Howard Hawks and My Life as a Dog, directed by Lasse Hallstrom. Eight Colo- rado artiists were invited to present trheir work and views of intimacy: Irene Delka, Luis Eades, Robert Ecker, Sally Elliot, Jill Englebart, Virginia Johnson, Linda Lowry, and Trudy Shelly. The artwork varied from pastel drawings, to miniature photos, to largerthan life oil paintings. Symposium Director Eli Boderman also invited three performing groups. First to perform was Ramanovsky and Phillips, gay singer-songwiters, . Theirtwo hour performance, on Tuesday, January 10, was filled with humorous, touching and frank songs about homo- sexuality. They often had the audience wrapped up in laugh- ter with their little stories about the origins of the songs, and a poll taken during the concert to find out who in the audience have had parents? Perhaps one of the most striking things aboutthemwastheirattire. Ron Ramanovsky wore, for the first half, a black jumpsuit covered with paint splatters, and for the second half, tight black leather pants, a cut-off sleeve sweat- shirt with zippers on the front, and had his black hair spiked. Paul Phillips wore black pants, a black muscle shirt and a dressy white satin, sleeveless, jacket, and around his neck and wrists brilliant diamond chains and bracelets. In one ear he wore a long hooped diamond chain earring. For the second half he wore a black and white mini dress with a white Bolo jacket. The performance by Weeden, Finkle and Fay on Thursday began with their running in, heads covered with cloths reminiciant of the sym- posium theme picture. They are a corporate society per- forming group. When invited to play for businesses, they write new music for the company for whom they are performing. An example was the song they had written for BMW, and per- formed at the concert, called Ergonomics. For the sym- posium, they did not write a song themselves, but got short phrases and 4 notes from the audience and create a song on intimacy. Symposium week ended with a performance by Uncle Bonsai, well known for its songs, Penis Envy and Boys Want Sex in the morn- ing. There was a large turn out of community members at the concert. The songs ranged from Doug goes Home, from the Doug Series.to anacapella rendition of the Star Spangled Banner (due to the unfortu- nate demise of a guitar string). s9 ■ ' A common cause Feminism: The theory of the po- litical, economic, and social equality of the sexes (accord- ing to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary). The C.C. defini- tion read: A vocal issue, calling for the recognition of women as equals in society. Women and men alike joined forces in organization, such as in the Feminist Collective, to express frustration and anger at the social structure which forced women into subordinate posi- tions socially, economically, and politically. One particular group of students, a Feminist Per- formance Class, expressed its anger in a controversial pres- entation. The production was given in the Worner Center on October 24, and the tapes of women expressing anger, films portraying the exploitation of women, skits displaying vio- lent actions toward women, and posters depicting statistics concerning women's roles in economic society spurred mixed reactions from the C.C. community. Some students reacted positively, their anger being directed toward the wrongs of society toward women; others were angered by the performance itself, be- lievingthatthe mannerinwhich the presentation was made was contrary to the class's goals; a final group reacted in sarcasm, declaring the following week Radical Feminist Awareness Week. The class, directed by Professor Joanne Kleine, also hosted Phyllis Jane Rose, the author of The Crystal Quilt: Feminist Political Theatre, who spoke on the planning process of feminist performances. The Feminist Collec- tive presented a less militant forum for women to express their frustrations with an op- pressive society. The Collec- tive sponsored weekly meet- ings, hosting speakers who addressed means of changing the views of society and en- couraging complete equality for women. A women's support group was also a product of the Feminist Collective. The administration also supported women's is- sues on campus, sponsoring such events as a symposium on campus safety. In addition to the lecture at the beginning of the year, the symposium served as an educational serv- ice and open forum for discus- sion of the Escort Service, light- ing on campus, and informa- tion about campus incidents which were not reported. Several campus officials were on hand to address the stu- dents' concerns, including Dean Laurel McLeod; Paul Jones, Assistant Director of Residential Life; Clane Cow- art, Director of the Physical Plant; and Lee Parks, Chief of Security. Many people were involved in the feminist issue, and it served as a common concern for many students to become actively involved on campus, whether through feminist performances, support groups, authoring letters and articles for the Catalyst, or simply discussing concerns and making more people aware of the goals of feminism. 