The women ' s team, led by Captain Julie Dunn won three invitational meets and placed well in several others. In their first year to compete in the NCAA the Tigers took sixth place in the Division III regional meet. T _ _ 100 YEARS OF FOOTBALL Colorado College defeated the Sigafus Hose Volunteer Fire Department on Thanksgiving Day, 1882 to begin a tradition of exciting Tiger football action that has continued for 100 years. In 1885 C.C. played in the first inter-collegiate football game west of the Mississippi. In 1909, Colorado College helped found the Rocky Mountain Conference and were champions or co-champions seven times during their 54 year association with the conference. Since 1957, the Tigers have been directed by Head Coach Jerry Carle. Over the past 26 years, longer than any other C.C. coach has served, he has compiled a record of 121-103-5. The next two games were lost, but the Tigers sharpened their claws for the Homecoming game against McMurray in which they competed six touchdown passes on the way to a 49-32 triumph. Still not satisfied, they went on to defeat Trinity a second time for their fifth and final win. The season ended with losses to tough Hamlin and Miner teams giving the Tigers a final 5-4 record. Several players made outstanding contributions to the 1982 Colorado College Football Team. Seniors Pat Geonetta an d Ray Bridges finished out their Tiger careers with excellent performances. Ray, a defensive end and co-captain was voted a member of the Kodak All-American Team for Division II and III teams. At halfback Geonetta continually amazed oppo- nents with his speed, taking 20th place in Division III with 12 touchdowns. Sophomore Quarterback Scott Driggers led the Tigers to 5th place in the Division in passing offense. Scott passed for an average of 125 yds per game. Punt returner and Pass Receiver Tom Southall also put in an exceptional performance this year. He finished his sophomore season with a punt return average of 21.6 yds and was featured in an article in the NCAA news. All in all a very successful centennial season. UPTOWN SPIRITS MENS BASKETBALL The mens basketball team managed only four wins against eighteen losses. Nevertheless, Coach Williams considered the year a success as the team showed much improvement as the season progressed. All of this years players should be returning next year so we should see an even more im- proved team in 1984. Wade, Craig Walker, Eric Kirchhof, Jamie Pytell, Tim Dohm, Jeff Genee, Hendrickus Bradbury, Tom Wells, Todd Quarles, Tony Floore, Thad Driggers, Scott Craig Wade Scott Driggers; do you suppose he ' s good at this? C. C. HOCKEY Mike Bertsch took over as head coach of the Tigers this year and he and his team found the going to be a bit rough. Not only was the team very young, but it was plagued by in- juries all season, particularly to the upperclassmen. The WCHA competition was severe as usual and the Tigers were able to scrape up only a few wins. The Tigers moved the puck well in many of their games but were unable to put everything together to score the necessary goals. Bertsch ' s skaters finished the regular season with a record of 6-26-1 and 2-24 in WCHA play. At the WCHA playoffs the Tigers got off to a good start against Wisconsin, taking the lead in total goals early in the second game. However the Badgers came back with five goals to put the Tigers away for good. Hope springs eternal . . . ? C. C. TIGGER! Doug Lidster MENS SWIMMING Coach Jerry Lear considered this year ' s team to be one of the best in his 20 years as coach. The 400 freestyle relay team especially strong, setting a new school and pool record to take 1st place at the ISL championship meet. At Nationals the Tigers swam well but no one was able to place in the top 12 to achieve All-American status. They didn ' t miss it by much, though, as the 400 free relay team took 16th as did Troy Tafoya in the 200 freestyle. Eric Tibbey finished 26th in the 100 freestyle. For his job in leading this great Tiger effort Jerry Lear was named ISL coach of the year. m i £ Todd Elwyn, Troy Tafoya, Coach Lear, Eric Tibbey, David Hartong BlGCkTS Eric Tibbey, Jerry Lear Top: Todd Elwyn, Troy Tafoya, Brad Ross, Mark Thorkalson, Jeff Faunce, Dave Hartong, Eric Tibbey, Coach Lear Bottom: Lloyd Pierce, Tony Johnson, Mike Ramsey, Phil Guzzeltavern, Marshall Griffith, Bruce Tracey Becky Price ; f mj ' WOMENS SWIMMING The 82-83 