150 U vc ?y - What happens to a dream deferred? He performed for a small crowd, but the group was so enthusiastic that they stood and danced from the first song ( Poppa was a Rolling Stone } to the finale, Were- wolves from London , with his band, El Rayo X. Oneofthelead singers opened her heart up to the crowd when she spoke of her concerns for the world and for its individuals with the bassist's accompaniment as the lead guitarist replaced a broken string. The crowd en- joyed the evening which began with C.C.'s own Dogtooth Vio- let. Perhaps one of the mostwell-known performersto entertain C.C. students and faculty was Arlo Guthrie, who performed at the The Fine Arts Center on November 13. The show sold out in four hours, and the crowd delighted in Guthrie's folksy monologue, not to mention his well thought- out hair. D The issue of Apart- heid in South Af- rica was emphasized in 1988 most heavily by CCCAA, who sponsored a number of events to increase campus awareness of Apartheid and C.C.'s policy on investments in companies doing business in South Africa. On Friday, November 1 1 , a number of C.C. students rallied outside the Worner Center and the annual Board of Trustees meeting. The stu- dents called for complete di- vestment. The board did ap- prove a policy for selective divestment: Procedures for Evaluating Companies doing Business in South Africa. The purpose of the policy was to evaluate the companies' busi- ness records and make indi- vidual decisions concerning divestment, dependent on the evaluations. CCCAA also spon- sored speakers, such as Pro- fessor Elizabeth Schmidt of Macalester College, who ad- dress issues such as Isolating South Africa: C.C. and Apart- heid, and Women Under Apartheid. The organization also presented the movie, C_ry_ Freedom in order to increase awareness of the issue in the campus community. A great many students participated in the blood drive, giving the gift of life to those in need during the often danger- ous holiday season. To thank those who donated blood, the fraternity brothers sponsored their re- cently-initiated tradition, the Beta Blood Bash, complete with live music, pizza and beer. The party-goers danced and raged at the fitting conclusion to the drive. - ™ T y(i mTfflii«niMii ™ %0 Vv r y s 3 c , ravo D | The Great Perform- h ances Series was sponsored by Great Perform- ers and Ideas. The organiza- tion's purpose was to expose students to a variety of classi- cal and modern performances. A number of performances were given, approximately one each block. The first visiting group was the Seattle Mime The- atre, a non-traditional mime performance group. They presented a number of skits, impromptu scenes, and sev- eral spoken stories. The finale was a presentation of 20th Century Vector Movements, in which they demonstrated remarkable skills showing the movements people make on stairs, escalators, and eleva- tors, as well as sliding one performer's head across the small screen behind which she appeared. Another performer was baritone soloist Hakan Hagegard. He, after giving the Thursday-at-Eleven in an in- formal setting, performed sev- eral numbers in Swedish and German, displaying the talent he earlier proved in Mozart's The Magic Flute. Allison Eldridge per- formed a solo cello recital near the end of second block. The C.C. campus was able to re- late well to Allison because she was only eighteen years old; a child prodigee who had performed with the cello from a very young age. Duo a Quattro Mani was the final performance first semester, featuring two pian- ists. Susan Grace and Alice Slavich presented a series of duets to end the semester of productions. Directors Jim Malcolm and Richard Seer were praised by the actors, who considered the play well-directed. The lead role of Jimmy Porter was played by Tom Cramer; His wife, Alison, was portrayed by Wendy Hodgson ; Celia Books played the role of Helena; Jay Marx was Cliff; and Christopher Schultz played the part of Colonel Redfern. The dramatic perform- ance, described as very Brit- ish, centered on Jimmy, the angry young man popular in mid-fifties' British theatre. Through his actions and rela- tionships, he addressesthe con- flicts between social classes and the communication be- tween women and men. The first weekend of November was the perform- ance time for Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing, a play which addresses the issues of fidelity and relationships. The student directorwas Caren Hartenstein, who was assisted by Rochelle Spector. The production, which intrigued the audience by open- ing with a play within a play, featured Rob Peck and Rachel Pollack in the lead roles of Henry and Annie; Jonathan Knight as Max, Karen Caplan as Charlotte, Gordon Scott as Brody, Kalle Matso as Billly; and Lorie Buckley as Debbie. According to one of the actors, the play emphasized the need to search forthe right person in their lives ... the real thing. ms f — ■ .. o ■™ sing yoi I'jcmal as (iic Roekics That lorn} our western view. jj Your loyal sons and daughters { Will always grateful be; The College dear to all our hearts C Coio fair. This statement, from Coach Dang Pibulvech, is indicative of the extremely high quality of CC's Division 1 soccer team. The women reached the NCAA quarterfinals. MaryClaire Robinson added, The level of play has increased, we have better players, we can relate better on the field... with all these factors meshing together we have a better work level than before. And at this level - playing national top 6 teams - we have to mesh together or, in even one breakdown, these teams can capitalize on that and score. The CC women fought valiantly into double overtime at the disappointing end of a great season, heads held high. ■i ■ . .-' r - Or. ., . Coach Horst Richardson was optimistic about his 23rd year coaching soccer, encouraging the men to win every game. One of the team's most outstanding players, Kristian Sundborn exemplified his team's competitive efforts in the battle against Division I New Mexico - a game in which the Tiger's returned to Colorado victorious, 3-1 being the final score. w ■ cF y w . x _ 163 -' Keep it Up! Optimism was the key word, as the Volleyball team began its season. The women were vying for their fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs. Coach Susan Bethanis stated that the team's ultimate goal was to improve the 1987 record and continue the winning reputation in the new season. Certainly the team was a successful contender nationally, ranked 7 through most of th season. r m Kr t Hi _ vL- , M $ oV'- - v . -. . . -a .y - mmmmmm We've Got Spirit! Two points to go ... a field goal would do it, if only ... The Millsaps lost the football, and CC had a chance again! But, at the last second, the field goal attempt fell short, and the game was lost, 17-15. The team did recover, however, and CC's 106th football season was not a complete loss, ending in a battle with Colorado School of Mines - the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi. And the fans were there ... W«4 °j _ ■ 167 Force Be With You It was a fight nearly to the finish, as CC's Erik Browning raced to the finish at the CC Invitational meet, a principal event at Homecoming. While Erik took second in the race, the team placed third overall at the tournament, typical of its high ranking throughout the season. Coach Ted Castaneda attributed the team's success to the transition from low-key, casual workouts to a more demanding daily routine. By the end of the season, the coach was certain that the cross country team had established itself as a force to be dealt with. _ The Women's team proved to be competitive as well. They placed among the top teams at several meets. For example, they ranked second in Saline, Kansas. Coach Joani Schofield led the efforts of this NCAA Division III team. She accredited much of the team's success to the high- altitude running the team did, a benefit at flat-lander meets. ■ ■ ™ Ring out the thousand wars of old. The C.C. team lost its first challenge to a team sponsored by a Colorado Springs department store, but in 1950 C.C. took the NCAA championship. 