season was an excellent one for the women swimmers with both strong relay teams and fine individual efforts. The Tigers really came on strong at the end of the season improving their times impressively at the last few meets. Nine swimmers quali- fied to go to the NCAA Division III Nationals. At Nationals Laura Luckett placed ninth in 3m diving and Sue Wolfe took twelfth in 50yd backstroke. Both Laura and Sue were named All-Americans for their outstanding performances. Even though captain Bill Graebel fell in the giant slalom and was unable to compete in the other events, the men took 9th place overall. Dave Terry put in an outstanding performance, coming in 5th in giant slalom, and got himself voted a 1st team All-American. Scott Ree took 13th place in the slalom. The women ' s team narrowly missed qualifying for Nationals, but Millie Halek qualified as an independent and finished 26th in the giant slalom. Steven Paul, Scott Ree, Dave Terry, Andrew Schwartz, Richard Giorgi, Millie Halek, Bill Graebel WOMEN ' S BASKETBALL Under the direction of first-year coach Ruth Olson, the Tigers developed into a well-balanced team, showing steady improvement over the course of the year. It was quite an exciting season, with many games won or lost only in the final seconds. The women finished with a 14-11 record to take second place in the Continental Divide Conference. In the CDC championship game against UNC the Tigers made a valiant attempt to come from behind, but the Bears held them off 62-60, denying them the league title. The weather shortened season prevent- ed some of the women from reaching their full po- tential, but the Tigers put in strong performances at meets, especially toward the end of the season. High jumper Karen Knudson competed at the Di- vision III National meet, taking 15th place with a jump of 5 ' 3V2 Kathryn Pam BASEBALL It was a dissapointing year for the home nine. The Tiger baseball squad suffered 14 defeats while coming up with only two wins. The team did, however, show improvement toward the end of the season and played several close and exciting games in their final week. Unfortunately they were continually denied victory, of- ten by only a run or two. Better luck next year slug- gers. Barry Patterson With the exception of two dissapointing losses to Air Force the Lacrosse team had a successful season compiling a record of 8-5. The Tiger stickers led by co-captains Paul Lastayo and Brooks Gentleman dis- played a lot of talent and provided plenty of excitement for the fans. High scorer Terry Claasen was named the most valuable players. Despite the loss of several seniors, next year ' s team should be a strong one as many talented underclassmen will be returning. C.C. LACROSSE MENS ' TENNIS Under the tutelage of new coach Ken Bartz the men ' s tennis team compiled an excellent 12-4 record. The Tigers were nar- rowly defeated in both matches against Air Force but vanquished the tough Mines team twice. The team also per- formed well on a spring road trip to California. The raqueteers established themselves as one of the top teams in the state and one of the better Division III squads nationwide. The Tigers should be formidable again next year as four players will be re- turning. MENS TENNIS TEAM WOMENS ' TENNIS Led by sophomore Hyla Wolfe, the women ' s tennis team faced many tough opponents; most of them from Division I and II schools but managed to come up with a respectable 6-7 record for the up with a respectable 6-7 record for the year. tW+m+ri±f M Karen Ruehl Gay Shaddock Nina Dulacki DRAMA DANCE LIQUOR-BEER WINE _ n ffT?) This book incorporates the aspects of C.C. which we perceived to be the most important, namely the students, professors and other personnel here. We hope our approach is appealing and offer our apologies to those not included. We would like to thank the dedicated people who were instru- mental in putting this book together. Special thanks to Allison O ' Neal, Russ Johnson, Ed Calvin, Bob Bergquist, Sharon Yanagi, Mary Warner, Alan Manley, Ted Gates, Ann Duncan and Steve Brodbeck. We don ' t know where all the energy came from (might have been the Old Swills which were pounded so regularly around the office) but it was phenomenal. There are many other people who contributed in greater or lesser ways to whom we are also very grateful. It is thus with pleasure that we present this 82- 83 Colorado College Yearbook.