1987 was an eventful season, as well, with the Tigers defeating the University of Denver (the traditional hockey rival) in the opening round of the WCHA playoffs. The hockey team worked under the direction of a new coach, Brad Buetow, who transferred to C.C. from U.S. International. Although the Tigers lost to D.U. in the first two games, they set out to better prepare themselves for the February rematch. n 172 X So° °t V to °t 173 , ' We are all part of one another. -Barbara Deming )■ f Mi c? -■ Women's Basketball Women's basketball was a relatively new sport at C.C., having been organized in 1975. The team advanced itself to NCAA Division III status in 1983. Coach Beth Branson entered her fourth year of coaching the team with quite a task in front of her: The team had struggled through a mediocre season in 1987, but looked to the 1988 season with a sense of optimism. Some of the most formidable opponents met by the team included the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Claremont, Pomona, and the University of Chicago. 175 Vv •' HM % J SAV ■ ■ fSS! C.C. was one of the founders of the Rocky Mountain Conference in 1909, but became independent of the league in 1963. A Division III team, the Tigers were under the direction of a new head coach from Cornell University, Al Walker. Men's Swimming The swimming and diving teams at C.C. were directed by Jerry Lear (in his 26th year at C.C.) and Tom Weir (a newcomer to the C.C. staff). The captains of the team were Tom Hackett and Tom Smith, who led the veteran varsity squad in meets the Universities of Colorado and Denver, as well as the School of Mines. Coach Lear anticipated an outstanding class of [freshfolk to] supply additional depth for the team, and to break number of school records. Women's Swimming The Women's Swim team competed against a variety of Division II and Division III teams, including the Air Force Academy and the University of Northern Colorado. Coach Joani Schofield had competitive season in 1987, finishing with a 6-5 record, so she prompted the women on her team to improve upon the record in 1988. 179 - o - ' Alpine Skiing The Alpine Ski team, C.C.'s only co-ed athletic team, has competed for nearly twenty years against Colorado schools and other members of the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Ski Conference. Coach Randy Pratt emphasized that the team was goal-oriented, putting the group effort before individual performances, in an effort to improve the team's scores in competition. i I 0 M '«: - [The poverty rate] has begun to decline, but it is still going up. -Ronald Reagan Anybody can be wrong occasionally, but only true exceptional people can make an entire career of it. -Ashleigh Brilliant ™ — ■ Aamoth, Gordon McCannel; Jr. 1 90 Abe, Susan Teiko 1 Abel, Andrew Craig 3 103 Abell, Frederick Julian 4 Abernathy, Shawn Marie 1 92 Abeson, Judith Andrea 2 84, 124 Abing, Anne Dolores 4 Abrams, Wendy Paige 4 23, 24, 26, 28 Acito, Marc Evan 1 Acuff, Nathaniel James 2 99,112 Adamo, Jennifer Lynn 4 51 Adams, Marne Elizabeth 5 Adams, Vastie s Adkisson, William Robert 1 92 Agan, Brian K 2 Agee, Richard J. f Aguayo, Lucia 2 Aguayo, Marisa 4 132 Aguilera, Manuel s Ahern, Jon Steven 1 94 Akers, Lyn s Alberts, Eli Noah 2 110 Alexander, Catherine Locke 4 29, 59 Aley, Sarah Katherine 3 Alkaitis, Michael Baily 3 Allen, Amy 1 Allen, Pat s Allison, Christine Jean 2 80 Allison, Richard Christopher 3 Allison, Sarah Lynn 2 Alvarez, Guillermo Enrique 1 Amador, Elias 4 Ames, Gypsy s Ames, Jonathan deNeui 1 Anderson, Amanda Ellen 3 Anderson, Carol Rose 2 84 Anderson, Carolyn McPhee 3 Anderson, Christopher Harold 3 Anderson, Diana f Anderson, Edward Chantler 3 Anderson, Jennifer Bennett 1 Anderson, Jodi Lynne 2 105 Anderson, Jonathan Robert 3 Anderson, Karen Marie 1 Anderson, Karyn Lynn 1 91 Anderson, Krista Lynn 2 Anderson, Marlow f Anderson, Matthew Alan 2 110 Anderson, Matthew Daniel 2 110 Anderson, Stacy Lynne 1 93 Anderson, Susan Elizabeth 1 80 Anderson, Todd Christopher 3 Andresen, Christine Michelle 3 81, 124, 127, 124, 126 Andrews, Albert O'Bierne; III 3 Andrews, Ken f Andrews, Todd Matthew 1 Anklow, Jon Benjamin 4 108 Ansbacher, Henry L 1 87 Anselmi, Edwin Theodore 3 81 Anselmi, Jeanne 2 Anstey, Mary Therese 2 Antonucci, Michael James 8 Anzelc, Meredith Louise 2 Apodaca, Caryn Delphine 2 Aquavia, Katherine Ann 2 86 Aragon, Antonette Marie 3 Arbogast, Jessica Lynne 7 124 Arend, Christopher Austin 2 112 Armstrong, Anne Aileen 1 Armstrong, David R. s Armstrong, Jerrel Lee 4 Armstrong, Lindsay Patterson 2 Arnold, Elizabeth Cheri 2 11, 99 Arnott, Julie Suzanne 1 Arthur, Richard Charles; Jr. 4 Ash, Brian Patrick 4 104 Ashby, Terry Hamilton 3 Asher, Kinda Sue 3 81, 124 Ashley, Ellen Elizabeth 1 86 Ashley, Susan A. f Askey, Dale Steven 4 2, 111 Asteinza, Patricia Elena 1 91 Atkins, Happy Hornby 1 Auer, Anne 1 Auner, Joseph f Avantaggio, Andrea Mary 3 Ayers, Alexander J. 2 105 Ayers, William Craig 1 Aymond, Colin Conroy 1 Ayotte, Don s Ayres, Justin Bret 3 81 Baay, Dirk f Babb, Randy s Babbs, Jessica Mary 1 136 Babcock, Mark Richard 4 Babcock, Mary Evelyn 4 81 Bachelier.
